Jean-Joseph de Mondonville, 60. French musician and composer. Mr. Mondonville was a classical violinist who was associated with the Chapelle royale and chamber, performing 100 concerts. He wrote grands motets, light operas, oratorios, and works for violin.

Born on this date
Marina Tsvetaeva. Russian poetess. Miss Tsvetaeva is regarded as one of Russia's greatest lyric poets. Her husband Sergei Efron joined the White Army in the Russian Civil War, and she and their two daughters suffered economic hardships, and the youngest daughter died of hunger. Miss Tsvetaeva and her family fled Russia for Paris in 1922, eventually settling there from 1925-1939. Mr. Efron and their daughter Alya developed Soviet sympathies, and Sergei became an NKVD agent. They were arrested for espionage in 1941; Mr. Efron was executed by shooting, aand Alya Efron served eight years in prison. Miss Tsvetaeva, reportedly under pressure to work for the NKVD, committed suicide by hanging herself on August 31, 1941 at the age of 58.

Allen Arless, 26. Canadian football player. A veteran of the Great War, Mr. Arless was a backup quarterback with the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association Winged Wheelers. In the first game of the season against the Toronto Argonauts, Mr. Arless entered the game when starter Frank McGill was ejected. On his first play, Mr. Arless handed the ball off and was heavily blocked, suffering a broken neck in the pileup of players. He died in hospital the following day.

Effie Ellsler, 87. U.S. actress. Miss Ellsler was a leading actress on stage, and later, screen in a career spanning more than 75 years, beginning at the age of 3. Her stage roles included the title role in Hazel Kirke in the early 1880s and the lead role in her last Broadway play, The Bat (1920-1922). Miss Ellsler appeared in more than 20 movies, including Old Ironsides (1926); The Front Page (1931); and Camille (1936). She died three weeks after her 87th birthday, after a short illness.

Louis T. Wright, 61. U.S. physician. Dr. Wright served with the U.S. Army Medical Corps in World War I, and later became the first Negro on the surgical staff of an integrated hospital in New York City, serving at Harlem Hospital. He was influential in instituting reforms in professionalism and standards, and in other areas such as antibiotic treatment, cancer research, chemotherapy, treating head injuries, and treating bone fractures. Dr. Wright advocated for Negro civil rights, but suffered lingering health problems, including tuberculosis, as a result of his war service.

Leonard Owen, 49. Australian speedboat driver. Mr. Owen was attempting to set a speed record on Glenmaggie Reservoir, 100 miles from Melbourne, when his boat, Hurricane III, hit its own wash at 150 miles per hour, rose 30 feet in the air, corkscrewed and broke into pieces, plunging back into the water. Mr. Owen was still conscious when he was pulled out, but died in hospital an hour later. The record for seven-litre class hydroplanes was 151 mph, and Mr. Owen seemed to be in good shape to break it; he was timed at 170 mph over the first leg of the course, and turned and re-entered the course at 150 mph.

Moe Racine's 40-yard field goal on the last play of the game gave the Rough Riders their win over the Alouettes before a Molson Stadium crowd of 19,288. Ernie White led the Ottawa attack with 11 carries for 89 yards and a touchdown, and 5 pass receptions for 114 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Russ Jackson threw the touchdown pass to Mr. White and another to Len Chandler, giving the Rough Riders a 23-10 lead in the 4th quarter. George Dixon rushed 46 yards for a Montreal touchdown in the 1st quarter, and Bobby Thompson returned the kickoff after Mr. Chandler's score 106 yards for a touchdown of his own. Bobby-Jack Oliver converted to make the score 23-17, and the Alouettes tied the game on a 41-yard touchdown pass from Sandy Stephens to Marv Luster. Mr. Oliver's convert was blocked, and he missed a 22-yard field goal attempt shortly after, but it went for a single point to give Montreal a 24-23 lead with 3 minutes remaining.
Bob Ptacek completed a 73-yard touchdown pass to Jack Gotta, rushed for a touchdown of his own, and handed off to Ferd Burket for another TD as the Roughriders beat the Eskimos before 12,783 fans at Taylor Field in Regina. Former Baltimore Colt Steve Myhra added 3 converts, 2 field goals, and a single. Edmonton quarterback Jackie Parker handed off to Tommy-Joe Coffey for the first Eskimo touchdown, rushed for the second himself, and passed to E.A. Sims for the third.

