Scandal
U.S. District Court Judge Charles Richey issued a temporary restraining order barring the administration of U.S. President Gerald Ford from carrying out its agreement with former President Richard Nixon on his White House tapes and papers. Judge Richey ordered that all the materials be held at the White House and released only in response to subpoenas, and further said that Mr. Nixon would only gain access to the materials "for the sole purpose of preparing to testify in the Watergate criminal trial." In arguments before Judge Richey, Mr. Nixon's attorney Herbert Miller disclosed that the "death clause" providing for the destruction of the materials upon Mr. Nixon's death would not become effective for five years. Many of the tapes of White House conversations were believed to be relevant to the June 1972 break-in at the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee at the Watergate office complex in Washington, D.C. and the subsequent cover-up. Several of those alleged to be involved in planning the break-in were now facing trial.

François Truffaut, 52. French film director. Mr. Truffaut was one of the major figures of French New Wave cinema. His movies included Les Quatre Cents Coups (The 400 Blows) (1959); Tirez sur le pianiste (Shoot the Piano Player) (1960); Jules et Jim (Jules and Jim) (1962); Fahrenheit 451 (1966); La Mariée était en noir (The Bride Wore Black) (1968); and La Nuit américaine (Day for Night) (1973). Mr. Truffaut died of a brain tumour.
Politics and government
U.S. President Ronald Reagan and Democratic party challenger Walter Mondale met at Bartle Hall in downtown Kansas City, Missouri for the second and last of their nationally-televised campaign debates. The debate centred on foreign affairs, and Mr. Mondale argued that Mr. Reagan was not in command of facts that he had to know in order to provide strong leadership. He cited alleged mistakes that Mr. Reagan had made in discussing arms-control issues, and asked, "Who’s in charge?" Mr. Reagan vigorously defended his policies and argued that he had built up America’s strength while Mr. Mondale was advocating arms cuts that would weaken the nation. Mr. Reagan restated his support for the Strategic Defense Initiative. Mr. Mondale warned of the dangers of extending the rivalry with the U.S.S.R. into space, and disagreed with the President’s suggestion that the technology might be shared with the Soviet Union. Mr. Mondale advocated the reduction of missiles on each side as a way of enhancing national security. Mr. Reagan addressed the issue of whether he was too old to be President with the debate’s most memorable line: "I’m not going to exploit for political purposes my opponent’s youth and inexperience." Even Mr. Mondale couldn’t help smiling at that comment.
