Don Siegel
. U.S. movie director. Mr. Siegel directed films such as Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) and The Killers (1964), but was best known for directing movies starring Clint Eastwood, including Coogan's Bluff (1968) and Dirty Harry (1971). He died of cancer on April 20, 1991 at the age of 78.

Ed Salem kicked 3 field goals, including one that broke an 18-18 tie in the 4th quarter, as the Alouettes earned their first win of the season before 10,000 fans at Delorimier Stadium, who carried Montreal quarterback Sam Etcheverry off the field on their shoulders after the game. Mr. Salem also converted touchdowns by Tommy Hanlon and Jim Ostendarp. Joe Shinn, Vince Scott, and Hal Waggoner scored touchdowns for the Tiger-Cats, who led 12-3 after the 1st quarter. Montreal's Virgil Wagner was stopped just short of the Hamilton goal line on an end run as the gun sounded to end the game.

Igor Sikorsky, 83
. Russian-born U.S. aviator. Mr. Sikorsky designed and flew the Russky Vityaz--the world's first multi-engine fixed-wing aircraft--in 1913, and Ilya Muromets--the world's first airliner--in 1914. After coming to the U.S.A. in 1919, he pioneered flying boats in the 1930s and designed and flew the Vought-Sikorsky VS-300--the first viable American helicopter--in 1939.

54.4% of eligible voters in Canada who cast ballots voted “No” in a referendum on the Charlottetown Accord that had been reached on August 28 between provincial premiers and the federal government of Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. The “No” side won in six provinces and one territory. The “Yes” side won by 0.2% in Ontario, as well as in Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and the Northwest Territories.

Terrorism
A theatre in Moscow where 800 people had been held hostage by Chechen terrorists for the previous three days was stormed by Russian troops. Most of the terrorists, including the leader, were killed, and only four taken alive. However, 120 hostages were also killed, all but two from the effects of gas—an aerosol version of a powerful painkiller called Fentanyl—that had been released by the troops.

Anthony Calvillo threw 3 touchdown passes to Jeremaine Copeland in the 1st half as the Alouettes took a 35-21 lead and held on to beat the Renegades before 26,411 fans at Frank Clair Stadium on a wet and windy Saturday. Thomas Haskins rushed 20 times for 96 yards and 2 more Montreal touchdowns, while Bruno Heppell of the Alouettes started the scoring when he returned a blocked punt 12 yards for a touchdown just 1:25 into the game. Ottawa safety Donnavan Carter tied a CFL single-game record with 2 blocked punts, the first of which was picked up by teammate Donald Ruiz and returned 2 yards for a touchdown less than 3 minutes after Mr. Heppell’s TD. Ottawa quarterback Dan Crowley completed 2 touchdown passes to Jimmy Oliver and another to Reggie Jones, and rushed for a touchdown of his own. Mr. Oliver caught 6 passes for 126 yards, while Mr. Haskins caught 5 for 108. Mr. Calvillo completed 18 of 33 passes for 299 yards; Mr. Crowley was 17 for 46 for 247 yards. The win was the 200th for Don Matthews as a CFL head coach.

San Francisco Giants 5 @ Anaheim Angels 6 (Best-of-seven series tied 3-3)

The Giants led 5-0 after 6½ innings before 44,506 fans at Edison International Field of Anaheim, but the Angels rallied for 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning and Troy Glaus drove in 3 more in the 8th with a bases-loaded double. Brendan Donnelly was the winning pitcher in relief, while San Francisco reliever Todd Worrell took the loss.
