. U.S. Indian leader. Tecumseh was a Shawnee leader who led a tribal confederacy that opposed the United States beginning in 1811, and continued in an alliance with British forces in the War of 1812. He was killed in the Battle of the Thames.

U.S. forces commanded by Major General William Henry Harrison decisively defeated British forces led by Major General Henry Procter in the Battle of the Thames near present-day Chatham, Ontario. The most significant casualty was the death of Shawnee Indian leader Tecumseh.

. U.S. musician. Mr. Roppolo was a clarinetist with the New Orleans Rhythm Kings in the 1920s. He also played violin, saxophone, and guitar. Mr. Roppolo spent most of his later years in a mental hospital after being committed because of increasingly erratic behaviour.

Soviet troops cleared German forces from the east bank of the Dnieper River along a 400-mile stretch from Dnepropetrovsk north to the confluence of the Dnieper and Sozh Rivers. Allied forces in Italy captured Aversa and Maddaloni north of Naples and crossed the Calore River. A U.S. Navy task force attacked Japanese-held Wake Island at dawn.

The U.S. Navy's Martin JRM Mars, the world's largest flying boat, successfully completed an endurance test in a flight of 32 hours 17 minutes.

Quarterback Geoff Crain scored the Blue Bombers' touchdown in the 4th quarter. Edmonton guard Frank Morris suffered a season-ending broken ankle.

Frankie Albert passed to Al Endriss for a touchdown in the 2nd quarter and Glen Christian converted and added a 32-yard field goal in the 3rd quarter as the Stampeders edged the Roughriders at Taylor Field in Regina. Bobby Marlow scored the only Saskatchewan touchdown in the 4th quarter.

Billy Martin singled to drive in Hank Bauer from second base with 1 out in the bottom of the 9th inning with the winning run as the Yankees became the first--and so far, only--team to win 5 straight World Series, beating the record they had shared with the Yankees of 1936-1939. The Yankees, playng before 62,370 fans at Yankee Stadium, seemed in control of the game. They led 3-1 after 8 innings, with Allie Reynolds relieving starting pitcher Whitey Ford after 7 innings. However, with 1 out in the top of the 9th, Duke Snider drew a base on balls and Carl Furillo hit a home run to tie the score. Mr. Bauer singled off Brooklyn relief pitcher Clem Labine to begin the bottom of the 9th. After Yogi Berra lined out to Mr. Furillo in right field, Mickey Mantle beat out an infield single, with Mr. Bauer stopping at second, and Mr. Martin singled to end the series. Carl Erskine started on the mound for the Dodgers and gave up 3 runs in 4 innings. Mr. Labine, the third Dodger pitcher of the day, pitched 2 1/3 innings in taking the loss. Mr. Reynolds was creditied with the win. It was the fifth World Series championship for Casey Stengel in his fifth season managing the Yankees, but it was the end of the line for Charlie Dressen as manager of the Dodgers. He was let go when owner Walter O'Malley refused to accede to his demand for a two-year contract, and was replaced by Walter Alston.

The Oakland Chiefs, who had been operated by a fan-owned corporation since 1950, declared a deficit of $30,000, and team president Paul Thomas said it was likely that the team would not operate in 1954.

Tommy Davis then hit a ground ball that bounced off the mound and then off the shins of New York second baseman Bobby Richardson into right field for a single to drive in the run.

Diplomacy
The United Nations General Assembly rejected the credentials of the South African delegation, but General Assembly President Leopoldo Benites of Ecuador ruled that the delegation could still speak before the assembly and otherwise participate in UN work. When South African Foreign minister Hilgard Muller took the rostrum shortly after the rejection, representatives of 100 of the 135 member nations walked out to express their disapproval of South African policies. South African Prime Minister John Vorster called the decision a "comedy," but said his country would remain in the UN.

Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, on a 10-day tour of China, and Chinese Premier Chou En-lai announced a trade agreement which placed emphasis on long-term commercial arrangements such as the recent deal to sell Canadian wheat to China for $1 billion. Mr. Trudeau also announced agreements on exchange of scientific, medical, and cultural delegations as well as establishment of consular relations.

The European Patent Convention was signed in Munich.

Lech Walesa, leader of Poland's Solidarity trade union movement, was named winner of the Nobel Peace Prize for 1983. The committee awarding the prize praised Mr. Walesa for his restraint and commitment to nonviolence in his protests against Poland's Communist regime.

A national plebiscite in Chile on whether President Augusto Pinochet should be allowed to continue in office for another 8 years resulted in a 55.99% "No" vote, resulting in General Pinochet continuing in power for another year, with an election to be held three months before the end of his term.

U.S. vice presidential candidates Dan Quayle (Republican) and Lloyd Bentsen (Democrat) met in a nationally-televised debate in Omaha, Nebraska. Mr. Quayle had been accused of being too young and inexperienced to be vice-president, but he said that he was as experienced as John F. Kennedy had been when he had been elected president in 1960. Senator Bentsen replied, "I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy."



Vadim Medvedev, newly-appointed Soviet cabinet minister for ideology and propaganda, gave a speech in which he rejected the idea of a struggle against the West. He said that Communism was facing crises around the world, and called for development of a new concept of socialism that would borrow ideas from other socialist countries and even from capitalist countries.

The Brazilian Constitution was ratified by the Constituent Assembly.

Health
The United States Energy Department admitted that 25 workers at recently-closed Savannah River Plant in South Carolina had been accidentally exposed to radiation at the nuclear power plant.

The United States Labor Department reported that the national unemployment rate had dropped slightly in September to 5.3%.

Israel responded to the previous day's Muslim suicide bombing in Haifa with an air attack on a facility 10 miles northwest of Damascus, claiming the site was a terrorist training camp used by the organizations Hamas and Islamic Jihad. Syria denied the allegation and asked the United Nations to condemn the attack, the first by Israel on Syria since the Yom Kippur War of 1973.

Terrorism
After 374 days in a Syrian jail, Maher Arar was released to his family in Ottawa. The 33-year-old Canadian citizen had been changing planes in New York in 2002 when he was detained by American officials and then deported to Syria on suspicion of being an al-Qaeda terrorist.

Politics and government
Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat declared a state of emergency and named a new cabinet, with Ahmed Qurei as the new Prime Minister.

Ricky Ray threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Ed Hervey early in the 1st quarter and handed off to Mike Pringle for a 1-yard TD run late in the 2nd quarter as the Eskimos took a 17-6 halftime lead and hung on to edge the Alouettes before a capacity crowd of 20,202 for their first win in Montreal in 6 years and their first win at Molson Stadium in 37 years. The only Montreal touchdown came on a 7-yard pass from Anthony Calvillo to Ben Cahoon, followed by a 1-yard rush by Deyonce Whitaker for a 2-point convert with 6:48 remaining in the game. Matt Kellett missed a 43-yard field goal attempt late in the game that would have tied the score, and the Eskimos conceded a safety touch with 16 seconds remaining.
