Born on this date
Harlan F. Stone
. 12th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, 1941-1946. Mr. Stone was U.S. Attorney General from 1924-1925 in the administration of President Calvin Coolidge, and was then appointed an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, replacing the retiring Charles Evans Hughes. Chief Justice Stone died in office on April 22, 1946 at the age of 73; he was succeeded by Fred Vinson.

The Tiger-Cats overcame a 12-0 halftime deficit to defeat the Argonauts before a Varsity Stadium crowd of 25,974. Quarterback Nobby Wirkowski rushed 2 yards for a touchdown and passed 12 yards to Uly Curtis for another to give the Argonauts their early lead. The Tiger-Cats struck in the 3rd quarter with touchdowns on a 65-yard pass from Bill Mackrides to Cam Fraser and a 30-yard interception return by Quincy Armstrong, sandwiched around a punt single by Mr. Fraser. Tip Logan and Mr. Mackrides scored Hamilton touchdowns in the 4th quarter before Mr. Wirkowski passed to Rod Smylie for the last major score.

Tom Casey caught 2 touchdown passes from Jack Jacobs and returned an interception 95 yards for another TD as the Blue Bombers defeated the Roughriders at Osborne Stadium. Mr. Jacobs also threw a touchdown pass to Keith Pearce, while Tommy Ford rushed for the other Winnipeg major. Ken Charlton scored the only Saskatchewan touchdown in the 2nd quarter.

Bob Shaw scored 2 touchdowns, 5 converts, and a field goal as the Stampeders beat the Eskimos before 13,000 fans at Clarke Stadium. Paul Salata, Dave West, and Bob Westlake also scored Calgary touchdowns. Normie Kwong scored 2 touchdowns for the Eskimos, while Jim Chambers, Rod Pantages, and Rae Enright each scored 1. Jack McKelvie kicked 2 field goals and a single and converted Corky Duchene's touchdown as the Imperials overcame an early 6-0 deficit to defeat the Redskins. Tom Moran scored a touchdown in the 1st quarter to give Brantford the lead.

Bill Bewley of the Varsity Blues was wide on a 25-yard field goal attempt from a bad angle in the final seconds of the game, but returner Cam Church was tackled in the end zone for a single point to give Toronto the tie before 13,000 fans at J.W. Little Memorial Stadium in London. Mr. Bewley had kicked a 17-yard field goal in the 3rd quarter, while Toronto's first 3 points had come on punt singles by Al Haig in the 1st quarter. The Mustangs scored the game's only touchdown in the 2nd quarter on a 15-yard fumble return by Syd O'Hara. Ray Truant missed the convert, but Gino Fracas kicked a single on the subsequent kickoff. Jimmy Carroll punted for a single in the 4th quarter to give Western a 7-6 lead.

Paul Ricca, 74. U.S. gangster. Born Felice DeLucia in Naples, Italy, Mr. Ricca changed his name after arriving in the United States at the age of 23. Known as "The Waiter," Mr. Ricca became friends with Al Capone and led the Chicago Outfit for more than 40 years.

Ron Anderson and Bill Hicke each scored 2 goals and Jim Harrison added a goal and 2 assists as the Oilers defeated the Nationals before a crowd announced at 5,006 at Ottawa Civic Centre in one of the first two regular season games in the history of the World Hockey Association. Mr. Anderson scored the WHA's first regular season goal ever at 6:19 of the 1st period when he his floating shot beat Ottawa goalie Les Binkley. Bob Charlebois scored the Nationals' first goal at 11:06 to tie the game 1-1, and then Mr. Hicke scored at 16:37 on a penalty shot to give the Oilers a 2-1 lead, and scored again just 15 seconds later. Ron Walters and Eddie Joyal scored the other Alberta goals. Mr. Charlebois scored twice for Ottawa, with Guy Trottier and Wayne Carleton scoring the others. Ken Brown was in goal for Alberta.

Gerry Cheevers stopped 21 shots as the Crusaders blanked the Nordiques before 9,681 fans at Cleveland Arena. Bob Dillabough scored the Crusaders' first goal ever at 10:30 of the 2nd period, and Ron Buchanan scored in the 3rd. Serge Aubry was in goal for Quebec.

The Reds trailed 2-1 going into the bottom of the 9th inning at Riverfront Stadium, but Johnny Bench led off with a home run off relief pitcher Dave Giusti to tie the score. Pinch runner George Foster scored the winning run on a wild pitch by Bob Moose. It was the last game for Pittsburgh right fielder Roberto Clemente. He had a single in 3 at bats, and drew an intentional base on balls in his final plate appearance.

American League Championship Series
Oakland 3 @ Detroit 4 (10 innings) (Best-of-five series tied 2-2)

The Athletics scored 2 runs in the top of the 10th inning at Tiger Stadium, but the Tigers rallied for 3 in the bottom of the inning to win the game and tie the series.

Edith Quimby, 91
. U.S. medical researcher and physicist. Professor Quimby spent most of her career of almost 60 years at Memorial Hospital for Cancer and Allied Diseases and Columbia University in New York City. She developed diagnostic and therapeutic applications of X-rays, and was concerned with protecting both those handling the radioactive material and making sure that those being treated were given the lowest dose necessary.

Craig Hosmer, 67. U.S. politician. Mr. Hosmer was an attorney with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission at Los Alamos, New Mexico. He represented California in the United States House of Representatives from 1953-1974.

Protest
Workers at the Lenin Shipyard in Gdansk, Poland went on strike to protest the law passed three days earlier by the Polish parliament outlawing the trade union movement Solidarity. The protest spread to other factories in the city; clashes between demonstrators and the special riot police known as ZOMO broke out, with the protesters setting fires and the police hurling tear gas grenades.

