Francis Hopkinson
. U.S. author, musician, artist, politician, and judge. Mr. Hopkinson wrote satires in pamphlets; designed the American flag; and signed the Declaration of Independence as a delegate from New Jersey. He played the harpsichord and wrote songs, becoming the first American-born composer to commit a song to paper (My Days Have Been So Wondrous Free (1759)). Mr. Hopkinson served as judge of the United States District Court for the District of Pennsylvania from 1789 until his death from an apoplectic seizure on May 9, 1791 at the age of 53.

John G. Crommelin
. U.S. military officer. Rear Admiral Crommelin served with the U.S. Navy from 1923-1950, one of five brothers in the Navy. He was an aviator in World War II, and was given command of the light aircraft carrier USS Saipan in 1946. Rear Adm. Crommelin was one of the participants in the "Revolt of the Admirals" in 1949, publicly protesting the Defense Department's reduction in naval expenses while increasing spending on the Air Force. He retired from the Navy in 1950 and operated part of his family's plantation in Alabama, while running for various political offices from 1950-1968 on racial segregationist policies, never coming close to winning. Rear Adm. Crommelin died on November 2, 1996, a month after his 94th birthday.

The United States launced the satellite Explorer 14, whose mission was to study energetic particles and magnetic fields, from Cape Canaveral, Florida. Astronauts Deke Slayton and Wally Schirra were relaxing the night before Mr. Schirra's Mercury-Atlas 8 mission by fishing, and were unaware that they were only a few hundred yards away from the launch pad until they heard the roar of the Thor-Delta rocket carrying Explorer 14. As Mr. Slayton said in his autobiography Deke! (1994), "if there had been any problems with the launch we'd have been in real trouble."

Baseball
Only 25,321 fans were in attendance at Dodger Stadium to see the second game of a best-of-three playoff for the National League pennant. The Giants had won the first game the previous day, and they had 24-game winner Jack Sanford starting on the mound against 25-game winner Don Drysdale. The Dodgers come back from a 5-0 deficit with 7 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to take a 7-5 lead, only to have the Giants score twice in the 8th to tie the game. Ron Fairly's sacrifice fly drove in Maury Wills in the bottom of the 9th as the Dodgers won 8-7. At 4 hours and 18 minutes, it was the longest 9-inning game in major league history. The Giants tied a National League record by using 8 pitchers in a 9-inning game.

The Montreal Expos and New York Mets split a doubleheader at Jarry Park in Montreal. The Expos won the first game 7-0 as Bill Stoneman pitched his second career major league no-hitter and his last major league complete game. His first no-hitter, on April 17, 1969, had been his first complete game. The Mets won the second game 2-1, scoring runs in each of the last 2 innings.

Buddy Bradford's pinch-hit grand slam in the 8th inning gave the Chicago White Sox a 6-4 win over the Minnesota Twins.

Iraqi officials reported that Iraqi troops had repelled an Iranian offensive into Iraq that had begun the previous day, and that Iraqi jets and helicopter gunships had inflicted heavy damage on Iranian forces just east of Baghdad. Iran denied these reports and claimed that it had gained control of a road running inside Iraqi territory from Mandali north to Naft Kaneh.

Dieter Brock threw touchdown passes to Joe Poplawski, Nate Johnson, and Rick House as the Blue Bombers beat the Lions before 31,867 fans at Empire Stadium in Vancouver. William Miller rushed 5 yards for the other Winnipeg touchdown. John Henry White and Larry Key scored B.C. touchdowns. Mr. Key’s TD came on a 55-yard rush in the 4th quarter. It was the final CFL game for veteran defensive end Mike Raines, and his only appearance in a Winnipeg uniform after 8 seasons, almost all with the Ottawa Rough Riders.

The California Angels beat the Texas Rangers 6-4 before 33,405 fans at Anaheim Stadium to clinch the American League West Division pennant.



The Baltimore Orioles beat the Milwaukee Brewers 11-3 before 47,235 fans at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore to tie the Brewers for first place in the American League East Division with 1 game remaining.



Rookie Brian Denman (3-4) of the Boston Red Sox pitched a shutout in his final major league game as the Red Sox blanked the New York Yankees 5-0 before 36,917 fans at Yankee Stadium.

