Louis Daguerre
. French photographer. Mr. Daguerre was a painter and developer of diorama theatre, but was best known as the inventor of the daguerreotype, the first publicly available process of photography. He invented the process in the late 1830s, and it was popular through the 1850s. Mr. Daguerre died of a heart attack on July 10, 1851 at the age of 63.

. French writer. Mr. Proust was a novelist, critic, and essayist. He was best known for his seven-volume novel À la recherche du temps perdu (In Search of Lost Time) (aka Remembrance of Things Past) (1913-1927). Mr. Proust died of pneumonia and a pulmonary abscess, after years of declining health.

Lionel Conacher scored a touchdown, field goal, and convert to lead the Argonauts over the Paddlers before 10,031 fans at Varsity Stadium. Mr. Dinsmore, the quarterback, scored the game's first touchdown, and Mr. Polson scored the last TD. Mr. Douglas scored Parkdale's only point on a punt single in the 2nd quarter.

Pep Leadley kicked 7 singles and a field goal as the Tricolor upset the Blue and White before 10,294 fans to win the Yates Cup for the first time in 18 years. The other Queen's points came on a safety touch inthe 4th quarter when Mr. Leadley was wide on a field goal attempt and Mr. Snyder of Toronto ran the ball out of his end zone and then back into the end zone, where he was tackled. Toronto scored the game's only touchdown in the 1st quarter when the Tricolor's Harry Batstone fumbled a punt, and Mr. Westman fell on the ball for an easy touchdown. Mr. Duncan converted to give Toronto a 6-4 lead.

Curly Dorman scored 2 touchdowns and Jack Fraser added another as the Elks came back from a 9-4 halftime deficit to defeat U of A on a snow-covered field at Varsity Stadium. Mr. McNeill scored the U of A touchdown in the 2nd quarter.

The Rough Riders limited the Tiger-Cats to 143 yards of net offense and just 5 yards rushing as they took a 19-0 lead and gave up a late touchdown before 21,873 fans at Lansdowne Park. Rhome Nixon made a spectacular catch of a Rick Cassata pass for a 2-yard touchdown 4:05 into the game. Gerry Organ converted to give Ottawa a 7-0 lead, and kicked a 10 yard field goal at 8:13 of the 2nd quarter to make the score 10-0 at halftime. Art Cantrelle rushed 4 yards for a touchdown on the last play of the 3rd quarter; Mr. Organ missed the convert, and the Rough Riders led 16-0. Mr. Organ kicked a 23-yard field goal at 7:37 of the 4th quarter to make it 19-0. With less than 2 minutes remaining, Mr. Cassata threw an ill-advised pass and John Williams intercepted and returned it to the Ottawa 49-yard line. Hamilton quarterback Chuck Ealey completed a pass to Garney Henley for a 37-yard gain and then connected with him on the next play for a 12-yard touchdown. Ian Sunter kicked the convert with 1:24 remaining. The Rough Riders amassed 436 yards of net offense and should have been ahead by much more heading into the second game eight days later in Hamilton. Hamilton running back Dave Buchanan, the Eastern Football Conference's rushing leader in 1972, carried 10 times for just 2 yards; backfield mate Dave Fleming carried once for 3 yards, and Mr. Ealey rushed 6 times for zero yards.

Fullback Ted Passmore rushed for touchdowns of 20, 12, and 13 yards, while quarterback Wayne Allison rushed for touchdowns of 43 and 17 yards as the Golden Hawks beat the Huskies before 5,000 fans. Mr. Allison also threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Larry Simpson, and defensive tackle Tom Balfe scored the final Waterloo Lutheran TD on a fumble recovery in the St. Mary’s end zone. Wally Parker kicked 6 converts and passed for a 1-point convert on the final touchdown. Ray Romano scored the first St. Mary’s touchdown when he intercepted a lateral from Mr. Allison and ran 16 yards late in the 1st quarter. Quarterback Bill Robinson completed a 9-yard pass to Mike Kirkpatrick for the Huskies’ other touchdown in the 4th quarter. Ken Clark added 2 converts and a field goal.

Larry Tibble threw 4 touchdown passes and Gerald Kunyk passed for 2 touchdowns and ran for another as the Golden Bears routed the Warriors before 2,000 fans. Henry Schubach caught a touchdown pass from each quarterback. Vance Curtis, Roy Beechey, and Bruce Buchynski also caught TD passes from Mr. Tibble, while Brian Fryer caught the other TD pass from Mr. Kunyk. Dalton Smarsh rushed for 120 yards, including an 18-yard run for the final touchdown. Jack Schwartzberg added 5 converts, and Gary Adam tackled Loyola quarterback Neil Greeley for a safety touch. Mike Lapensee kicked 2 field goals for the Warriors, who trailed only 14-8 until Mr. Kunyk connected with Mr. Fryer for a 48-yard touchdown at 6:53 of the 3rd quarter.

William P. McGivern, 63
. U.S. author. Mr. McGivern wrote more than 20 novels, mainly mysteries and crime thrillers, some of which were adapted into movies such as The Big Heat (1953); Rogue Cop (1954); and Odds Against Tomorrow (1959). Mr. McGivern wrote many scripts for television programs in the 1960s and 1970s.

Dick Stello, 53
. U.S. baseball umpire. Mr. Stello worked in the National League from 1968-1987, umpiring 2,764 major league games. He worked in 2 All-Star games, five NL Championship Series, and the 1975 and 1981 World Series. Mr. Stello was married to the stripper Chesty Morgan from 1974-1979; the reader may make up his own jokes about chest protectors. Mr. Stello was killed instantly when he was standing between two parked cars and one of them was struck from behind by another car, crushing him.

A meeting of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops in Washington, D.C. resulted in a substantial majority who indicated support for the draft of a pastoral letter declaring the first use of nuclear weapons immoral, condemning the targeting of cities, and calling for a freeze on the production and deployment of weapons by the U.S.A. and U.S.S.R. The bishops scheduled final action on the letter for May 1983.

. U.S. actor. Mr. Coburn was popular in the 1960s and 1970s, appearing in such movies as The Magnificent Seven (1960); The Great Escape (1963); Dead Heat on a Merry-Go-Round (1966); Our Man Flint (1966); In Like Flint (1967); and The President's Analyst (1967). He won an Academy Award for his supporting performance in Affliction (1998).
