Wenceslaus III succeeded Andrew II as King of Hungary and Wenceslaus II as King of Poland and Bohemia. He renounced the Hungarian throne in 1305 and was murdered in Moravia on August 4, 1306 at the age of 16.

Thor Heyerdahl. Norwegian ethnographer and explorer. Mr. Heyerdahl was best known for sailing 5,000 miles across the Pacific Ocean in the hand-built raft Kon-Tiki in 1947 to demonstrate that ancient peoples could have travelled long distances. He made similar expeditions through the next three decades and died on April 18, 2002 at the age of 87.

U.S. troops in Germany gained southeast of Aachen with a thrust of about a mile through the forest of Hurtgen. Dutch Prime Minister Pieter Gerbrandy said in London that his country faced the greatest disaster by flood and famine it had ever known as a result of the prolongation of fighting there.

The Blue Bombers trailed the Roughriders 21-0 after 18 minutes, but took advantage of 4 turnovers to defeat the Roughriders at Winnipeg Stadium. Ron Lancaster passed 10 yards to Rhett Dawson for the gam'es first touchdown in the 1st quarter, and Saskatchewan defensive end Tim Roth followed with a 13-yard return of a blocked punt for the second TD. George Reed rushed 2 yards for a touchdown at 3:01 of the 2nd quarter to make it 21-0 Saskatchewan after Brian Berg's third convert, but the Blue Bombers came back with touchdowns on a 3-yard rush by Jim Washington and an 11-yard pass from Chuck Ealey to Bob LaRose in the 2nd quarter, and a 1-yard pass from Mr. Ealey to Tom Scott in the 3rd. Walt McKee missed all 3 converts, but punted 70 yards for a single to make the score 21-19. Saskatchewan punter Al Ford conceded a safety touch to tie the game, and Mr. McKee kicked an 18-yard field goal with 17 seconds left in the 3rd quarter to give the Blue Bombers the lead, which they held through a scoreless 4th quarter.
Monroe Eley rushed for 128 yards--including a 12-yard touchdown--and caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Don Moorhead as the Lions defeated the Stampeders at McMahon Stadium. Lou Harris added to the B.C. rushing total with 123 yards, going over 1,000 yards for the season. B.C. running back Johnny Musso, playing just his third game of the season, suffered a season-ending injury in what turned out to be his last CFL game. It was the last start for Peter Liske as Calgary quarterback, and he failed to lead the Stampeders to a touchdown.

Ken Holtzman pitched a 5-hit shutout, while Mr. McNally allowed 6 hits and 2 runs--1 earned--in 5 2/3 innings in the last game of his 13-year career with the Orioles.

Saskatchewan led 27-10 after 3 quarters, but Turner Gill, who had earlier thrown a touchdown pass to Dwaine Wilson, connected on scoring strikes to Terry Lymon and Harold Bailey. Mr. Bailey’s touchdown came with just 5 seconds remaining. Mr. Wilson caught 10 passes for 111 yards, and rushed 8 times for 40 yards to lead the Concordes.
Roy Dewalt threw 2 touchdown passes to Ron Robinson, the second coming with 1:35 remaining in the game, to bring the Lions back against the Argonauts before 49,358 fans at B.C. Place Stadium in Vancouver. Lui Passaglia’s convert tied the game. Hank Ilesic kicked 3 field goals and 3 singles for the Argonauts, as well as the convert on their only touchdown, scored by Terry Greer on a 30-yard pass from Joe Barnes. The tie left the Argonauts as the only visiting team yet to lose at B.C. Place Stadium. It was the Canadian Football League’s last tie before the introduction of overtime for regular season games in 1986.

Jeff Funtasz rushed 1 yard for his second touchdown of the game with 24 seconds remaining to provide the winning margin for the Golden Bears in front of 1,400 at Varsity Stadium in Edmonton. The play was set up by a questionable pass interference call on Manitoba’s Peter Lawrence on a third-down pass that was incomplete. Manitoba head coach Dennis Hrycaiko later said, "That call was horse----!" Alberta’s winning drive was aided by an "injury" delay when Mr. Denesiuk, unnoticed by the officials, grabbed one of his backfielders and threw him to the ground. Mr. Funtasz’s first touchdown came early in the fourth quarter. Scott Smith scored the other Alberta major on a 21-yard pass from quarterback Mark Denesiuk, who replaced starter Darren Brezden at the start of the second quarter. Bisons’ touchdowns were scored by Jerry Izydorczuk, Ron Talakoska, and Darren Anderson. Mr. Anderson’s score came on a 14-yard pass from quarterback Mike O’Donnell.
On a rainy day at Thunderbird Stadium in Vancouver, Andrew Murray caught 8 passes for 92 yards and 3 touchdowns for UBC in their win over the Huskies. Leo Groenewegen recovered a Saskatchewan fumble in the end zone for another touchdown, and Thunderbird quarterback Frank Cusati rushed 1 yard for another. Tom Dixon kicked 5 converts, a 46-yard field goal, and 3 singles to round out the British Columbia scoring. Rob Bresciani scored a Saskatchewan touchdown on a 57-yard pass from quarterback Doug Siemens, and then caught a pass for a 2-point convert.
