Mickey Mantle's first career World Series home run in the 8th inning provided the winning margin for the Yankees. Yogi Berra also homered for New York. Duke Snider hit solo homers off winning pitcher Vic Raschi in the 6th and 8th innings for the Dodgers. Allie Reynolds relieved Mr. Raschi with 1 out in the 8th and preserved the win. Brooklyn starter Billy Loes took the loss before 30,037 fans at Ebbets Field. Mel Allen and Red Barber called the game on television for NBC, and this is believed to be the oldest extant recording of a World Series telecast.

Sean Fleming’s 14-yard field goal with 3 seconds remaining in regulation time gave the Eskimos their win over the Renegades before 20,576 shocked fans at Frank Clair Stadium. The Renegades had rallied from a 34-20 deficit after 3 quarters to tie the game: Lawrence Tynes kicked a 49-yard field goal, quarterback Dan Crowley rushed 1 yard for a touchdown and passed to Reggie Jones for a 2-point convert, and Mr. Tynes kicked an 11-yard field goal with 1:21 remaining to tie the game. The Ottawa defense forced the Eskimos to punt, but two plays after taking possession at their own 51-yard line with 33 seconds remaining, Mr. Crowley completed a pass to Jimmy Oliver, but the ball was fumbled, and Steve Charbonneau recovered for Edmonton on the Ottawa 35. John Avery then rushed 28 yards to set up the winning field goal. Mr. Avery finished with 155 yards on 20 carries and 2 touchdowns, while Eskimo quarterback Ricky Ray threw 2 touchdown passes to Jason Tucker and another to Chris Brazzell. Mr. Crowley completed 2 touchdown passes to running back Josh Ranek. It was the first CFL game for Edmonton receiver Durell Robinson, who caught 1 pass for 10 yards. Eskimo linebacker A.J. Gass, who had suffered a season-ending injury to his right knee in September 2001, suffered a similar season-ending injury to his left knee.

Winnipeg’s Milt Stegall caught 10 passes from Khari Jones for 194 yards and 4 touchdowns, but it was Troy Westwood’s 32-yard field goal in overtime that enabled the Blue Bombers to edge the Roughriders before 24,157 fans at Taylor Field in Regina. Saskatchewan had the ball first in overtime, but Paul McCallum was short on a 49-yard field goal attempt. Saskatchewan’s only touchdown in the first 3 quarters came on Omarr Morgan’s 55-yard return of a blocked field goal attempt on the last play of the 1st half. In the 4th quarter, quarterback Nealon Greene completed a 21-yard touchdown pass to Quincy Jackson and then connected with Derick Armstrong for a 35-yard touchdown with 15 seconds remaining; Mr. McCallum’s convert tied the score. Mr. Armstrong caught 8 passes for 148 yards. Mr. Stegall’s touchdowns gave him a total of 18 for the season.