Bolivian President Hernan Siles Zuazo replaced the country’s entire military command in order to place the military under the authority of the new civilian government.

Britannica
The English warship Mary Rose, which had been sunk off Portsmouth harbour during a fight with French forces during the reign of Henry VIII, was raised, with most of its oak frame still intact. The ship had been the pride of the English fleet. The salvage operation had cost $7 million, but it was believed that the ship would contain 17,000 artifacts that would reveal much about the era of Tudor kings.

Bernie Ruoff of the Tiger-Cats punted into the Saskatchewan end zone on the last play of the game in an attempt to score a single point, but Stew Fraser of the Roughriders fielded the 58-yard punt near the back of the end zone and punted the ball out of bounds at his own 10-yard line as time expired at Ivor Wynne Stadium. The Tiger-Cats had led 14-3 after the 1st quarter on touchdown passes from Tom Clements to Mark Bragagnolo and Steve Kearns, but the Roughriders scored 18 straight points in the next 2 quarters, including a touchdown pass from Joe Adams to Chris DeFrance and a touchdown run by Mike Washington. Mr. Washington’s touchdown was set up by a 107-yard punt return by Fran McDermott from the Saskatchewan 1-yard line to the Hamilton 2; it was the longest play in CFL history to take place completely within the field of play. Down 24-16 with less than 4 minutes remaining in the game, Mr. Clements moved the Tiger-Cats downfield and connected with Mr. Bragagnolo with a 14-yard touchdown pass with 2:10 remaining. Mr. Clements then passed to Steve Stapler for a 2-point convert to tie the game.

Dieter Brock completed 19 of 30 passes for 288 yards and 4 touchdowns as the Blue Bombers barely held off a late Argonaut rally before 26,129 fans at Winnipeg Stadium. Mr. Brock threw touchdown passes of 46 and 41 yards to Nate Johnson in the 1st quarter and 29 yards to Martin Cox and 19 yards to Rick House in the 3rd quarter as Winnipeg built up a 32-14 lead after 3 quarters. The only Toronto touchdown during the first 3 quarters was scored by Cedric Minter on a 1-yard rush, while their most spectacular play was a 101-yard punt single by rookie Dean Dorsey. Toronto quarterback Condredge Holloway completed an 18-yard touchdown pass to Terry Greer, converted by Mr. Dorsey, with 9:39 remaining in the game to make the score 32-21. Another Argonaut drive ended when Winnipeg defensive back Vince Phason returned an interception 41 yards for a touchdown. Mr. Holloway threw a 25-yard TD pass to Bob Bronk; a 2-point convert attempt was unsuccessful, and the Argonauts trailed 39-27 with 3:33 left. The Argonauts quickly regained possession, and Mr. Greer completed a 39-yard touchdown pass to Scott McGhee, making the score 39-34 after Mr. Dorsey’s convert with 2:24 remaining. The Toronto defense held the Winnipeg offense again, and marched to the Blue Bombers’ 29-yard line with 8 seconds remaining. Slotback Jan Carinci attempted an onside kick into the Winnipeg end zone on the last play, but Winnipeg defensive back Paul Bennett fell on the ball, giving the Argonauts just a single point. Mr. Greer tied the CFL single-game record for pass receptions with 15, for 206 yards. It was the first CFL game for Winnipeg linebacker Aaron Brown and offensive tackle Roger Taylor.

Dave Ridgway’s 20-yard field goal with 3:40 remaining in the game gave the Roughriders their win over the Tiger-Cats before 12,541 fans at Ivor Wynne Stadium. Kent Austin made his CFL debut at quarterback for Saskatchewan, completing 15 of 24 passes for 292 yards and a 51-yard touchdown pass to Ray Elgaard. Walter Bender rushed 17 times for 39 yards and scored the other Roughrider TD. Former Oakland and Los Angeles Raider Kenny King rushed 19 times for 70 yards and a touchdown for the Tiger-Cats in his first CFL game. Hamilton quarterback Mike Kerrigan completed 29 of 47 passes for 361 yards and a touchdown to Rocky DiPietro, but also gave up 4 interceptions. Hamilton kicker and punter Paul Osbaldiston suffered a season-ending injury in the 1st half and was replaced by slotback Lee Knight for the balance of the game.

Rick Worman completed 15 of 30 passes for 299 yards and touchdowns to Emanuel Tolbert and Larry Willis, and also rushed 4 times for 35 yards and 2 touchdowns as the Stampeders routed the Lions before 31,244 fans at B.C. Place Stadium in Vancouver. Former Stampeder Greg Vavra started at quarterback for the Lions and completed 15 of 28 passes for 178 yards, but was unable to produce a touchdown and was replaced by veteran Condredge Holloway, playing his first game as a Lion. Mr. Holloway was 4 for 10 for 83 yards. It was the third straight loss for the Lions, and the last game for Don Matthews as their head coach. He lost a power struggle with general manager Joe Galat and was fired a few days later and replaced by assistant coach Larry Donovan.

Trailing 3-2, the Giants scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning to take a 6-3 lead before 59,363 fans at Candlestick Park. Joe Price relieved starting pitcher Rick Reuschel and pitched 5 innings of scoreless relief; Bob Forsch took the loss.

The Athletics scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning and another in the 6th to take a 6-1 lead, but Oakland manager Tony LaRussa removed starting pitcher Bob Welch after Robert Alomar doubled to lead off the 8th inning, and relievers Jeff Parrett and Dennis Eckersley failed to preserve the lead. The Blue Jays scored 3 runs in the 8th and tied the game in the 9th on a 2-run home run by Mr. Alomar. Pat Borders drove in Derek Bell with a sacrifice fly in the top of the 11th inning to put the Blue Jays ahead, and Tom Henke came on to get the save before 47,732 fans at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.
