Billy Williams, 61
. U.S. singer. Mr. Williams was lead singer of the gospel group the Charioteers (1930-1950), with time out for service in the U.S. Army during World War II. He then formed the Billy Williams Quartet, achieving a dozen charted singles from 1951-1959. His most successful recording was I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter (1957), which reached #3 on the Billboard singles chart and sold over a million copies. Mr. Williams suffered from diabetes in later years, and died of a heart attack.

Society
The Fleischman commission on drug use in New York state schools found that 45% of high school students in New York City used “some psychoactive drug.” The study stated that most estimates were underestimates, including that which put drug use in lower grades at 20%. The study did not include “hard-core addicts who have dropped out or been expelled,” but covered users of marijuana and the so-called “soft drugs” to those on heroin and other hard drugs.

Larry Pleau scored the winning goal with less than 2 minutes remaining in the game as the Whalers won their opening game over the Blazers, who were also making their debut, before 11,692 fans at Boston Garden. Tom Williams, Dick Sarrazin, and John Cunniff also scored for New England against Philadelphia goalie Bernie Parent. Former Boston Bruins' fan favourite Derek Sanderson scored the Blazers' first goal and added an assist. Defensemen Ron Plumb and John Migneault also scored for Philadelphia against Whalers' goalie Al Smith.

Chris Bordeleau scored 4 goals to lead the Jets over the Raiders before 6,273 fans at Madison Square Garden in the opening game for both teams. Ab McDonald scored the Jets' first goal ever, and Duke Asmundson also scored for Winnipeg. Ron Ward and Bobby Sheehan accounted for all the Raiders' goals.

Reg Fleming scored to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead, but Ted Taylor and Frank Hughes scored late in the game to give the Aeros the win before 7,347 fans at Sam Houston Arena in the first game for both clubs.

After giving up a run in the bottom of the 1st inning at Tiger Stadium, Blue Moon Odom and Vida Blue combined to shut down the Tigers to win the Athletics’ first pennant since the franchise was based in Philadelphia in 1931. Reggie Jackson scored the tying run in the top of the 2nd inning, but tore his left hamstring in the collision at home plate with Detroit catcher Bill Freehan, and was out of action for the rest of the game and the World Series. 50,276 attended the game at Tiger Stadium.

. U.S. politician. Mr. Landon, an oil executive, was Governor of Kansas from 1933-1937. He was the Republican party nominee for President of the United States in 1936, but lost to incumbent Franklin D. Roosevelt in one of the most lopsided results in U.S. electoral history. Mr. Landon won only in Maine and Vermont, for a total of 8 electoral votes to 523 for Mr. Roosevelt, who was seeking his second term as President.

Walter Brattain, 85. U.S. physicist and inventor. Dr. Brattain, with John Bardeen and William Shockley, shared the Nobel Prize in Physics for 1956 for the invention of the transistor.

U.S. Vice-President George Bush announced in Houston that he was seeking the 1988 Republican party nomination for President of the United States.

Willard Reaves, who rushed 12 times for just 33 yards, caught 2 of Mr. Clements’ TD passes, with the others going to Jeff Boyd, James Murphy, and Perry Tuttle. Edmonton quarterback Matt Dunigan completed just 18 of 45 passes for 277 yards and 2 touchdowns to Stephen Jones, but also gave up 3 interceptions. Mr. Boyd caught 4 passes for 134 yards, and Mr. Tuttle 4 for 116. Brian Kelly led the Eskimos with 73 yards on 4 receptions, giving him a CFL career total of 10,858 yards, surpassing the record of 10,837 amassed by former teammate Tom Scott.

The Twins knocked Detroit starting pitcher Doyle Alexander out of the box with 4 runs in the 2nd inning. The Tigers cut the lead to 4-3 with 3 runs in the bottom of the 4th, but the Twins scored 1 in the 7th, 1 in the 8th, and 3 in the 9th to clinch their first AL pennant since 1965. Bert Blyleven pitched 6 innings to get the win before 47,448 fans at the last post-season game ever played at Tiger Stadium.

The Blue Bombers scored 6 touchdowns in the 1st half to build up a 42-18 lead and withstood a late Ottawa rally to edge the Rough Riders before 23,898 fans at Lansdowne Park. Winnipeg quarterback Danny McManus completed 13 of 24 passes for 406 yards and 4 touchdowns—to Gerald Alphin, Larry Thompson (who scored after recovering a teammate’s fumble), Warren Hudson, and Rob Crifo. Greg Battle returned a fumble 55 yards for a Winnipeg touchdown with 13 seconds left in the 1st half, and Donald Smith returned a punt 71 yards for a touchdown in the 3rd quarter after taking a lateral across the field from Matt Pearce on a punt return. Ottawa quarterback Tom Burgess completed 29 of 50 passes for 371 yards and 4 touchdowns—2 to James Ellingson, 1 each to Reggie Barnes and Stephen Jones. Mr. Barnes rushed 27 yards for a touchdown in the 3rd quarter, and Treamelle Taylor returned a punt 96 yards for a touchdown to begin the Rough Riders’ 22-point 4th quarter. The game ended with Mr. Ellingson scoring his second TD on a 5-yard pass from Mr. Burgess, followed by a pass from Mr. Burgess to Jock Climie for a 2-point convert.

Mr. Westwood converted and Bob Cameron punted for a single in the last minute before 29,503 fans at Winnipeg Stadium on a windy afternoon.
