Defense
The United States Congress passed compromise legislation which would continue military aid to Turkey until December 10. U.S. President Gerald, who had twice before vetoed similar legislation to cut off aid to Turkey, reluctantly agreed to accept the legislation, an appropriations bill with provisions dealing with aid to Turkey. Under the provisions, military aid to Turkey would be cut off after December 10, 1974 and resumed only when the president certified that Turkey was in compliance with U.S. foreign aid laws barring offensive use of American weapons and that "substantial progress' had been made toward a settlement of the dispute between Turkey and Greece over Cyprus. The president could also continue or restore aid if he found it would "further negotiations for a peaceful solution of the Cyprus conflict."

Baseball
World Series
Los Angeles Dodgers 2 @ Oakland Athletics 3 (Oakland won best-of-seven series 4-1)

Joe Rudi hit the first pitch of the 7th inning for a home run to break a 2-2 tie as the Athletics defeated the Dodgers before 49,347 fans at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum and became the third team in major league history (after the New York Yankees of 1936-1939 and 1949-1953) to win three straight World Series. The Dodgers, who had trailed 2-0, scored 2 runs in the top of the 6th inning and put 2 runners on base with 2 out in the 7th inning, but Blue Moon Odom relieved starting pitcher Vida Blue and retired Dave Lopes on a force out to end the threat. During the 7th inning stretch, debris was thrown on the field, leading to a lengthy delay. Mike Marshall, who had relieved starter Don Sutton on the mound for Los Angeles in the 6th inning, neglected to take any warmup pitches while waiting for play to resume, which came back to haunt him. In the top of the 8th, Bill Buckner led off with a single, and when Oakland center fielder Bill North let the ball get by him for an error, Mr. Buckner decided to try to reach third base. Right fielder Reggie Jackson threw to second baseman Dick Green, who relayed to third baseman Sal Bando, who tagged Mr. Buckner for the first out of the inning. The Dodgers never threatened again as Rollie Fingers pitched 2 innings to get his second straight save, while Mr. Odom, who faced just one batter, was credited with the win. It was the last major league game for Mr. Green, who batted 0 for 13 in the Series but exhibited such brilliant defense at second base that he was almost voted the Series' most valuable player. Mr. Fingers won the award.

Nippon Series
Lotte Orions 8 @ Chunichi Dragons 5 (Best-of-seven series tied 1-1)

The Dragons led 5-1 after 5 innings, but the Orions rallied for 2 runs in the 6th inning, 4 in the 8th, and 1 in the 9th to win the game before 24,798 fans at Nagoya Stadium.

Disasters
As the Oakland Athletics and San Francisco Giants were preparing to take the field for the third game of the World Series at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, the area, 75 miles north of the epicentre, was hit by an earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale. Over 60 were killed and 3,000 injured, but the carnage could have been much worse. In addition to the more than 50,000 at Candlestick Park, hundreds of thousands more were watching the World Series on television, reducing the number of people who normally would have been out in traffic at that hour.

Economics and finance
The United States Commerce Department reported that the U.S. merchandise trade deficit had risen to $10.77 billion in August. The gap, the largest in eight months, was attributed to the stronger U.S. dollar, which had made imports cheaper and exports more expensive.