San Francisco catcher Tom Haller hit a 2-run home run off Whitey Ford in the top of the 2nd inning, and second baseman Chuck Hiller hit a grand slam--the first ever by a National League team in a World Series--off Marshall Bridges in the 7th. Juan Marichal started on the mound for the Giants, and was relieved by Bobby Bolin after pitching 4 scoreless innings. Don Larsen, who, six years earlier to the day, had pitched the only perfect game in World Series history, pitched just 1/3 of an inning of relief, but was credited with the win. Jim Coates, who replaced Mr. Ford on the mound to begin the 7th inning, took the loss.

Prescott Bush, 77. U.S. politician. Mr. Bush was a Wall Street banker who represented Connecticut in the United States Senate from 1952-1963. He took a liberal stand on population control and was involved with the American Birth Control League and Planned Parenthood. Mr. Bush disapproved of Senator Joseph McCarthy's attempts to expose Communists in the U.S. government, and was one of the majority of 67 Senators who voted to censure Mr. McCarthy in 1954. Mr. Bush was the father of George H.W. Bush (President of the United States from 1989-1993) and the grandfather of George W. Bush (President of the United States from 2001-2009).
Health
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration released a survey on over-the-counter remedies and warned that Americans were “wasting” money on worthless, unnecessary, and sometimes harmful patent medications and health products. The overuse was attributed to advertising as well as ignorance.

Oakland shortstop Bert Campaneris threw his bat at Detroit relief pitcher Lerrin LaGrow after being hit by a pitch; both players were ejected, and Mr. Campaneris was fined and suspended for the rest of the series, plus a few games at the beginning of the regular season in 1973.

The first five Cincinnati batters hit safely off Pittsburgh starting pitcher Bob Moose, and four of them scored, as the Reds evened the series before 50,584 fans at Three Rivers Stadium. Jack Billingham started on the mound for the Reds, and was removed in favour of Tom Hall with 2 out in the 5th inning and the score 4-2, leaving Mr. Billingham one out short of going the minimum distance necessary to get credit for the win. That credit went to Mr. Hall, who gave up just 2 hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Fernando Lamas, 67. U.S. actor. Mr. Lamas became a movie star in his native Argentina before moving to the United States, where he played "Latin lover" roles. He was the inspiration for comedian Billy Crystal's character "Fernando," and is said to have inspired his friend Jonathan Goldmsith's portrayal of The Most Interesting Man in the World in a series of television commercials for Dos Equis beer.

The Polish parliament approved a law banning the trade union movement Solidarity. Special riot policemen, known as ZOMO, were brought into Warsaw and barracked at several central hotels to guard against demonstrations. No protests occurred.
Swedish authorities reported that there had been a new contact with a Soviet submarine trapped along the coast of the Baltic Sea.
Economics and finance
The United States Labor Department reported that unemployment had reached 10.1% in September, a rise of 0.3% over the August figure, and the highest such figure in 42 years. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 11,260,000 people out of a total labour force of 110,980,000 were out of work—an increase of 45,000 over August. It was also estimated that the number of people who were not looking for jobs because they believed none were available had reached 1.6 million.
The U.S. Federal Reserve Board announced that it had lowered interest rates for loans to banks from 10%-9½ %, bringing the discount level to its lowest level since November 1978. Most of America’s major banks promptly lowered their prime rates from 13½%-12¼%.

Rev. Jerry Falwell resigned as chairman of the PTL television “ministry” and the entire board of directors also resigned, more than six months after Rev. Falwell had taken the reins at the request of the “ministry’s” founder, Jim Bakker, when Mr. Bakker had become entangled in a sex scandal. The resignations of Rev. Falwell and the board came the day after a U.S. federal bankruptcy court rejected a reorganization plan submitted by Rev. Falwell, and ordered creditors of PTL to submit their own plan.

The Pioneer Venus Orbiter, which had been orbiting Venus since December 4, 1978, plunged into the planet’s atmosphere with most of its instruments still operating.

Native leaders in Manitoba urged their people to vote against the Charlottetown Accord on October 26, stating that their existing treaty rights would be eroded by the constitutional agreement. Assembly of First Nations Grand Chief Ovide Mercredi countered their argument, saying that their concern was based on an outdated copy of the legal text.
