Died on this date
Giles Corey, 81. English-born N.E. accused warlock. Mr. Corey was arrested on April 18, 1692 in Salem, Massachusetts, and accused of being a warlock. He refused to plead guilty or not guilty, and was arraigned at the September sitting of the court. According to the law then in force, a person who refused to plead could not be tried. Mr. Corey was then subjected to "pressing," i.e., having a board placed on his chest, with boulders piled on top. Mr. Corey still refused to plead, and died after three days of pressing, with his last words being, "More weight!" It remains the only time in American history that an accused person was put to death in such a manner.

Anarchist Alexander Berkman was sentenced to 22 years in prison for the attempted assassination of coke magnate Henry Clay Frick at Mr. Frick's office in downtown Pittsburgh on July 23, 1892.

Baseball
Boston Beaneaters' pitcher Kid Nichols helped his own cause by hitting a grand slam in the top of the 5th inning and a bases-loaded triple in the top of the 6th as the Beaneaters took a 14-0 lead over the Baltimore Orioles. He had to leave the game in the bottom of the 6th when he was hit by a batted ball, and the Orioles made a comeback but still lost 14-11 at Union Park in Baltimore.

Hank Greenberg became the first player ever to hit a home run into the center field stands at Yankee Stadium as he helped the Detroit Tigers beat the Yankees 8-1 before 17,420 fans. Winning pitcher Eldon Auker pitched a 5-hitter and batted in 3 runs to improve his 1937 record to 15-8; Bump Hadley allowed 13 hits and 7 runs--all earned--in 7 2/3 innings to take the loss, falling to 11-6.

Chubby Dean and George Caster were the respective winning pitchers as the Philadelphia Athletics swept a doubleheader from the Cleveland Indians 8-4 and 5-3 at Shibe Park in Philadelphia. Mr. Dean allowed 5 hits and 4 earned runs in 6 innings, but was credited with his first major league win; Cleveland starter Bob Feller allowed 12 hits and 7 runs--all earned--in 6 innings to take the loss, dropping to 6-7 for the season.

The Washington Nationals scored 3 runs in the 7th inning and another in the bottom of the 9th to defeat the Chicago White Sox 5-4 in the first game of a doubleheader at Griffith Stadium in Washington. Washington shortstop Frank Trechock batted 2 for 4 and made 2 putouts, 4 assists, and 2 errors, participating in 2 double plays in his only major league game. Dixie Walker batted 3 for 4 with a double, 3 runs, and 2 runs batted in as the White Sox won 9-1 in the second game, which was called after 8 innings because of darkness. Vern Kennedy pitched a 5-hit complete game victory to improve his 1937 record to 13-11, winning the pitching matchup over Red Anderson, who allowed 6 hits and 7 runs--all earned--in 3 2/3 innings, walking 4 batters and striking out 1 to take the loss in his first major league game. Mike Guerra made his major league debut behind the plate for the Nationals, batting 0 for 3 and making 3 putouts and an error. Washington second baseman Jerry Lynn batted 2 for 3 with a double, and made 4 putouts and 3 assists, participating in 3 double plays in his only major league game.

The Boston Bees scored 3 runs in the top of the 8th inning and held on to defeat the Cincinnati Reds 7-6 in the first game of a doubleheader before 7,561 fans at Crosley Field in Cincinnati. Cincinnati center fielder Harry Craft batted 3 for 6 with a triple and 2 runs, with 3 putouts and an assist in his first major league game, but grounded into a double play to end the game after the Reds had scored a run in the bottom of the 9th and had Kiki Cuyler on second base with 1 out. In the second game, Mr. Cuyler drew a base on balls with 1 out in the bottom of the 8th, and Ival Goodman followed with a 2-run home run to break a scoreless tie as the Reds won 2-0. Gene Schott pitched a 3-hitter to win the pitchers' duel over Jim Turner, who pitched a 9-hit complete game. Mr. Schott improved to 4-10 for the season, while Mr. Turner fell to 18-10.

Wally Berger hit a 2-run home run in the top of the 9th inning to tie the game 3-3, and the New York Giants scored a run in the 10th to break the tie and defeat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 before 21,855 fans at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis.

