Jack Stivetts pitched for Boston and Cy Young for Cleveland, but the game was called after 11 innings with the score tied 0-0.

Billy Williams, 61. U.S. singer. Mr. Williams was lead singer of the Charioteers from 1930-1950 before forming the Billy Williams Quartet. His biggest it was a cover of Fats Waller's I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter, which reached #3 on at least one of the Billboard charts and #2 in Cash Box in 1957. He died in Chicago, reportedly in poverty.

World events
South Korean President Park Chung Hee proclaimed martial law, dissolved the National Assembly, and suspended all political activities in a move “to reform the political structure” of the nation, and to cope with the “rapidly changing international situation around us.” The move came six days after the governments of North and South Korea had held their first formal bilateral conference to improve relations between them and seek eventual reunification, and was also designed, Mr. Park said, to successfully carry on the dialogue between the Koreas. Since the talks had caused “legal and political” arguments as to their constitutionality. Mr. Park was also suspending part of the constitution, saying that his cabinet would draft amendments aimed at laying a legal basis for the talks.

Dieter Brock completed 17 of 22 passes for 259 yards and 2 touchdowns and rushed for a touchdown of his own in less than a half’s work as the Blue Bombers defeated the Argonauts before 42,830 fans at Exhibition Stadium. Kevin Cole, playing his first game since being acquired on waivers from the Edmonton Eskimos on September 1, scored the game’s first touchdown on a 32-yard pass from Mr. Brock in the 1st quarter. Trevor Kennerd converted and added a field goal before Mr. Brock rushed 1 yard for a touchdown and passed 30 yards to Ricky Martin for a TD. Mr. Brock suffered a back injury with the Blue Bombers leading 24-0 late in the 2nd quarter, and was replaced by Mark Jackson for the rest of the game. The Argonauts scored 2 touchdowns in the last 5 minutes and 15 seconds of the game when backup quarterback Joe Barnes pitched out to Cedric Minter for a 4-yard touchdown run and passed complete to Mr. Minter for a 2-point convert. With 2:03 remaining, Mr. Barnes found rookie Geoff Townsend open for his first CFL pass reception—a 35-yard touchdown. Mr. Barnes then passed to Terry Greer for a 2-point convert. Mr. Cole, playing what turned out to be his last regular season CFL game, rushed 13 times for 33 yards and caught 4 passes for 74. Mr. Martin, playing his first CFL game, caught 5 passes for 98 yards.

The Stampeders scored 2 touchdowns in a 29-second span in the last 1 minute 37 seconds of the game to defeat the Tiger-Cats before 25,720 fans at McMahon Stadium in the highest-scoring game in CFL history to that date. Calgary quarterback Gerry Dattilio rushed 6 yards for a touchdown at 13:23 of the 4th quarter. J.T. Hay’s convert tied the score 48-48. On the next possession, Calgary safety Darrell Moir intercepted a Tom Clements pass and returned it 20 yards for the winning touchdown at 13:52. James Sykes of the Stampeders rushed 13 times for 120 yards and touchdowns of 15 and 84 yards. Mr. Dattilio threw touchdown passes of 10 yards to Willie Armstead and 68 yards to Darrell Smith, while Rob Forbes scored the other Stampeder touchdown on a 1-yard fumble return. Mr. Clements completed 28 of 43 passes for 444 yards and touchdowns of 11 and 7 yards to Rocky DiPietro, 60 yards to Mark Bragagnolo, 45 yards to Steve Stapler, and 72 yards to Keith Baker.

Robin Yount batted 4 for 4 with a home run, a double, 2 runs, and 1 run batted in as the Brewers beat the Cardinals before 56,562 fans in the last World Series game to be played at County Stadium. Mr. Yount became the first player to have two 4-hit games in the same World Series. Mike Caldwell allowed 14 hits, but lasted 8 1/3 innings and won his second game of the series. The Cardinals rallied for 2 runs in the 9th inning and had runners on first and second bases with 1 out, but relief pitcher Bob McClure struck out Willie McGee and retired pinch hitter Gene Tenace on a fly ball to left field to end the game. Bob Forsch pitched 7 innings for the Cardinals in taking his second loss of the series.

Larry Crawford returned a punt 58 yards for a touchdown to open the scoring in the 1st quarter, and Roy Dewalt threw touchdown passes to Jim Sandusky and John Pankratz as the Lions beat the Tiger-Cats before 34,909 fans at B.C. Place Stadium in Vancouver. For Mr. Crawford, it was his third punt return touchdown of the year. Hamilton’s only touchdown came in the 4th quarter on a pass from Mike Kerrigan to Dan Huclack. It was the first game for the Lions under new head coach Larry Donovan, who had been named to the post when Don Matthews had been fired three days earlier. Former Lion and Montreal Concorde Roy Kurtz kicked a convert, field goal, and single in his first game as a Tiger-Cat. Former Oakland and Los Angeles Raider Kenny King rushed 15 times for 39 yards in his second and last game with Hamilton.
