Don Schollander, 18, of the United States became the first swimmer to win four gold medals in an Olympic games when he won the men's 100-metre and 400-metre freestyles (the latter in a world record of 4 minutes 12.2 seconds) and anchored the 4x100-metre and 4x200-metre relays at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Mr. Schollander was also the first American to win four gold medals since Jesse Owens at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin.
Peter Snell of New Zealand won the gold medal in the men's 800-metre run, with Bill Crothers of Canada winning the silver medal.

A riot at Long Kesh Maze Prison in Northern Ireland resulted in the prison being set afire, with injuries to 130 prisoners.

Cornel Wilde, 77. Austro-Hungarian-born U.S. actor. Mr. Wilde, born Kornél Lajos Weisz in what is now Slovakia, moved with his family to New York in 1920. His movies included Leave Her to Heaven (1945); A Song to Remember (1945); Forever Amber (1947); Shockproof (1949); and The Big Combo (1955). Mr. Wilde died of leukemia three days after his 77th birthday.
Walter Farley, 74. U.S. author. Mr. Farley was known for his novel The Black Stallion (1941) and numerous sequels.

History was made in Alberta when Reform Party candidate Stan Waters won easily over Bill Code of the Liberals, Bert Brown of the Progressive Conservatives, and two independents to become the first person ever to be elected to the Canadian Senate. The election took place in conjunction with civic elections; Jan Reimer won the Edmonton mayoral election, easily defeating incumbent Terry Cavanagh and five other candidates.

Pierre Salinger, 79. U.S. journalist and politician. Mr. Salinger was press secretary for U.S. Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson from 1961-1964, when he resigned in order to run for the Democratic Party nomination for a seat in the United States Senate from California. He won a primary and was appointed to fill the vacancy created by the July 30, 1964 death of retiring Senator Clair Engle. Mr. Salinger served in the Senate from August 4-December 31, 1964. He returned to journalism after leaving office, and spent his later years in France.

Israeli troops withdrew from the Gaza Strip, ending a 17-day offensive to stop Palestinians from firing rockets into Israeli settlements. 109 Palestinians had been killed in the fighting.

Lance Berkman singled home the first run of the game and hit a home run to close the scoring as the Astros beat the Cardinals before 42,896 fans at Minute Maid Park. Jeff Kent followed Mr. Berkman's 1st-inning single with a 2-run home run, and Carlos Beltran homered to lead off the 8th for Houston. Roger Clemens pitched 7 innings to get the win over Jeff Suppan, who pitched 6 innings.
Hideki Matsui batted 5 for 6 with 2 doubles, 2 home runs, 5 runs, and 5 runs batted in as the Yankees set a major league record for runs in a post-season game in their rout of the Red Sox before 35,126 fans at Fenway Park. The game was tied 6-6 after 3 innings before New York scored 5 runs in the 4th inning and 2 in the 5th. Javier Vasquez, who relieved starting pitcher Kevin Brown to start the 3rd inning, allowed 7 hits and 4 runs--all earned--in 4 1/3 innings, but was credited with the win. Ramiro Mendoza, who pitched 1+ innings and allowed the go-ahead run in the 4th, was charged with the loss.
