Patrice de MacMahon, Duke of Magenta, 85. 3rd President of France, 1873-1879. The Duke of Magenta was a Marshal of France in a military career spanning more than four decades. He served in Algeria and was Governor General of Algeria from 1864-1870, and was a member of the French Senate during the same period. As President, Count Magenta restrained anti-Catholic secular parties, while not supporting the restoration of the monarchy. He resigned after losing parliamentary support.

The United States Senate Select Committee on Campaign Activities that was investigating the June 1972 break-in at the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee at the Watergate office complex in Washington, D.C. and the subsequent cover-up lost its battle to secure tapes of secret White House conversations relevant to their investigation. U.S. District Court Judge John Sirica bypassed a decision on the merits of the case, ruling that the committe's request did not fall within the court's jurisdiction.

Rusty Staub batted 4 for 4 with a home run and 5 runs batted in as the Mets evened the series before 54,817 fans at Shea Stadium. Mr. Staub's home run came in the bottom of the 1st inning after Wayne Garrett and Felix Millan had singled, giving the Mets a 3-0 lead. Oakland starting pitcher Ken Holtzman then retired Cleon Jones, but walked John Milner and gave up a single to Jerry Grote, and was replaced on the mound by Blue Moon Odom. Winning pitcher Jon Matlack gave up 3 hits and a run in 8 innings, while Ray Sadecki relieved him in the 9th and gave up 2 hits but no runs in picking up the save. Mr. Holtzman gave up 4 hits and 3 runs--all earned--in just 1/3 inning. Mr. Odom pitched 2 2/3 and was followed on the mound by Darold Knowles, Horacio Pina, and Paul Lindblad. Oakland infielder Mike Andrews, publicly humiliated by team owner Charlie Finley after making 2 costly errors in the 12th inning of game 2, entered the game as a pinch hitter for Mr. Pina in the top of the 8th inning, and received a standing ovation from the New York fans when he came to bat. Mr. Andrews grounded out to Mets' third baseman Wayne Garrett, and it was the last appearance of Mr. Andrews' 8-year major league career. He received another ovation as he returned to the Oakland dugout.

Former alderman Laurence Decore defeated incumbent Cec Purves to become Mayor of Edmonton, taking 61.3% of the vote to 26.35% for Mr. Purves in the municipal election. Mr. Purves had been mayor since 1977. It was the first Edmonton civic election in which the ballots were tabulated by a machine, and the system broke down soon after the early results started trickling in, leaving broadcasters such as John Berry and Leo Leclerc on CFRN television to fill in time by talking about the same things over and over again.

U.S. President Ronald Reagan named retired Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel Robert McFarlane to succeed William Clark as national security adviser. Mr. McFarlane had served as Mr. Clark's deputy and special envoy to the Middle East. Mr. Clark had been named four days earlier to succeed the departed James Watt as Secretary of the Interior.

The Phillies scored 5 runs in the top of the 3rd inning--3 on a home run by right fielder Jim Eisenreich--to take a 5-0 lead against Toronto starting pitcher Dave Stewart, and held on to even the series before 52,062 fans at SkyDome. Joe Carter hit a 2-run homer off Philadelphia starter Terry Mulholland to get the Blue Jays on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 4th, and scored another run in the 6th to knock Mr. Mulholland out of the box. Philadelphia center fielder Lenny Dykstra homered off Tony Castillo to lead off the 7th, providing an insurance run. Mr. Mulholland gave up 7 hits and 3 runs--all earned--to get the win, and Mitch Williams pitched the final 1 2/3 innings to get the save. Mr. Stewart took the loss, allowing 6 hits and 5 runs--all earned--in 6 innings.

Mike Bradley returned the opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown to get the Eskimos off to a good start as they overcame a sloppy performance to defeat the Blue Bombers before 45,164 fans at Commonwealth Stadium to clinch first place in the West Division. Mr. Bradley became the first Canadian player with the Eskimos to return a kickoff for a touchdown since Jim Chambers in 1951. Edmonton quarterback Ricky Ray completed 21 of 36 passes for 391 yards and a touchdown to Troy Mills, and Mike Pringle rushed 15 times for 43 yards and 2 touchdowns. Sean Fleming added 4 converts, 4 field goals, and a single. Winnipeg quarterback Pat Barnes completed 17 of 38 passes for 259 yards and 2 touchdowns to Milt Stegall, and fullback Mike Sellers rushed 5 yards for a touchdown. Troy Westwood added a convert, 3 field goals, and a single to complete the Winnipeg scoring. Mr. Pringle led all receivers with 5 receptions for 100 yards; Mr. Stegall caught 4 for 96.
