Black Hawk, 71 (?). U.S. Indian leader. Black Hawk was a leader and warrior of the Sauk tribe in the midwestern United States. He fought on the side of the British during the War of 1812 and led a series of skirmishes against white U.S. authorities in 1832 that became known as the Black Hawk War.

Kintpuash, 36 (?) . U.S. Indian chief. Kintpuash, better known as Captain Jack, was chief of the Modoc tribe, who resisted the attempts of the United States Army to confine them to a reservation in Oregon. Captain Jack and comrades Black Jim, John Schonchin and Boston Charley were hanged at Fort Klamath, Oregon for the murders of U.S. Army General Edward Canby and Reverend Eleazar Thomas, a California clergyman. The two white men had been members of a U.S. federal commission who had gone to meet with the Modoc at Captain Jack's Stronghold, and had been shot to death on April 11, 1873.

Arnold Bax, 69. U.K. composer. Sir Arnold wrote seven symphonies, but is perhaps best known for his many tone poems. Although born and raised in England, he was greatly influenced in his romantic and impressionistic compositions by time spent in Ireland.
Red Crowder, 23. U.S. baseball pitcher. Joseph Dean Crowder played in the New York Yankees' organization (1949-1953), compiling a 36-24 record with an earned run average of 3.26 in 212 games. He was 10-4 with a 3.26 ERA in 38 games with the Birmingham Barons of the AA Southern Association in 1953. Mr. Crowder died in Wyandotte, Oklahoma.

Mac Speedie caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Glenn Dobbs, Herb Johnson returned a fumble 15 yards for a touchdown, and Bobby Marlow rushed for another TD as the Roughriders opened a 19-0 lead in the 1st quarter and hung on to beat the Eskimos before 13,500 fans at Taylor Field in Regina. Billy Vessels and Claude Arnold scored Edmonton touchdowns in the 3rd quarter.
George Klein scored 2 touchdowns as the Redmen routed OAC before 6,000 fans at Molson Stadium in Montreal. McGill's Enal Bosoki was awarded a touchdown when he intercepted a pass on his own 35-yard line and was tackled on the OAC 25-yard line by Roney McDonald, who had come onto the field from the sideline during the play to make the tackle.

10 days before a scheduled presidential election in Honduras, a violent military coup led by Colonel Oswaldo López Arellano overthrew the government of President Ramón Villeda Morales, beginning 19 years of military rule. Mr. Villeda, leader of the Liberal Party, had been appointed President for a six-year term by Congress in 1957, but had lost support within his party and been replaced by Modesto Rodas Alvarado as the Liberal presidential nominee in the election scheduled for October 13.

The first 3 batters of the game reached base, resulting in 2 runs, which is all the Dodgers needed as they defeated the Yankees before 66,455 fans at Yankee Stadium. Maury Wills led off with a single, and was picked off by New York starting pitcher Al Downing, but beat the throw to second base for a stolen base. Jim Gilliam followed with a single to right field; Mr. Wills stopped at third base, and Mr. Gilliam took second on the throw by Roger Maris. Willie Davis then doubled home Messrs. Wills and Gilliam. Former Yankee Bill Skowron hit a home run to lead off the 4th inning, and the Dodgers scored their final run in the 8th when Willie Davis doubled with 1 out and Tommy Davis followed him with his second triple of the game. With 1 out in the bottom of the 9th, Hecor Lopez doubled for the Yankees off Los Angeles starter Johnny Podres, and Ron Perranoski took the mound. He gave up a run-scoring single to Elston Howard, but retired the final 2 batters to get the save.

The United States Senate Select Committee on Campaign Activities, which was investigating the June 1972 break-in at the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee at the Watergate office complex in Washington, D.C. and the subsequent cover-up, heard testimony from Donald Segretti, who had worked on the campaign to re-relect President Richard Nixon in 1972. Mr. Segretti had been hired by Mr. Nixon's appointments secretary Dwight Chapin to play pranks on Democratic party politicians, but he testified that he had no reason to believe that Mr. Nixon had been informed about his work. Mr. Segretti gave a lengthy rundown of his activities, including an admission that he had sent out a fake letter on Senator Edmund Muskie's stationery accusing fellow Democratic Senators Hubert Humphrey and Henry Jackson of sexual misconduct.
Terrorism
U.S. President Richard Nixon appealed to Austrian Chancellor Bruno Kreisky to reconsider his decision of September 29 to cave in to the demands of armed Arab guerrillas to suspend group transit of Israeli-bound Soviet Jews through Austria and to close down the Schoenau Castle transit facility. The two guerrillas had seized three Soviet Jews and an Austrian customs official on September 28 in a raid on a train bound from Moscow to Vienna carrying 40 Jewish emigrants. Mr. Nixon said, "We simply cannot have governments--small or large--give in to international blackmail by terrorist groups."

Chuck Ealey passed to Tony Gabriel for a 16-yard touchdown with 9:06 remaining in the game and rushed 1 yard for the winning TD with 3:29 remaining as the Tiger-Cats came back from an 18-7 deficit to defeat the Blue Bombers at Winnipeg Stadium. Mr. Ealey also passed 15 yards to Dave Fleming in the 2nd quarter for the first Hamilton touchdown. Winnipeg quarterback Don Jonas completed touchdown passes of 17 yards to Bob LaRose in the 1st quarter and 16 yards in the 2nd quarter, and added 2 converts and a field goal. It was the final game for backup defensive lineman and centre John Bonk in a Hamilton uniform; several days later, he was traded to the Blue Bombers with defensive back Tim Beamer for defensive back Pete Ribbins and running back Stan Brown.

U.S. President Ronald Reagan announced that he was postponing indefinitely his scheduled November visit to the Philippines, Indonesia, and Thailand, while keeping visits to Japan and South Korea on his schedule. Mr. Reagan cited the expectation that the U.S. Congress would still be in session as reason for the postponement, but it was widely assumed that the real reason was concern for his safety in the currently volatile atmosphere in the Philippines in the aftermath of the August 21, 1983 assassination of political opposition leader Benigno Aquino.

The U.S. space shuttle Discovery landed at Edwards Air Force Base, California, concluding the four-day STS-26 mission, the first U.S. manned space mission since the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger on January 28, 1986.
Diplomacy
Libya and Chad, who had fought each other off and on for years until a cease-fire in September 1987, formally ended their state of war and resumed diplomatic relations. The two countries agreed to cooperate with the Organization for African Unity in determining sovereignty over the Aouzou strip in Chadian territory, which was currently occupied by Libya, and reportedly contained uranium. France retrained a 1,200-man force in southern Chad to shore up the regime.
Terrorism
Mithileshwar Singh, an Indian citizen with permanent alien-resident status in the United States and a professor at Beirut University, was freed by his captors in Beirut 19 months after being kidnapped, along with three American professors, by gunmen who had identified themselves as Islamic Jihad for the Liberation of Palestine. The terrorists had offered to release one hostage in return for U.S. support for the Palestinians. Mr. Singh said his three American colleagues were "OK." The U.S. administration of President Ronald Reagan denied that any deal had been made to free any hostages.
