Susan Peters, 31
. U.S. actress. Miss Peters, born Suzanne Carnahan, showed promise in the early 1940s, receiving an Acadmy Award nomination for her supporting performance in Random Harvest (1942). On New Year's Day, 1945, she and her husband, director Richard Quine, were hunting, and her gun accidentally discharged and injured her spinal cord, leaving her a paraplegic. Miss Peters had trouble finding work after that, but starred in the movie The Sign of the Ram (1948) and a stage production of The Glass Menagerie (1949). She starred in the television soap opera Miss Susan (1951), but her health declined during the program's nine-month run. Miss Peters suffered from depression, and seemed to lose the will to win; she stopped eating and drinking, which hastened her death.

Normand Léveillé, 19, who was in his second season as a left wing with the Boston Bruins, collapsed in the team's dressing room with a brain aneurysm after the first period of the Bruins' game against the Vancouver Canucks at Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver. Mr. Léveillé was leading the team in scoring with 3 goals--including 2 game-winners--and 6 assists in 9 games. According to Bruins' head coach Gerry Cheevers, Mr. Léveillé was the team's best player. In his rookie year, Mr. Léveillé had scored 14 goals and 19 assists in 66 games. The Canucks won 3-2 on third-period goals by Harold Snepsts and Darcy Rota. Calgary (7-6-1) 19 @ Ottawa (4-10) 42
Edmonton (9-5) 33 @ Winnipeg (11-4) 17

Skip Walker rushed 27 times for 203 yards and 3 touchdowns and added 2 pass receptions for 89 yards--including an 80-yard touchdown from Chris Isaac--as the Rough Riders routed the Stampeders before 19,748 fans at Lansdowne Park. Mr. Isaac, who completed just 8 of 16 passes, but for 226 yards, also threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Carl Powell. Gerry Dattilio started at quarterback for the Stampeders and threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Mike McTague in the 3rd quarter. On the last play of the game, backup quarterback Phil Kessel completed an 8-yard pass to Willie Armstead for the other Calgary touchdown and then passed to Mr. Armstead for a 2-point convert.

Warren Moon threw touchdown passes to Waddell Smith, Brian Kelly, and Mark deBrueys as the Eskimos defeated the Blue Bombers before a sellout crowd of 32,946 at Winnipeg Stadium. The win kept the Eskimos' hopes of finishing first in the West Division alive; they had lost 32-26 to the Blue Bombers in Edmonton on August 1, so if the teams ended up tied in the standings, the Eskimos' 59-49 advantage in the games between the teams would give them home field for a playoff game. Winnipeg quarterback Dieter Brock left at the end of the 1st quarter when hit hard by two Edmonton defender, and was replaced by Mark Jackson for the rest of the game. Rick House rushed for both Blue Bomber touchdowns. It was the final game in the 7-year CFL career of Winnipeg defensive back Gregg Butler, who had played with the Eskimos from 1977-1980.

This blogger was among those in attendance at McMahon Stadium as the Dinos, playing without injured starting quarterback John Kalin, routed the Huskies. Jason Assen played the 1st half for Calgary and ran up a 43-0 lead; third-string Calgary quarterback Sasha Blaskovich played the 3rd quarter, when the Huskies reduced the deficit to 43-7; and fourth-string Dino quarterback Brett Campbell, seeing his only playing time of the year, led the team to 24 more points in the 4th quarter. I counted 4 Saskatchewan players who left the game with injuries that looked serious--or at least painful. It was the warmest weather I've ever experienced at a Dinos' home game.
