Boston Red Sox 2 @ New York Giants 5 (Boston led best-of-seven series 3-2-1)
The Giants scored all their runs in the 1st inning off surprise starting pitcher Buck O'Brien, while Rube Marquard pitched a complete game for his second win of the series. Mr. O'Brien, who suffered his second loss of the series, started at the insistence of Boston owner Jimmy McAleer, over the objection of manager Jake Stahl, who wanted to start Smoky Joe Wood. Mr. O'Brien wasn't told he was starting until game day; he had been out drinking the night before, and pitched with a hangover. He was replaced after 1 inning by Ray Collins, who followed with 7 innings of shutout pitching. There were suspicions that Mr. McAleer wanted the series to go longer so that he could make money from one or two more games in Boston. Attenedance for this game at the Polo Grounds was 30,622.
