Former major league baseball player Dave Fultz announced the formation of the Players' Fraternity. Membership would grow to 300 within two months.

Baseball
Jeff Tesreau pitched a no-hitter as the New York Giants blanked the Philadelphia Phillies 3-0 in the first game of a doubleheader at Baker Bowl in Philadelphia. The Giants won the second game 9-8 to complete the sweep.

In the second game of a doubleheader at Fenway Park in Boston, Smoky Joe Wood earned his 30th win of the season, striking out 9 in a dramatic pitching duel with Walter Johnson as the Boston Red Sox edged the Washington Nationals 1-0. The game's lone run came in the 6th inning on consecutive doubles by Tris Speaker and Duffy Lewis. Mr. Speaker's hit would ordinarily have been an easy fly out, but the ball dropped into the overflow crowd that had been cordoned off. The win was the 14th straight for Mr. Wood, and the loss was the 3rd straight for Mr. Johnson after 16 straight wins.

Died on this date
Henry Kimball Hadley, 65
. U.S. composer and conductor. Mr. Hadley conducted various orchestras, and was the first conductor of the San Francisco Symphony. In 1933 he founded the National Association for American Composers and Conductors, and a year later, founded the summer festival known today as Tanglewood. Mr. Hadley wrote five symphonies, five operas, as well as symphonic poems, and numerous choral, orchestral, and chamber works. He conducted the New York Philharmonic Orchestra for the soundtrack of the movie Don Juan (1926--the first motion picture with synchronized sound--and composed the first original motion picture score, for When a Man Loves (1927). Mr. Hadley was one of the most-performed composers of his time, but has largely been forgotten since his death after a long battle with cancer.

Television broadcasting in Canada officially began when CBFT in Montreal went on the air at 4 P.M. with children's programming. The station had been broadcasting test programs, including films and baseball games, for several weeks. CBFT carried programs in both English and French.

José Vicente de Freitas, 83
. Prime Minister of Portugal, 1928-1929. General de Freitas served in World War I, and supported the military coup that seized power in 1926. He served as Instruction Minister from 1927-1929.

Gertrude Lawrence, 54. U.K.-born U.S. actress. Miss Lawrence was a star in theatre in the West End of London and on Broadway in New York from the 1920s until her death. She specialized in musicals, appearing in such shows as London Calling! (1923); Oh, Kay! (1926); Private Lives (1931); Tonight at 8:30 (1936); Susan and God (1937); and Lady in the Dark (1941). Miss Lawrence played Anna Leonowens when The King and I opened on Broadway in 1951, and won the Tony Award in 1952 for Best Actress in a Musical. Declining health led her to miss a number of performances; her last appearance on stage was on August 16, 1952. She died in hospital just after being diagnosed with liver cancer. Rembrandt (1936); Men are Not Gods (1936) and The Glass Menagerie (1950) were among her few films.

19-year-old Neva Jane Lang, Miss Georgia, was named Miss America for 1953 at the annual pageant in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Uly Curtis scored 3 touchdowns to lead the Argonauts to their rout of the Alouettes before 18,700 fans at Varsity Stadium. Mr. Curtis caught a pass from quarterback Nobby Wirkowski for a 12-yard touchdown, and scored on rushed of 50 and 11 yards. Mr. Wirkowski also completed 2 touchdown passes to Al Bruno. Joe Krol--with his first TD in 2 years--and Doug Pyzer scored the other Toronto touchdowns.

2 field goals by Bob Shaw and 2 singles by Keith Spaith gave the Stampeders an 8-0 lead in the 3rd quarter before a capacity crowd of 12,000 at Mewata Stadium, but Ken Charlton, Holland Apling, and Bob Pelling scored touchdowns to give the Roughriders the victory.

Jack Jacobs' touchdown pass to Andy Sokol in the last minute gave the Blue Bombers their win over the Eskimos before 13,807 fans at Clarke Stadium. Gerry Palmer scored the first Winnipeg touchdown in the 1st quarter, and Mr. Jacobs completed a 4-yard touchdown pass to Mel Embree just before halftime. Normie Kwong rushed for 2 Edmonton touchdowns, adn Claude Arnold completed a pass to Joe Aguirre for the other, all converted by Mr. Aguirre.

Chuck Bolton and Fred Smale scored touchdowns for Balmy Beach in their win over the Redskins. George Kunkel scored the lone Brantford touchdown on a 40-yard fumble return.

Corky Duchene scored 2 touchdowns to lead the Imperials over the Royals before 2,000 fans on a windy Saturday in Sarnia. Mr. Glendenning and Mr. McAffee also scored Sarnia touchdowns, while Dutch Davey added a field goal and 4 converts. Bill Todd broke up the shutout with a touchdown for the Royals in the 4th quarter, converted by Dick Neveux.

Robin Roberts pitched a complete game as the Philadelphia Phillies edged the Boston Braves 7-6 in 17 innings in the first game of a doubleheader at Shibe Park in Philadelphia. Sid Gordon of the Braves batted 5 for 8. The Phillies trailed 6-2 after 8 innings. Del Ennis ended the game with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the 17th inning.

