Born on this date
Hiranuma Kiichirō. Prime Minister of Japan, 1939. Mr. Kiichirō, an independent, was chief of the Supreme Court in 1921, Minister of Justice from 1923-1924, and Prime Minister from January 5-August 30, 1939. He supported an anti-Soviet foreign policy, but feared a war against the Allies. Mr. Kiichirō's government resigned after the Nazi-Soviet Pact; Mr. Kiichirō served as Home Secretary in 1940-1941, and defended state Shintoism. He was an unofficial adviser to Emperor Hirohito during World War II, and was sentenced to life in prison for war crimes. Mr. Kiichirō died on August 22, 1952 at the age of 84, shortly after being paroled.

The two-act revue-vaudeville-burlesque show Wine, Women and Song opened at the Ambassador Theatre on Bradway in New York, with a cast that included Herbie Faye and Pinky Lee. It ran for 150 performances through December 3, 1942, when it was banned by Judge Owen Bohan after a jury found the performance to be indecent.

German forces attacked Russian shipping on the Volga River, inflicting many casualties. U.S. Army, Navy, and Marine fliers claimed to have shot down 42 Japanese planes and to have damaged two cruisers, a seaplane tender, and a large transport during the past four days of fighting in the Solomon Islands. In two days of air assaults, U.S. Army bombers reportedly sank a Japanese transport and submarine at Kiska and Attu in the Aleutians, while Royal Canadian Air Force planes made their first attacks on Japanese forces on Kiska Island.

U.S. Senator George Norris (Independent--Nebraska) accepted the nomination to run for re-election after 16,000 Nebraskans signed petitions urging him to run.

The Brooklyn Americans suspended operations for the duration of World War II, reducing the NHL to a six-team league. The team had entered the National Hockey League in 1925 as the New York Americans after the Hamilton Tigers were expelled, and picked up most of the Tigers' players. They played as the Brooklyn Americans in the 1941-42 season, finishing 7th and last with a record of 16-29-3. The franchise wasn't formally cancelled by the league until 1946.

Wally Parks, 94. U.S. auto racing executive and journalist. Mr. Parks founded the National Hot Rod Association in 1951, and was largely responsible for promoting drag racing as a legitimate sport. He also co-founded the magazines Hot Rod and Motor Trend. Mr. Parks was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1992 and the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 1993.
Evelyn Knight, 89. U.S. singer. Mrs. Knight was popular from the mid-1940s through the early 1950s. Her singles A Little Bird Told Me and Powder Your Face with Sunshine (Smile! Smile! Smile!) both reached #1 on the Billboard chart in 1948. Mrs. Knight dropped out of show business in her late 30s.
