Baseball
The New York Yankees traded pitcher Randy Stein and cash to the California Angels for outfielder-first baseman Dave Kingman. Mr. Stein was 7-2 with an earned run average of 3.82 and 11 saves in 45 games with the Syracuse Chiefs of the AAA International League in 1977. Mr. Kingman had already played with three major league teams in 1977, batting .209 with 9 home runs and 28 runs batted in in 58 games with the New York Mets; .238 with 11 homers and 39 RBIs in 56 games with the San Diego Padres; and .194 with 2 homers and 4 RBIs in 10 games with the Angels.

The Toronto Blue Jays scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning to take a 4-0 lead over the Baltimore Orioles before 14,015 fans at Exhibition Stadium in Toronto. After the Orioles were retired in order in the top of the 5th, they refused to take the field in the bottom of the 5th, with manager Earl Weaver arguing that the tarpaulin covering the mound in the Blue Jays' bullpen was a safety hazard for left fielder Andres Mora. The game was then forfeited to Toronto; it was the only major league forfeit I can remember that wasn't the result of fan misbehaviour. Jim Clancy allowed 2 hits in 5 innings to improve his 1977 record to 4-6, winning the pitchers' duel over Ross Grimsley, who allowed 5 hits and 4 earned runs to fall to 13-9.

Denny Doyle's 3-run triple climaxed a 6-run 6th inning as the Boston Red Sox beat the New York Yankees 7-3 before 55,218 fans at Yankee Stadium, moving to within 2½ games of the Yankees and tied for second place with the Orioles in the American League East Division pennant race.

Pete LaCock singled home Willie Wilson with 1 out in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Kansas City Royals a 7-6 win over the Oakland Athletics in the first game of a doubleheader before 15,182 fans at Royals Stadium. Al Cowens led off the bottom of the 10th with a home run to give the Royals a 5-4 win in the second game to complete the sweep. Doug Bair was the losing pitcher in both games.

Stan Papi singled home Jerry White with 2 out in the bottom of the 9th inning to give the Montreal Expos a 5-4 win over the Chicago Cubs before 7,369 fans at Olympic Stadium in Montreal.

Tom Seaver pitched a 6-hitter to improve his 1977 record to 18-6, winning the pitchers' duel over Doug Rau, as the Cincinnati Reds edged the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2 before 52,224 fans at Dodger Stadium.

Dale Murphy led off the top of the 10th inning with his second home run of the game--and the second of his major league career--to break a 7-7 tie as the Atlanta Braves overcame a 7-1 deficit to defeat the San Diego Padres 8-7 before 3,740 fans at San Diego Stadium. The Padres led 7-1 after 7 innings, but the Braves scored 5 in the 8th, aided by 4 San Diego errors--3 in the first 3 batters--to reduce the deficit to 7-6, and tied the game in the 9th. Steve Hargan, the second of five Atlanta pitchers, pitched the 7th inning, allowing 1 hit and 1 run--earned--with 2 bases on balls and no strikeouts in the 361st and last game of his 12-year major league career. Oddly, the last batter he faced, sacrifice flied into a double play.

The Soviets took a 3-0 lead 8 minutes into the game, but Rick Tocchet and Brian Propp scored to make it 3-2 before a late goal gave the Soviets a 4-2 lead after the 1st period. Larry Murphy, Brent Sutter, and Dale Hawerchuk scored in the 2nd period to give Canada a 5-4 led, but the Soviets tied it in the 3rd before Mr. Lemieux scored the winner.

Baseball

The teams combined for 9 home runs, 7 by the Reds. Cincinnati catcher Terry McGriff hit his first major league homer, a grand slam as part of an 8-run 4th inning. San Francisco pitcher John Burkett and catcher Kirt Manwaring both made their major league debuts at the same time, entering as the battery to begin the 6th inning. Mr. Burkett allowed 3 hits and 3 runs--all earned, on 2 home runs--in 2 innings, striking out 2 batters and walking none, while striking out at bat. Mr. Manwaring batted 0 for 2 and made 3 putouts. Atlee Hammaker started on the mound and pitched 5 scoreless innings, allowing 4 hits, to get the win, evening his 1987 record at 10-10.

Lloyd Moseby batted 3 for 4 with a 3-run home run and a triple, driving in 4 runs to help the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-2 before 27,192 fans at Exhibition Stadium in Toronto. Mike Flanagan allowed 5 hits in pitching 8 scoreless innings against his former team to get the win, improving his 1987 record to 5-6.
