Louis Auchincloss
. U.S. author. Mr. Auchincloss wrote more than 60 books, many of them novels about "old money" families in New York and New England. His novels included The House of Five Talents (1960); Portrait in Brownstone (1962); and East Side Story (2004). Mr. Auchincloss died of complications from a stroke on January 26, 2010 at the age of 92.

Charlie Jaeger, 67
. U.S. baseball pitcher. Mr. Jaeger played with the Detroit Tigers in 1904, compiling a record of 3-3 with an earned run average of 2.57 in 13 games. He played at least 8 seasons in the minor leagues from 1904-1914, compiling a record of 56-64.

Douglas Albert Munro, 22. Canadian-born U.S. sailor. Signalman First Class Munro, a native of Vancouver, British Columbia who moved with his family to Vancouver, Washington as a toddler, was fatally wounded, two weeks before his 23rd birthday, while evacuating men during the September Matanikau action on Guadalcanal. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, and remains the only member of the United States Coast Guard to receive the award.

Kirk Gibson hit a home run in the top of the 9th inning off Tom Henke to tie the game 2-2 and then drove in Jim Walewander with a bloop single off Jeff Musselman in the top of the 13th inning as the Detroit Tigers avoided a series sweep and edged the Toronto Blue Jays 3-2 before 46,346 fans at Exhibition Stadium in Toronto to stay with 2 1/2 games of the American League East Division leaders. The Blue Jays had a 96-60 record after the loss, while the Tigers were 93-62. Alexix Infante made his major league debut with the Blue Jays as a pinch runner for Ernie Whitt with 2 out in the bottom of the 13th, but was erased on a force play to end the game.

The San Francisco Giants clinched a tie for the National League West Division pennant with a 15-6 win over the Atlanta Braves before 26,019 fans at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. 48-year-old Phil Niekro, who had pitched with the Braves from 1964-1983 before moving on to the New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians, and most recently, the Toronto Blue Jays, started on the mound for Atlanta in a farewell appearance. He pitched 3 scoreless innings as the Braves built a 5-0 lead, but faced 5 batters in the 4th, all of whom scored. Mr. Niekro left with no decision in the 866th and last game of his 24-year major league career. Candy Maldonado, who entered the game immediately after the departure of Mr. Niekro, hit a grand slam off relief pitcher Chuck Cary (0-1) and drove in 6 runs for the Giants, while Juan Uribe made 4 hits and scored 4 runs.

Nolan Ryan, who struck out 19 batters in a 9-inning game on August 12, 1974, started on the mound for Texas and struck out 5 in 7 innings. Neither starting pitcher got the decision. David Hulse led off the bottom of the 9th inning with a single, advanced to third base as a result of 2 errors, and scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Rafael Palmeiro.

Gary Carter doubled home Larry Walker with 2 out in the bottom of the 7th inning for the only run as the Montreal Expos edged the Chicago Cubs 1-0 before 41,802 fans at Olympic Stadium in Montreal. Tim Laker then ran for Mr. Carter, who was playing the 2,296th and last game of his 18-year major league career.
