William H. Seward, 71. U.S. politician. Mr. Seward began his political career as a member of the Anti-Masonic Party, but was a Whig from 1834-1855. He was Governor of New York (1839-1842) and represented New York in the U.S. Senate (1849-1861), and was a Republican when he served in the cabinet of Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson (1861-1869) as Secretary of State, narrowly surviving an assassination attempt on April 14, 1865, the same night President Lincoln was assassinated. Mr. Seward was known for his opposition to slavery and for his work on behalf of the Union during the American Civil War. He negotiated the purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867, which was referred to at the time as "Seward's folly." Mr. Seward died after several months of declining health.

Jim Germany rushed for 2 touchdowns and Warren Moon completed a 17-yard TD pass to Tom Scott as the Eskimos routed the Lions before 59,979 fans at Commonwealth Stadium on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. It was the largest crowd to attend a sporting event in western Canada to that date. Larry Highbaugh intercepted a John Fourcade pass in the 4th quarter for his 60th career CFL interception, breaking the record formerly held by Garney Henley. The game marked the end of NBC's experiment of televising Canadian Football League games to the United States during the NFL players' strike. Unfortunately for NBC, all four of the games they showed turned out to be routs. This game was announced by Charlie Jones and Mike Haffner. Mr. Haffner had been a receiver and had played with the Eskimos in pre-season games in 1966 before being released.
