Honorius I. Roman Catholic Pope, 625-638. Honorius I succeeded Boniface V. He sided with the monothelitists in saying that Jesus Christ had one energy and one will rather than both human and divine energies and wills, resulting in his anathematization 40 years after his death. Honorius I was succeeded on the papal throne by Severinus.

Johann Ludwig Krebs. German musician and composer. Mr. Krebs played various instruments, but specialized in the organ, studying with Johann Sebastian Bach. He wrote works for organ as well as chamber and choral works, but his Baroque compositions were unfashionable in his time. Mr. Krebs died on January 1, 1780 at the age of 66.

George Thorn, Jr. Australian politician. Mr. Thorn had a career in state politics in Queensland spanning more than 35 years, and was Premier of Queensland from June 1876-March 1877. He died of heart failure on January 15, 1905 at the age of 66.

Russ Jackson completed touchdown passes of 15 and 68 yards to Ernie White and 33 yards to Whit Tucker and rushed 5 yards for a touchdown of his own to lead the Rough Riders over the Eskimos before 15,682 fans at Lansdowne Park. Joe Hernandez scored the only Edmonton touchdown with 1:05 remaining in the game, but the Rough Riders quickly came back, and backup quarterback Bob O'Billovich rushed 8 yards for the final Ottawa TD with 1 second remaining. Edmonton quarterbacks Lynn Amedee (4) and Don Getty (1) combined to throw 5 interceptions, and the Eskimos also lost a fumble. The loss eliminated the Eskimos from playoff contention for the second straight season.
Neal Beaumont set a CFL record--that still stands--for the longest interception return, going 120 yards for a touchdown to open the scoring late in the 1st quarter, as the Lions beat the Roughriders before 30,079 fans at Empire Stadium in Vancouver on a rainy Saturday night. Mr. Beaumont's interception came on a pass from Saskatchewan quarterback Frank Tripucka. Mr. Beaumont also punted for 2 singles, while Peter Kempf converted Mr. Beaumont's TD and kicked a field goal to give the Lions a 12-0 lead in the 3rd quarter. Mr. Kempf then had a field goal attempt blocked, and Dick Cohee returned the ball 93 yards for the Roughriders' only points, setting a CFL record for the longest fumble return. Joe Kapp passed to Sonny Homer and handed off to Nub Beamer for B.C. touchdowns in the 4th quarter. The Lions outrushed the Roughriders 278 yards to 70. Mr. Kapp completed 7 of 12 passes for 116 yards and 2 interceptions, while Mr. Tripucka was 7 for 15 for 91 yards and 2 interceptions.

Scandal
Kakuei Tanaka, Prime Minister of Japan from 1972-1974, was convicted of bribery. The three-judge Tokyo District Court panel found that Mr. Tanaka had accepted $2.1 million to arrange purchase of Lockheed aircraft by a Japanese airline. Mr. Tanaka was fined a sum equivalent to that which he had accepted and was sentenced to four years in prison. His appeals were expected to take many more years, on top of the seven years that had passed since his indictment in 1976. Four of his co-defendants were also convicted. Mr. Tanaka remained one of the most powerful leaders within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party.
Diplomacy
Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, now heading a 12-member commission on Central America, met in El Salvador with Salvadoran President Alvaro Magana and said afterward that it was imperative that principles of democracy and human rights be "preserved and extended" in the country.
The Lebanese government formally invited leaders of the nation's warring factions to meet October 20 in the national reconciliation conference that had been agreed to as part of the September 26 cease-fire.

Mike Boddicker pitched a 6-hit complete game to get the victory, striking out 6, walking none, and driving in the Orioles' third run in the 5th inning with a sacrifice fly. Charlie Hudson started on the mound for Philadelphia and took the loss, giving up 3 runs--all earned--in 4 1/3 innings.

Steven Tynan, 22; Damian Eyre, 20. Australian police officers. Constables Tynan and Eyre were gunned down in an ambush while examining a vehicle which had been reported abandoned. Four men were charged wih the murders of the policemen, but were acquitted, while two other suspects were shot and killed by police in other incidents before they could be tried. The murders of the constables was though to be payback by criminal gangs for an unusually high number of criminal suspects being shot by police.

U.S.S.R. President Mikhail Gorbachev said that the nation's farmers should be freed from the state-run system of collective agriculture and that agriculture should follow the path of privately-leased farms. Such experiments were already being conducted.
