Led by third baseman Arlie Latham, the St. Louis Browns of the American Association refused to play an exhibition baseball game against the all-Negro Cuban Giants, saying in a letter to the owner, "we will cheerfully play against white people at any time and think that by refusing to play [blacks] we are only doing what is right." Mr. Latham was fined.

Ray Lamanno's home run in the top of the 11th inning gave the Cincinnati Reds an 8-5 win over the Philadelphia Phillies, ruining the major league debut of Philadelphia's Eddie Freed. Mr. Freed hit a triple, 2 doubles, a single, and reached base on an intentional walk. Only 393 fans witnessed the game at Shibe Park in Philadelphia.

The Beatles re-recorded Love Me Do, their first single for Parlophone Records, a week after an earlier session. Ringo Starr had played drums on the September 4 session, but session musician Andy White played drums on the re-recording, with Mr. Starr on tambourine. The re-recorded version was released as a single in the U.K. (and later, in the U.S.A.), while the earlier version was released as a single in Canada. An even earlier session, on June 6, had taken place with Pete Best on drums, but that version remained unreleased until 1995, when it appeared on the first Beatles Anthology album.

Max Fleischer, 89. U.S. animator. Mr. Fleischer produced animated cartoons from the 1910s to the 1940s, and was best known for producing Betty Boop, Popeye, and Superman cartoons. He patented the rotoscope, which allowed film footage of a live figure to be used as a guide for drawing an animated figure. He and his brother Dave created and produced the first sound cartoons, of which Come Take a Trip in My Airship (1924) was the first to be released.

T. Claude Ryan, 84. U.S. aircraft manufacturer and executive. Mr. Ryan established the first year-round passenger air service in the United States--The San Diego-Los Angeles Airlines--in 1925. He opened the Ryan School of Aeronautics in 1931 and created various manufacturing companies through the years that bore his name. One of his designs was the Ryan ST, a monoplane sport aricraft and trainer that first flew in 1934. Mr. Ryan was invested in the International Aerospace Hall of Fame in 1965.
Richard McVay,55. U.S. football official. Mr. McVay, a football official at various levels since 1956 and an NCAA Big Ten official since 1974, was refereeing the game between the University of Michigan and University of Illinois at Memorial Stadium in Champaign, Illinois when he collapsed with 10 minutes remaining in the second quarter with a heart attack and was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital. Mr. McVay had refereed the 1982 Rose Bowl.

James Sykes rushed 15 times for 119 yards, including a 2-yard touchdown early in the 4th quarter, as the Stampeders upset the Blue Bombers before 30,119 fans at Winnipeg Stadium. Rick House scored the only Winnipeg touchdown on an 11-yard pass from Dieter Brock in the 3rd quarter. It was the second and last CFL game for former National Football League receiver Carlos Pennywell, who had been activated by the Blue Bombers after Eugene Goodlow had broken his neck several weeks earlier in a game against the Stampeders in Calgary.

Lorne Greene, 72. Canadian-born U.S. broadcaster and actor. Mr. Greene, a native of Ottawa, graduated from Queen's University and then became a newsreader for CBC radio during World War II, earning the nickname "The Voice of Doom." He then went to Hollywood, where he became famous in the role of Ben Cartwright in the television western series Bonanza (1959-1973). Mr. Greene was also a recording artist in the 1960s, and his spoken word ballad Ringo reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in the U.S.A. in 1964.
Peter Tosh, 42. Jamaican musician. Mr. Tosh, a Rastafarian (worshiping Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I as Jesus incarnate and believing in the use of marijuana for spiritual purposes), was a member of the influential reggae group The Wailers from 1963-1974 before embarking on a successful solo career. He was murdered in his home during a robbery.

Speaking in Miami, Florida, Pope John Paul II defended Israel as a homeland for the Jewish people but also supported the formation of a Palestinian homeland.

Tracy Ham completed touchdown passes of 72 yards to Henry “Gizmo” Williams and 12 yards to Chris Armstrong for the Eskimos, but also threw 3 interceptions. It was the Lions’ only road win of the season.
