Baseball
World Series
New York Giants 6 @ Boston Red Sox 6 (11 innings, darkness) (Boston led best-of-seven series 1-0-1)

An error by New York shortstop Art Fletcher led to 3 unearned runs of starting pitcher Christy Mathewson in the bottom of the 1st inning. The Red Sox led 4-2 after 7 innings, but the Giants scored 3 in the top of the 8th before Mr. Fletcher's third error of the game allowed the tying run to score. The Giants scored a run in the top of the 10th, but Tris Speaker brought the Red Sox back into a tie in the bottom of the 10th when he tripled and scored on the play when New York catcher Art Wilson dropped the throw to home plate--after third baseman Buck Herzog had deliberately collided with Mr. Speaker in an effort to prevent an inside-the-park home run. Two Giants' batters reached first base in the top of the 11th, but both were thrown out trying to steal second base. The game, before 30,148 fans at Fenway Park, was called after 11 innings because of darkness.