The Lions led the Alouettes 5-0 at halftime, making it 12-0 after 3 quarters on a 1-yard touchdown rush by Nub Beamer. George Dixon then rushed 15 yards for a Montreal touchdown at 6:20 of the 4th quarter; 9 yards for another touchdown at 10:06; and 22 yards for another TD at 11:21, giving him 3 touchdowns in 5 minutes and 1 second. Bobby-Jack Oliver converted all 3. B.C. quarterback Joe Kapp completed an 18-yard touchdown pass to Mack Burton with 24 seconds remaining. Lions' head coach Dave Skrien complained that telephone communication from the Lions' spotters in the press box to the sidelines had been cut off at halftime, leaving the coaches unable to make quick adjustments. Mr. Dixon finished with 60 yards on 18 carries. Attendance at Molson Stadium was 19,350.

Terrorism
In response to the deaths of 11 members of the Israeli Olympic team at the hands of Black September terrorists the previous day, the summer Olympic games in Munich were suspended for just one day. Avery Brundage, head of the International Olympic Committee, said that a “handful of terrorists” would not be allowed “to destroy this nucleus of international cooperation and goodwill.” Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir expressed her appreciation to West Germany for deciding to “take action for the liberation of the Israeli hostages and to employ force to this end.”

Yuri Lebedev and Aleksandr Bodunov scored for the Soviets late in the 2nd period after Canada had taken a 4-2 lead, and the 3rd period was scoreless. Vladimir Petrov and Vladimir Kharlamov scored the first two Soviet goals, while Jean-Paul Parise, Jean Ratelle, Phil Esposito, and Paul Henderson scored for Canada. Canada outshot the U.S.S.R. 38-25. Tony Esposito played his second straight game in goal for Canada, with Vladislav Tretiak again in goal for the Soviets. The game at Winnipeg Arena was the only game of the series played in a Canadian city without an NHL team.

Mickey Lolich picked up his 20th win of the season as the Detroit Tigers edged the Baltimore Orioles 4-3.

Terrorism
A group of armed men claiming to belong to a Polish resistance organization seized the Polish embassy in Bern, Switzerland and threatened to blow up the embassy unless martial law regulations in Poland were lifted by the Polish government. 14 Polish diplomats and members of the embassy staff were captured, but a pregnant woman was released. The group’s leader, who claimed to have about 55 pounds of explosives, gave the Polish government 48 hours to agree to his terms.

Tom Clements completed touchdown passes of 9 yards to Rocky DiPietro and 62 yards to Keith Baker and rushed 42 yards for a touchdown to lead the Tiger-Cats over the Concordes in front of an Ivor Wynne Stadium crowd of 17,370. Montreal’s lone touchdown came midway through the 4th quarter on a 17-yard pass from Luc Tousignant to Howard Ballage, followed by a 2-point convert pass from Mr. Tousignant to Mike Rodrigue.

Gerry Dattilio completed touchdown passes of 48 yards to Darrell Smith and 5 yards to Willie Armstead and rushed 16 yards for a touchdown to lead the Stampeders to their first Labour Day win over the Eskimos since 1971 before 33,577 fans at McMahon Stadium. Mike Kirkley of the Stampeders rushed 1 yard for his only CFL touchdown in the 3rd quarter. Tom Scott scored both Edmonton touchdowns on passes from Warren Moon. Ken Walter played centre for the Eskimos in his first CFL game after a season and a half on the injured list, while Randy Trautman played his first CFL game at defensive tackle for the Stampeders. Edmonton media “experts” promptly wrote off the team’s chances of winning the Grey Cup for a fifth straight season.

Tom Clements threw 2 touchdown passes in the last 1½ minutes as the Blue Bombers came from behind to defeat the Roughriders before 27,457 fans on a windy Sunday afternoon at Taylor Field in Regina. Mr. Clements completed a 5-yard touchdown pass to James Murphy with 1:21 remaining in regulation time and connected with Perry Tuttle for a 37-yard touchdown just 25 seconds later. Mr. Clements also threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Boyd I the 1st quarter, while quarterback Tom Burgess rushed 1 yard in the 3rd quarter for the only Roughrider touchdown. Saskatchewan kicker Dave Ridgway kicked 5 field goals, the third of which, on the last play of the 1st half, covered 60 yards, breaking a record that had been set by Dave Cutler of the Edmonton Eskimos at Taylor Field in 1970 and tied by Paul Watson of the Roughriders, also in Regina, in 1981.

. U.S. screenwriter. Mr. Ephron often collaborated with his wife Phoebe, and was known for writing screenplays for movies such as There's No Business Like Show Business (1954); Carousel (1956); Desk Set (1957); and Captain Newman, M.D. (1963), receiving an Academy Award nomination for the latter. His four daughters also became notable writers.

Warren Hudson and Michael Richardson rushed for Winnipeg touchdowns. Kevin Simien, who had played in 3 post-season games—including the Grey Cup—with the Calgary Stampeders in 1991, played his only CFL regular season game, catching 1 pass for 11 yards for the Blue Bombers.

Albert Belle hit 3 home runs and Carlos Martinez hit a grand slam with 2 out in the 12th inning as the Cleveland Indians beat the Seattle Mariners 12-9. Mr. Martinez's home run was the fourth grand slam hit off losing pitcher Mike Schooler in 1992, tying a major league record for a single season.

Jason Tucker caught 7 passes for 146 yards and 2 touchdowns, while John Avery caught a 25-yard touchdown pass and rushed 17 yards for an Eskimo touchdown. Sean Fleming added 4 converts and 5 field goals. Scott Regimbald rushed 1 yard for the only Calgary touchdown in the 3rd quarter.

The Oakland Athletics' American League record 20-game winning streak ended when they were blanked 6-0 by the Minnesota Twins.
