Gabby Hartnett, 72. U.S. baseball player and manager. Mr. Hartnett was a catcher with the Chicago Cubs from 1922-1940 and the New York Giants in 1941, batting .297 with 236 home runs and 1,179 runs batted in in 1,990 games. He played in World Series in 1929, 1932, 1935, and 1938, the last of which was also his first of three seasons as the Cubs’ manager. The Cubs were involved in a tight race with the Pittsburgh Pirates for the National League pennant in 1938, and the teams played a game at Wrigley Field in Chicago—then without lights—on September 28 that was about to be called because of darkness until Mr. Hartnett hit a home run—called the “homer in the gloamin’—that provided the winning margin and helped to win the pennant. Mr. Hartnett was named the NL’s Most Valuable Player in 1935, when he batted .344 with 13 home runs and 91 RBIs, and .292 in the World Series. Mr. Hartnett was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955. He died on his 72nd birthday.
