CFL
Eastern Semi-Final
Ottawa 30 @ Hamilton 20

Western Semi-Final
Calgary 3 @ Winnipeg 24

Skip Walker rushed 30 times for 253 yards—a CFL record for a playoff game—and a 13-yard touchdown as the Rough Riders came back from a 17-0 2nd-quarter deficit to upset the Tiger-Cats before 20,087 fans at Ivor Wynne Stadium. The Tiger-Cats had several chances to bury the Rough Riders in the 1st half, but managed just a 10-yard touchdown pass from Tom Clements to Keith Baker and 3 field goals, a single, and a convert by Bernie Ruoff. Gerry Organ got the Rough Riders on the scoreboard with 43 seconds remaining in the 1st half with the first of his 3 field goals. Kevin Starkey, who had relieved ineffective rookie Chris Isaac at quarterback for Ottawa, completed a 9-yard touchdown pass to Jim Reid early in the 3rd quarter and rushed 5 yards for a touchdown early in the 4th quarter. Mr. Ruoff kicked his 3rd field goal to reduce the Ottawa lead to 23-20 with 9:02 remaining in regulation time, but Mr. Walker scored with 4:21 remaining to put the game away. The previous playoff record of 204 yards rushing had been set by George Reed of the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 1967. The Tiger-Cats were limited to just 200 yards in net offense; Mr. Clements completed 15 of 27 passes for just 169 yards. It was the first CFL game for two Ottawa players, Neil Evans and
Chris Marcus.

Dieter Brock completed touchdown passes of 5 yards to Dan Huclack and 12 yards to James Murphy, and Trevor Kennerd added 3 field goals, 2 converts, and a single as the Blue Bombers defeated the Stampeders before 20,894 fans at Winnipeg Stadium. All but the final 3 points were scored in the 2nd quarter, when a strong wind favoured the Blue Bombers. The Stampeders had moved the ball deep into Winnipeg territory as the 1st quarter ended, but had to settle for a 17-yard field goal by J.T. Hay on the first play of the 2nd quarter. The Blue Bombers then struck for 21 straight points to lead 21-3 at halftime, and coasted the rest of the way. The Stampeders had a first down on the Winnipeg 3-yard line late in the 3rd quarter, but the Blue Bombers’ defense made a great stand, stopping running back James Sykes on the 1-yard line on third down. Mr. Kennerd finished the scoring with a 23-yard field goal with the wind with 1:44 remaining in the game. Mr. Murphy, who had been on the Blue Bombers’ injured and reserve lists all season but hadn’t yet played a game, caught 4 passes for 51 yards in the first game of a 9-year Canadian Football Hall of Fame career, all with Winnipeg. It was the only CFL game for Calgary linebacker Dan Skutack, who had been activated to replace Larry Barker, who had suffered a season-ending knee injury. The Winnipeg fans were apparently so upset at their team’s second-place finish after being in first place for almost the entire season that they left 12,000 seats unsold.
