World Series
Boston Braves 7 @ Philadelphia Athletics 1 (Boston led best-of-seven series 1-0)
Hank Gowdy batted 3 for 3 with a double, triple, 2 runs scored, and a run batted in as the "Miracle Braves," who had won the National League pennant by 10 1/2 games after being lin last place on July 4, shocked the defending World Series champion Athletics and 20,562 fans at Shibe Park. Dick Rudolph pitched a complete game for the victory, while Chief Bender, who had the reputation as the best "money" pitcher in baseball, gave up 8 hits and 6 runs--in 5 1/3 innings. For Mr. Bender, it was the final game of his 12-year career with the Athletics, and probably his only really poor performance in 10 games in 5 World Series.

St. Louis Cardinals 11 @ Detroit Tigers 0 (St. Louis won best-of-seven series 4-3)
In one of the nastiest games in World Series history, the Cardinals scored 7 runs in the 3rd inning and cruised over the Tigers at Navin Field. In the 6th inning, Joe Medwick of the Cardinals slid hard into Tigers’ third baseman Marv Owen, and the two almost came to blows. Mr. Medwick was unable to take his position in left field in the bottom of the inning because he was being pelted with fruit, bottles, and debris by Detroit fans. Commissioner K.M. Landis, who was at the game, suggested that Mr. Medwick be removed from the game for his own protection, and he was. Dizzy Dean pitched a 6-hitter for his second win of the series.
While the St. Louis Cardinals were winning the World Series, their Columbus farm team of the American Association defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs of the International League to win the Junior World Series.

At the time of their seizure of the embassy, the terrorists had claimed that they had planted bombs in the embassy and would blow it up unless the U.S. paid $1 million in ransom and 38 prisoners were released from Dominican jails. The release of the hostages came two days after Dominican President Joaquin Balaguer had offered the terrorists safe conduct out of the country in return for the hostages' release.

Hamilton quarterback Reggie Slack threw 2 touchdown passes to Earl Winfield and rushed for another TD himself, with the other Hamilton touchdown coming on a 12-yard return of a fumble by Edmonton quarterback Rickey Foggie.
