. U.S. political worker and sports executive. A trucking, real estate, and hotel magnate from Minneapolis, Mr. Short was a close friend of U.S. Senator Hubert Humphrey and was treasurer of the Democratic National Committee. Mr. Short ran for the United States House of Representatives in Minnesota in 1978 as a Democrat, but lost. He bought the Minneapolis Lakers of the National Basketball Association in the late 1950s and moved the team to Los Angeles in 1960, but is best remembered as the owner of the Washington Senators and Texas Rangers of baseball's American League from 1968-1974, serving as general manager from 1968-1972. He charged the highest ticket prices in major league baseball, and made a disastrous trade with the Detroit Tigers after the 1970 season that gutted the team's infield. Attendance plummeted, and Mr. Short obtained AL approval to move the team to Arlington, Texas after the 1971 season, where the team became known as the Texas Rangers. Mr. Short sold the Rangers to Brad Corbett in 1974.

One of the most memorable plays in American football history took place when four members of the University of California Golden Bears combined for five laterals on a kickoff return to produce a touchdown on the last play as the Golden bears defeated the Stanford Cardinal 25-20. Stanford had taken a 20-19 lead on a field goal with 4 seconds to play, prompting the kickoff. Kevin Moen, who fielded the ball to begin the 55-yard return, took the last lateral for the touchdown, running past several members of the Stanford marching band on his way to the end zone.
