Quarterbacks Joe Zuger and Frank Cosentino each threw a touchdown pass and Don Sutherin added 12 points as the Tiger-Cats defeated the Alouettes before 20,581 fans at Molson Stadium. Mr. Zuger completed a 7-yard touchdown pass to Dick Easterly in the 3rd quarter, while Mr. Cosentino connected with Garney Henley for a 63-yard score in the 4th quarter to provide the winning margin. Mr. Sutherin set a CFL single-game record with 7 field goal attempts; 3 were successful and 2 went for singles. He was 1 for 2 in convert attempts. Mr. Henley caught 4 passes for 100 yards and rushed for 84. Montreal's George Dixon caught touchdown passes of 48 and 67 yards from quarterback Sandy Stephens, and rushed for 62 yards to set an Eastern Football Conference record of 1,410 yards for a single season, 3 yards more than the total amassed by Dave Thelen of the Ottawa Rough Riders in 1960. In addition to his touchdown passes, Mr. Stephens kicked 2 field goals and 2 converts. Hamilton fullback C.R. Roberts, in his second game as a Tiger-Cat, rushed 4 times for 14 yards, but suffered a career-ending broken leg when he was bent backward while being tackled in the 2nd quarter.



Ray Purdin caught touchdown passes from Bob Ptacek of 65 and 67 yards, and rushed 72 yards for another touchdown to lead the Roughriders over the Stampeders before 17,780 fans at McMahon Stadium. Calgary quarterback Eagle Day threw touchdown passes to Larry Robinson of 9 and 85 yards.

2 missed convert attempts and a missed field goal attempt by George Grant were the difference as the Lions came up short against the Blue Bombers at Empire Stadium in Vancouver. Ernie Pitts scored 3 Winnipeg touchdowns, 2 on passes from quarterback Kenny Ploen and the other when he recovered a fumble by B.C. punt returner Neal Beaumont in the Lions' end zone. Mr. Ploen also threw touchdown passes to Leo Lewis and Ron Latourelle, each covering 66 yards. Gerry James converted all 5 Winnipeg touchdowns. Willie Fleming scored 2 B.C. touchdowns, one on a 57-yard rush. Joe Kapp threw touchdown passes of 5 yards to Sonny Homer and 27 yards to Tom Larscheid, and rushed 1 yard for the Lions' other touchdown. Mr. Kapp's TD came with 3:09 remaining in the game, and Mr. Larscheid was fortunate not to be penalized when he grabbed referee Paul Dojack while protesting Mr. Dojack's ruling that Mr. Grant's convert attempt had been wide.

Ed Potomski scored 2 touchdowns, with Brian Conacher and John Nash scoring 1 each, as the Mustangs beat the Varsity Blues before almost 10,000 fans at J.W. Little Memorial Stadium in London. The teams combined for 13 fumbles, 8 by Toronto.

Don Taylor and Willie Lambert scored touchdowns for the Redmen as they defeated the Golden Gaels at Richardson Stadium in Kingston. The only touchdown for Queen's came in the 2nd quarter on an 11-yard pass from Cal Connor to Bill Edwards. Late in the same quarter, McGill quarterback Tom Skypeck connected with Mr. Taylor for a 77-yard touchdown. Mr. Lambert scored on an 11-yard rush in the 4th quarter.

Ken Nielsen caught 5 passes for 104 yards and 3 touchdowns, rushed once for 14 yards, and completed a 43-yard touchdown pass to Garry Smith as the Golden Bears routed the Huskies at Varsity Stadium in Edmonton. Alberta amassed 583 yards of offense and 29 first downs.

The national assembly of El Salvador voted 45-0 in favour of an amnesty for left-wing guerrillas and members of right-wing death squads and military men linked to massacres. An exception was made for those who had murdered Roman Catholic Archbishop Oscar Romero in 1980. Those eligible for the amnesty would include the killers of four U.S. churchwomen in 1980 and those who killed four U.S. Marines and nine others in San Salvador in 1985.

Diplomacy
Costa Rican President Oscar Arias said that Nicaraguan intransigence on peace talks was threatening the Central American peace process.

Workers’ Party candidate Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was elected President of Brazil in a runoff election, defeating Jose Serra of the governing Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB). Mr. Lula had been a factory worker and was the first person to rise from the working class to the presidency.

Milt Stegall caught 6 passes for 130 yards and a touchdown as the Blue Bombers beat the Tiger-Cats before 18,839 fans at Ivor Wynne Stadium. Mr. Stegall’s touchdown, on a 15-yard pass from Khari Jones with 27 seconds remaining in the 3rd quarter, was his 23rd of the season, breaking the CFL record for a single season that had been set by Cory Philpot of the British Columbia Lions in 1995. The touchdown came 4 minutes and 14 seconds after Mr. Jones had connected with Arland Bruce for a 14-yard TD. Troy Westwood added 2 converts, 4 field goals, and 2 singles. The Tiger-Cats broke up the shutout when backup quarterback Pete Gonzalez completed a 65-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Grigg with 2:45 remaining in the game. Mr. Grigg caught 3 passes for 80 yards and teammate Darren Flutie 3 for 60 in what proved to be the last game for both players, among others.

Marcus Crandell completed a 26-yard touchdown pass to Kamau Peterson with 33 seconds remaining in regulation time, and Mark McLoughlin’s convert gave the Stampeders their win over the Lions before 31,698 fans at McMahon Stadium. The only other touchdown was scored by B.C. running back Sean Millington in the 3rd quarter on a 1-yard rush. Mr. McLoughlin kicked 3 field goals, while B.C.’s Matt Kellett kicked a convert and 2 field goals. The Lions also scored a safety touch.

NFL
Emmitt Smith of the Dallas Cowboys, with an 11-yard gain, reached 16,728 yards for his career, surpassing the record formerly held by Walter Payton of the Chicago Bears.

World Series
San Francisco Giants 1 @ Anaheim Angels 4 (Anaheim won best-of-seven series 4-3)

Garret Anderson drove in 3 runs with a bases-loaded double in the bottom of the 3rd inning to break a 1-1 tie before 44,598 fans at Edison International Field of Anaheim. John Lackey pitched 5 innnings and was credited with his first win of the series, while Livan Hernandez was pulled after allowing the first 5 batters of the 3rd inning to reach base, and was charged with his second loss of the series. The championship was the first for the Angels in their 42-year history.
