Theodore Roosevelt became the first U.S. President to personally intervene in a labour dispute when he met in Washington with miners and coalfield operators from the anthracite coalfields of Pennsylvania in an attempt to settle a strike by miners, which had begun on May 12.

The Chalmers Automobile Commission announced that Tris Speaker of the Boston Red Sox and Larry Doyle of the New York Giants had won the Chalmers Award as most valuable player in the American and National League, respectively.

Politics and government
Rebecca Felton, a Democrat, was selected by Georgia Governor Thomas Hardwick to fill out the term of Thomas Watson, who had died. Mr. Hardwick was seeking to appoint someone who would not contest the special election for the seat, and Congress wasn't expected to convene until after the election, so it wasn't expected that Mrs. Felton would be officially sworn in. Walter George won the election, but allowed Mrs. Felton to be sworn in as a Senator on November 21, for a term of one day, before Mr. George took office.

Baseball
On the last day of the season, Johnny Allen of the Cleveland Indians suffered his only loss of the season after 15 straight wins when the Indians lost 1-0 to the Detroit Tigers. Winning pitcher Jake Wade allowed just 1 hit--a 2-out single by Hal Trosky in the 7th inning. The only run scored in the first inning when Hank Greenberg singled home Pete Fox with a sharp ground ball that got by Cleveland third baseman Sammy Hale. Mr. Allen almost came to blows with Mr. Hale after the game.

The San Francisco Giants scored 4 runs in the top of the 9th inning to defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-4 at Dodger Stadium to win a best-of-three playoff 2 games to 1 to capture the National League pennant. It was the first pennant for the Giants since 1954 and the first since moving to San Francisco in 1958. Los Angeles shortstop Maury Wills hit 4 singles and stole his 103rd and 104th bases of the year, a major league record that stood until 1974. He also became the first major league player to play in 165 games in a single season. A Dodger Stadium crowd of 45,693 was in attendance, boosting the year's attendance to a major league record 2,755,184.

In a ceremony at the White House, U.S. President Richard Nixon and Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko signed and exchanged the final documents implementing the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) accords limiting the two powers’ land-based and submarine-borne nuclear missile forces.

Politics and government
Jens Otto Krag resigned as Prime Minister of Denmark for “personal reasons.” Mr. Krag had supported Danish entry into the European Economic Community, and his resignation came the day after Danes had voted overwhelmingly in support of his position in a referendum. The ruling Social Democratic party designated Anker Jorgensen, head of Denmark’s largest trade union, as Mr. Krag’s successor.

Moses Denson rushed for 2 touchdowns and Ike Brown 1 as the Alouettes beat the Eskimos before 11,776 fans at Molson Stadium. Sonny Wade connected with John Eason from 46 yards for the other Montreal touchdown. Sam Scarber rushed for the first Eskimo touchdown and Tom Wilkinson passed to Tyrone Walls for the second. Edmonton guard Chip Kell suffered a knee injury that ended a promising career. It was the Eskimos' first visit to Molson Stadium since 1966, their first loss there, and their last game at Molson Stadium until 1998.

Wayne Matherne intercepted a Don Jonas pass and returned it from his own 40-yard line to the Winnipeg 33, setting up Ted Gerela's 19-yard field goal with 31 seconds remaining in the game as the Lions upset the Blue Bombers at Empire Stadium in Vancouver. Jim Evenson scored 2 touchdowns for the Lions, and Jim Young scored the other. Mr. Jonas threw 2 touchdown passes to Bob LaRose and 1 to Jim Thorpe.

The Kansas City Royals fired manager Bob Lemon and replaced him with minor league manager Jack McKeon. The Royals had a record of 75-78, fourth in the American League West Division.

The Detroit Tigers beat the Boston Red Sox 3-1 to clinch the American League East Division pennant. Woodie Fryman, who had come to the Tigers in a mid-season trade with the Philadelphia Phillies, won the pitchers' duel over Luis Tiant.