Matt Dunigan rushed for a touchdown and passed to Marco Cyncar, Brian Kelly, and Rick House for touchdowns as the Eskimos scored 17 points in each half to defeat the Rough Riders before 31,331 fans at Commonwealth Stadium in 80 F. weather. Mr. Cyncar’s touchdown, with 19 seconds remaining in the 2nd quarter, was set up by an interception of a Joe Paopao pass by Don Wilson, and came just 1:11 after Mr. Paopao had completed a 19-yard touchdown pass to Gerald Alphin. The other Ottawa touchdown came in the 4th quarter: backup quarterback Brad Taylor entered the game with the Rough Riders in possession at their own 1-yard line after recovering an Edmonton fumble, and drove the team 109 yards, finishing with a handoff to Cedric Minter for a 2-yard touchdown run. The big play of the drive was a 67-yard pass from Mr. Taylor to Troy Smith.

Baseball
The Detroit Tigers erased a 3-0 deficit and edged the Toronto Blue Jays 4-3 before 45,167 fans at Tiger Stadium to move into a tie with the Blue Jays for first place in the American League East Division with 2 games remaining in the regular season. Toronto shortstop Manny Lee hit a 3-run home run off Detroit starting pitcher Doyle Alexander in the top of the 2nd inning, but the Tigers came back in the bottom of the inning with Scott Lusader's first major league home run, a 2-run shot off Toronto starter Jim Clancy. Alan Trammell's home run off Mr. Clancy tied the score in the bottom of the 3rd, and the Tigers scored the go-ahead run later in the inning off Mr. Clancy, who was relieved by David Wells. The Blue Jays had runners on first and second bases in the top of the 8th, but Mike Henneman relieved Mr. Alexander and put out the fire.

Relief flights to Sarajevo, Yugoslavia resumed. They had been cancelled for nearly a month after an Italian cargo plane had been shot down.

Brazilian paramilitary police invaded the overcrowded Casa de Detencao, the country’s largest prison, to quell a riot. 111 prisoners died during the conflict.

Politics and government
Brazilian President Fernando Collor de Mello, facing trial in the Senate on accusations of complicity in a multimillion-dollar bribery scheme, surrendered his powers. Mr. Collor’s wife was also under investigation for allegedly embezzling money from a federal charity she operated. Vice-President Itamar Augusto Franco took over as acting President.

Law
The United States House of Representatives voted 266-148 to overturn President George Bush’s veto of a bill that sought to overturn an administration regulation prohibiting abortion counselling at federally-financed family planning clinics. Fortunately, the vote fell 10 short of overturning the veto.

Canadiana
A temporary ban on sightseeing flights around Niagara Falls was put in place, three days after four people had been killed in the collision of two helicopters.

Economics and finance
The United States Labor Department reported that unemployment in September had decreased 0.1% to 7.5%. The U.S.A. had, however, lost 57,000 jobs, and private sector jobs showed a net loss of 25,000 since President George Bush had taken office in 1989.

Tom Muecke, who relieved injured starter Tracy Ham at quarterback in the 2nd quarter, threw 3 touchdown passes to lead the Eskimos over the Blue Bombers before a Commonwealth Stadium crowd of 26,680. Mr. Ham rushed 26 yards for a touchdown and completed 13 of 19 passes for 178 yards, including a 39-yard pass to Jim Sandusky for another TD, before injuring his groin. Mr. Muecke completed 17 of 22 passes for 348 yards and touchdowns of 15 yards to Craig Ellis, 68 yards to Mr. Sandusky, and 20 yards to Henry “Gizmo” Williams. Winnipeg quarterback Matt Dunigan threw touchdown passes to Gerald Alphin, Frank Pillow, and Michael Richardson. The Eskimos accumulated 639 yards in net offense. Winnipeg linebacker Chris Tsangaris started taking cheap shots at Mr. Williams, so Edmonton head coach Ron Lancaster finally decided to insert linebacker Mike McLean into the offensive backfield to settle things with Mr. Tsangaris.

Maher Arar, 32, a Canadian citizen and engineer who resided in Ottawa, was arrested at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York during a trip back to Canada from Tunisia and was deported to Syria. U.S. officials defended their actions, but Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Bill Graham filed an official protest with the U.S. government, demanding to know why Mr. Arar had been arrested.

Scandal
Andrew Fastow, former chief financial officer for Enron, was charged with fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy in connection with an accounting scandal that had hidden millions of dollars in debt at the bankrupt energy-trading company.

Baseball
The Milwaukee Brewers fired manager Jerry Royster.
