Amanda Röntgen-Maier, 41. Swedish-born musician and composer. Mrs. Röntgen-Maier was a successful concert violinist who married pianist and composer Julius Röntgen, her violin teacher's son. The couple settled in Amsterdam, and she quit performing, but composed works for violin and piano. Mrs. Röntgen-Maier died after a long battle with tuberculosis.

The Detroit Tigers, behind the pitching of Schoolboy Rowe, defeated the New York Yankees 8-3 before 26,000 fans at Navin Field in Detroit to extend their lead over the Yankees in the American League to 1½ games. Lou Gehrig led the Yankees’ attack with 3 doubles and a single in 4 at bats.

The Cincinnati Reds defeated the New York Giants 8-4 before 17,881 fans at the Polo Grounds in New York in a game that featured a rhubarb over a ball hit near the left field foul line by Harry Craft of the Reds. Billy Jurges of the Giants and umpire George Magerkurth spat at each other, and both ended up being suspended for 10 days and fined $150.

Marie-Victorin Kirouac, 59. Canadian botanist. Brother Marie-Victorin, born Joseph-Louis-Conrad Kirouac in Kingsey Falls, Quebec, was a member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. He set up the Botanical Garden of Montreal, was director of the Montreal Botanical Institute, and held a chair of botany at the University of Montreal. Brother Marie-Victorin was killed in a car accident on the road between Saint-Hyacinthe and Sainte-Rosalie while returning from a botanical excursion to Black Lake, Quebec.

U.S. forces in France entered he outskirts of Lessay, western anchor of the German defense line in France. British troops overcame the last defenses of Arezzo, a key central Italian city in the German defense line. Soviet units outflanked Grodno and Kaunas, bastions guarding the way to East Prussia. A Japanese effort to smash through the American defense line at Aitape, New Guinea failed at the Driniumor River.

Berlin radio confirmed reports that Nazi ambassador Franz von Papen had left Istanbul; reports that the Turkish government planned to break diplomatic relations with the Axis were not confirmed.

Christine Chubbuck, 29. U.S. journalist. Miss Chubbuck, a reporter with WXLT-TV in Sarasota, Florida, hosted the morning program Suncoast Digest. She died 14 hours after shooting herself while doing her program live on the air.
World events
The Cypriot National Guard, led by 650 Greek officers, overthrew the government of President Archbishop Makarios in a violent coup. Former terrorists Nikos Sampson was named the new President, while Archbishop Makarios fled to Paphos, and then to Malta. The British government, one of the guarantors with Greece and Turkey of an independent Cyprus, urged Turkey and Greece to exercise restraint. Turkey announced that it would not accept "any fait accompli" in Cyprus and expressed concern for Cyprus's Turkish minority, about 18% of the population. Turkish Premier Bulent Ecevit charged that the coup constituted an intervention by Greece in Cyprus, while Greece termed the coup an internal affair of an independent state.
Terrorism
Armed convicts Frank Gorham and Otis Wilkerson, who had taken seven hostages in the basement cell block of the U.S. courthouse in Washington, D.C. on July 11, quietly surrendered to authorities after failing to obtain free passage out of the United States, and the day after all the hostages had escaped.
Crime
Elmer Wayne Henley, an 18-year-old high school dropout, was convicted by a jury in San Antonio of murdering six youths. Though accused of participating with Dean Corll in homosexual tortures and murders of at least 26 teenaged boys, he had named the six youths in a written confession following his arrest in August 1973.