Relief pitcher Terry Forster, sent to bat as a pinch hitter in the top of the 9th inning, singled in the go-ahead run and then stole second base as the Chicago White Sox edged the Minnesota Twins 5-4 at Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington.

The New York Mets swept a doubleheader from the Montreal Expos 5-2 and 4-3 in 12 innings at Jarry Park in Montreal. Tom Seaver picked up his 21st win the first game, while losing pitcher Steve Renko dropped to 1-10 despite striking out 7 consecutive batters.

Tom McCraw had 4 hits, including a home run, as the Cleveland Indians edged the Baltimore Orioles 6-5 in 10 innings in the first game of a doubleheader at Municipal Stadium in Cleveland. The Orioles won the second game 4-3 as winning pitcher Roric Harrison became the last American League pitcher to hit a home run before the introduction of the designated hitter in 1973.

Vivien Merchant, 53
. U.K. actress. Miss Merchant was married to Harold Pinter from 1956-1980, and appeared in many of his plays. She appeared in a number of television programs and several movies, and was nominated for an Academy Award for her supporting performance in Alfie (1966). Miss Merchant drank herself to death after the end of her marriage to Mr. Pinter.

Joe Adams threw 2 touchdown passes to Joey Walters and another to Dwight Edwards, and Mike Washington rushed 19 times for 105 yards and 2 touchdowns as the Roughriders routed the Stampeders before 28,245 fans at Taylor Field in Regina. Dave Ridgway added 5 converts and 6 field goals. Phil Kessel completed a 24-yard touchdown pass to Alton Alexis in the 3rd quarter and passed to Willie Armstead for a 2-point convert for the Stampeders. The game was telecast on NBC, but the network pulled the plug on the game before it was over because of the lopsided score.

Jim Fanning resigned as manager of the Montreal Expos after they ended the season with a 6-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Mr. Fanning had replaced the fired Dick Williams late in the 1981 season and had led them to the National League East Division pennant. He returned to the front office after compiling a record of 102-87.

Robin Yount hit 2 home runs and a triple to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 10-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, giving the Brewers the American League East Division pennant by a 1-game margin over the Orioles. Mr. Yount finished with a .331 batting average, one point less than Willie Wilson of the Kansas City Royals, who won the title while sitting out his team's last game.

The San Francisco Giants beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-3, clinching the National League West Division pennant for the Atlanta Braves, who lost 5-1 to the San Diego Padres. The Braves finished 1 game ahead of the Dodgers, 2 ahead of the Giants.



Joe Rudi hit a double and a home run to lead the Oakland Athletics to a 6-3 win over the Kansas City Royals at Royals Stadium. The home run came in Mr. Rudi's last major league plate appearance.

After 16 months of negotiations, representatives of the United States and Canada agreed to a free trade pact, eliminating tariffs and other barriers to trade by 2000. Tariffs would be eliminated in three stages, some immediately, some in five years, and the rest in ten years. Arbitration panels would handle unresolved disputes. The agreement was subject to approval of the U.S. Congress and Canadian Parliament.

Mr. Worman also threw a touchdown pass to Larry Willis. The only Saskatchewan touchdown came in the 4th quarter when Glen Suitor, the holder on placekicks, rushed 12 yards on a fake field goal attempt. Quarterback Jeff Bentrim then passed to Tony Dennis for a 2-poinit convert. The Roughriders generated just 8 first downs and 129 yards net offense. Jackie Parker, who had resigned on July 6 as head coach of the Edmonton Eskimos, made his only appearance as a colour commentator on the CBC telecast.

Alan Trammell's ground ball between the legs of shortstop Manny Lee with 1 out in the bottom of the 12th inning drove in pinch runner Jim Walewander with the winning run as the Detroit Tigers edged the Toronto Blue Jays 3-2 in 12 innings before 45,026 fans at Tiger Stadium to move the Tigers 1 game ahead of the Blue Jays in the race for the pennant in the American League East Division with 1 game remaining in the regular season. Mr. Trammell's grounder was scored a hit, although it looked like an obvious error.
