The Rough Riders' win over the Tigers at the Cricket Grounds was mentioned in Gordon Currie's book 100 Years of Canadian Football (1968) asn an example of the emotions surrounding the rivalries in those days. The Hamilton fans were so upset by the rulings of referee McMaster that they chased him off the field at the end of the game, and he finally left with the Rough Riders, disguised in one of their uniforms. Rowdy fans threw items at the Ottawa team's carriage as it drove through the city on its way back to Ottawa, and Mr. McMaster was slightly injured when he was hit by a flying brick.

Queen's (1-0) 20 @ Ottawa (0-1) 19
McGill (1-0) 25 @ Toronto (0-1) 13

The Ottawa College team thought the final score of their game was 20-20, and thought that Queen's should have forfeited the game when they walked off the field after the last play. Queen's refused to continue play because they were under the impression that they had won the game. Newspaper reports were very critical of the referee's handling of the game. The final score favouring Queen's was upheld a few days later, and Ottawa College then announced that it would be withdrawing from the intercollegiate union after its next game.

Baseball
World Series Game 2
New York Giants 3 @ New York Yankees 3 (10 innings, darkness) (Giants led best-of-seven series 1-0-1)

Irish Meusel's 3-run home run off Bob Shawkey in the top of the 1st inning gave the Giants a 3-0 lead, but the Yankees chipped away at Giants' pitcher Jesse Barnes with single runs in the 1st, 4th, and 8th innings. There appeared to be at least a half-hour's daylight remaining when home plate umpire George Hildebrand, on advice from 3rd base umpire Bill Klem, called the game because of darkness after 10 innings. The 37,020 fans at the Polo Grounds were so outraged that baseball Commissioner Kenesaw M. Landis needed a police escort to leave the ballpark. That night he ordered the game's $120,554 receipts to be turned over to charity--half to New York charities, and half to disabled soldiers.

Football
CFL
Canadian Football League Commissioner Jake Gaudaur disallowed the Edmonton Eskimos' protest of their 10-9 loss at home to the Ottawa Rough Riders on September 23. The game had ended in confusion after Edmonton kicker Dave Cutler had missed a field goal, Ottawa's Rod Woodward had punted the ball out of the end zone, and Edmonton's Tom Wilkinson had punted the ball into the end zone for the tying point. Edmonton centre Bob Howes had been penalized for illegally interfering with Mr. Woodward when the Ottawa player was running downfield after kicking the ball. The Eskimos were under the impression that the Rough Riders had declined the penalty, which would have meant that the game ended in a tie. Mr. Gaudaur ruled that Ottawa defensive back Al Marcelin had indicated to referee Jim Lysack that the Rough Riders were accepting the penalty. The Rough Riders should have scrimmaged the ball once more, but Mr. Lysack ruled the game over because of the expiry of time and the number of fans who had come onto the field. Mr. Lysack's signal was misunderstood by the Eskimos to indicate that the penalty was being declined. Mr. Gaudaur regretted the breakdown in communications that had resulted in confusion on the part of fans at the game and watching across the country on television as to the game's final outcome.

Eleanor Swan, 19, was named Miss Toronto Argonaut for 1972.
