Ian Sunter kicked 4 field goals and a single as the Tiger-Cats defeated the Argonauts before 33,135 fans at CNE Stadium. Hamilton punter Alec Lockington punted for a single late in the 1st quarter, and the Tiger-Cats added a safety touch late in the 3rd quarter when Toronto punter Zenon Andrusyshyn was tackled in his own end zone. Toronto quarterback Joe Theismann scored the game's only touchdown on a 1-yard rush with 11:09 remaining in the game. The Hamilton defense limited the Toronto offense to 7 first downs and 113 yards net offense.
Walt McKee's 18-yard field goal with 47 seconds remaining in the game gave the Blue Bombers their win over the Roughriders at Winnipeg Stadium, keeping Winnipeg's playoff hopes alive. Mr. McKee kicked 3 field goals, a convert, and a single. Winnipeg fullback Jim Calip rushed 1 yard for his only CFL touchdown in the 1st quarter. George Reed rushed for both Saskatchewan touchdowns, and Jack Abendschan added 2 converts and a field goal.
Jim Evenson rushed for two 1-yard touchdowns and former Calgary quarterback Jerry Keeling, in his first game against his old team, threw a touchdown pass to Hugh Oldham as the Rough Riders routed the Stampeders at McMahon Stadium. Mr. Oldham's touchdown came on a 29-yard pass with 1:14 remaining in the 2nd quarter, and Gerry Organ's convert gave Ottawa a 25-1 halftime lead. Dick Wesolowski rushed 1 yard for the only Calgary touchdown in the 4th quarter, and Ottawa defensive back Rod Woodward scored the final touchdown on a 62-yard interception return with 3:06 left in the game. The first Ottawa touchdown came just after the Stampeders appeared to be on their way for a touchdown, but fumbled just outside the Ottawa goal line, and Ottawa defensive end Jim Piaskoski returned the fumble 87 yards. The loss was the fourth straight for the Stampeders--all against Eastern teams--and they had been outscored 114-18 in the last 3 of those games. It turned out to be the last game for Jim Duncan as Calgary's head coach; he was replaced the next day by assistant coach Jim Wood, while Mr. Duncan, who had led the team to the Grey Cup championship two years earlier, was reassigned to scouting duties.

New York Mets 10 @ Oakland Athletics 7 (12 innings) (Best-of-seven series tied 1-1)
The Mets scored 4 runs--the last 3 unearned--in the top of the 12th inning and held on for the victory before 49,151 fans at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum in a game that lasted 4 hours and 13 minutes, the most time-comsuming game in World Series history to date. With the score tied 6-6 after 11 innings, New York center fielder Willie Mays made the last hit of his 22-year major league career, singling in John Milner to give the Mets a 7-6 lead. Two errors by Oakland second baseman Mike Andrews, who had entered the game as a pinch hitter in the 8th inning, led to 3 unearned runs. The Athletics rallied in the bottom of the inning when Reggie Jackson led off with a triple, Gene Tenace drew a base on balls, and Jesus Alou singled home Mr. Jackson. Ray Fosse then hit into a force play at second base and Mr. Andrews walked, but pinch hitter Vic Davalillo popped out and shortstop Bert Campaneris grounded out to end the game. New York starting pitcher Jerry Koosman gave up 6 hits and 3 runs--all earned--in 2 1/3 innings. Tug McGraw, the Mets' fourth pitcher in the game, gave up 4 runs--all earned--in 6 innings of relief, but was the winning pitcher, with George Stone getting the save. Mr. McGraw also singled on a bunt and scored the Mets' second run in the 12th inning. Vida Blue started for Oakland, allowing 4 runs--all earned--in 5 1/3 innings. Rollie Fingers, the fifth of six Oakland pitchers, pitched 2 2/3 innings and was charged with the loss. The following day, Athletics' owner Charlie Finley coerced Mr. Andrews into signing a document stating that he had a shoulder injury necessitating his transfer to the disabled list. Baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn refused to allow the move and ordered Mr. Andrews to the Athletics' active roster. The incident turned Mr. Andrews into a folk hero, especially to anyone who'd ever been humiliated by his boss.

Baltimore Orioles 3 @ Philadelphia Phillies 2 (Baltimore led best-of-seven series 2-1)
The Orioles overcame a 2-0 deficit with a run in the 6th inning and 2 in the 7th before 65,792 fans at Veterans Stadium. Solo home runs by Gary Matthews in the 2nd inning and Joe Morgan in the 3rd off Baltimore starting pitcher Mike Flanagan gave the Phillies the lead. The Orioles got on the scoreboard with a solo home run by Dan Ford. They scored 2 runs inthe 7th when Rick Dempsey doubled with 2 out, advanced to third base on a wild pitch, and scored on a single by pinch hitter Benny Ayala, who advanced to second on a single by John Shelby. Mr. Ford then hit a ground ball to Philadelphia shortstop Ivan De Jesus, who made an error that allowed Mr. Ayala to score. Mr. Flanagan was relieved by veteran Jim Palmer, who pitched the 5th and 6th innings and was credited with the win. Sammy Stewart then followed with 2 scoreless innings, and Tippy Martinez retired the Phillies in order in the 9th to get the save. For Mr. Palmer, the win was his last in the major leagues. He had won a game in each of the World Series of 1966 and 1970, thus becoming the first pitcher to record a win in World Series competition in three decades. Mr. Carlton gave up just 5 hits and recorded 7 strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings, but he became the losing pitcher as a result of the unearned run. Philadelphia manager Paul Owens decided not to put veteran first baseman Pete Rose, who had batted 1 for 8 in the first 2 games, in the starting lineup, marking the first time in Mr. Rose's career that he had not started a post-season game. He came to bat as a pinch hitter to lead off the 9th inning and struck out against Mr. Martinez.

Mr. Castillo then drew a bases on balls and the Marlins erupted for 8 runs. The last 5 runs were unearned as the result of an error by Chicago shortstop Alex Gonzalez, who closed his glove too soon on a ground ball that could have produced a double play.