Frank Demaree singled with 1 out in the bottom of the 4th inning and Gabby Hartnett followed with a 2-run home run to provide all the necessary scoring as the Chicago Cubs defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers 2-1 before 18,324 fans at Wrigley Field in Chicago. The Dodgers almost tied the game in the 9th when Jim Bucher led off with a bunt single, advanced to third base on a 1-out double by Babe Phelps, and scored on a ground out by Cookie Lavagetto. George Cisar, who had gone in to run for Mr. Phelps, advanced to third on the ground out, but ended the game when he was thrown out trying to steal home plate. Mr. Phelps batted 4 for 4 with 2 doubles. Curt Davis pitched a 7-hitter to improve his 1937 record to 8-4, winning the pitchers' duel over Max Butcher, who allowed just 4 hits and 2 earned runs in 7 innings to fall to 10-14.

U.K. troops captured the city of Brickaville on the east coast of Madagascar. In his dispatch to The New York Times, Hanson Baldwin reported that U.S. Marines held a six- or seven-mile stretch of beach on Guadalacanal.

Died on this date
Paddy Livingston, 97. U.S. baseball player. Mr. Livingston was a catcher with the Cleveland Blues (1901); Cincinnati Reds (1906); Philadelphia Athletics (1909-1911); Cleveland Naps (1912); and St. Louis Cardinals (1917), batting .209 with no home runs and 45 runs batted in in 206 games. He was with the Athletics when they won the World Series in 1910 and 1911. Mr. Livingston played at least 8 seasons in the minor leagues, including 4 years (1907-1908, 1913-1914) with the Indianapolis Indians of the AA American Association. Perhaps the highlight of his career was when he was named to a team of American League all-stars who played an exhibition game against the Naps in Cleveland on July 24, 1911 to benefit the widow of Cleveland pitcher Addie Joss, who had died three months earlier. Mr. Livingston entered the game as a substitute and batted 1 for 2 as the all-stars won 5-3. He was the oldest living former major leaguer at the time of his death, and the last surviving player from the American League's first season as a major league in 1901, although he played just 1 game with the Blues.

Space
The U.S.S.R. launched the satellite Kosmos 954 from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Tyuratam, Kazakhstan. It re-entered the atmosphere four months later and crashed over the Northwest Territories, spreading radioactive debris from its power cell.

Matt Dunigan, who hadn’t played a down at quarterback since August 7, relieved starter Damon Allen to begin the 2nd half, and passed for 2 touchdowns while rushing for another to lead the Eskimos to victory over the Roughriders before 31,862 fans at Commonwealth Stadium. Mr. Allen completed an 8-yard touchdown pass to Marco Cyncar early in the 1st quarter after James Zachery blocked a Saskatchewan punt, but the Eskimos led just 10-6 at halftime. Mr. Dunigan rushed 8 yards for a touchdown just 1:20 into the 3rd quarter, and threw touchdown passes of 38 yards to Brian Kelly later in the 3rd quarter and 10 yards to Rick House in the 4th quarter. Don Narcisse, one of two Saskatchewan receivers playing his first CFL game, scored the Roughriders’ only touchdown on a 9-yard pass from starting quarterback Jeff Bentrim in the 3rd quarter. Mr. Kelly led all receivers with 158 yards on 7 receptions; Ray McDonald, the other Saskatchewan receiver making his CFL debut, led the Roughriders with 70 yards on 3 catches. Mr. Bentrim, who completed just 16 of 37 passes for 208 yards, led all rushers with 65 yards on just 3 carries. Saskatchewan defensive end Lynn Madsen also played his first CFL game, while it was the last game for his linemate Nick Hebeler. The 9-year veteran defensive tackle suffered a shoulder separation and never played again.

Fourth-year running back Jeff Funtasz rushed 19 times for 119 yards but suffered a career-ending knee injury late in the game as the Golden Bears hung on to defeat the Huskies before 772 fans at Varsity Stadium in Edmonton. Mr. Funtasz, the top rookie player in Canada in 1984, had torn ligaments in his left knee in 1986, and tore ligaments in his right knee on the final Alberta drive in this game. Teammate Mark Brus added 91 yards on the ground. The only Alberta touchdown came early in the 3rd quarter on a 27-yard pass from Darren Brezden to Steve Camp. The Huskies scored their touchdown early in the 4th quarter on a 35-yard pass from Greg Galan to Dan Farthing.
