Joan, 41. Queen consort of Scotland, 1329-1362. Joan of the Tower, the daughter of King Edward II and Queen Isabella of England, was born in the Tower of London. She was married at the age of 7 in 1328 to David, 4, son of Robert the Bruce, and became queen consort of Scotland when her husband acceded to the throne as King David II. After the English forces of King Edward III won the Battle of Haldion Hill in 1333, King David and Queen Joan fled into exile in France, living under the protection of King Philippe VI. They were able to return to Scotland in June 1341, with King David ruling under his own power. He was taken prisoner during the Battle of Neville's Cross in 1346, and spent 11 years in the Tower of London. Queen Joan was allowed to visit him several times, but didn't become pregnant. After King David's release, Queen Joan decided to remain in England, where she died.

The Battle of Borodino was fought betweeen France and Russia. More than 250,000 troops participated in the largest one-day battle of the Napoleonic Wars, and 70,000 casualties resulted. French forces captured a tactical victory in this part of Russia but failed to destroy the Russian army, despite inflicting heavy casualties and forcing the Russian army out of position.

Ed Daily. U.S. baseball player. Mr. Daily was an outfielder and pitcher who played for seven major league teams from 1885-1891. In 640 major league games he batted .239 with 19 home runs and 288 runs batted in, while posting a 66-69 won-lost record as a pitcher with an earned run average of 3.39. Mr. Daily died of consumption on October 21, 1891 at the age of 29.

James J. “Gentleman Jim” Corbett (9-0-2-3) knocked out John L. Sullivan (38-1-1-1) at 1:30 of the 21st round at the Olympic Club in New Orleans to win the world heavyweight title. It was the first heavyweight title fight in which modern gloves were used, and Mr. Sullivan’s last fight.

Arthur "Bugs" Raymond, 30. U.S. baseball pitcher. Mr. Raymond was found dead of a brain hemorrhage in his room at the Hotel Valey in Chicago, two days after his skull had been fractured in a bar fight. Mr. Raymond pitched with the Detroit Tigers (1904), St. Louis Cardinals (1907-1908), and New York Giants (1909-1911), compiling a record of 45 wins and 57 losses. He led the National League in losses with 25 in 1908, despite a low 2.03 earned run average. In 1909 Mr. Raymond went 18-12 with the Giants; he dropped to 4-11 in 1910, but had improved to 6-4 in 1911 when he was kicked off the team by manager John McGraw because of his drinking.

Buster Brown; Smoky Owens. U.S. baseball players. Messrs. Brown and Owens were members of the Cincinnati Buckeyes of the Negro American League. They were killed when their car was hit from behind in Geneva, Ohio while they were changing a flat tire. The accident hospitalized their teammates Eugene Bremmer and Lefty Watts.

At an air show at Farnborough, England, a new de Havilland 110 twin jet fighter exploded in the air, killing pilot John Derry, 30, observer Tony Richards, and 25 spectators, while 65 more were injured. 130,000 people were in attendance.

At Engel Stadium in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Don Grate, an outfielder with the Chattanooga Lookouts of the Southern League, threw a baseball 434' 1", breaking a record that had stood sonce 1910.
In a Tri-State League playoff gmae, Dean Stone of Charlotte pitched a no-hitter as Charlotte blanked Anderson 5-0. The no-hitter was Mr. Stone's second of the year, and came 4 days after teammate Bob Danielson had pitched a 1-0 no-hitter against Anderson.
Johnny Mize's pinch-hit grand slam gave the New York Yankees a 5-1 win over the Washington Nationals.

Leo Lewis scored 2 touchdowns for the Blue Bombers in their win over the Rough Riders before 21,050 fans at Lansdowne Park. Gerry James added a touchdown and 4 converts, while Henry Janzen also scored a Winnipeg touchdown. Ernie White scored 2 touchdowns for the Rough Riders, with Bob Simpson and Whit Tucker scoring the others. The Blue Bombers led 28-7 after 3 quarters, but the Rough Riders came roaring back in the 4th quarter. Jack Delveaux's punt single gave Winnipeg a 29-28 lead, and with just over 3 minutes remaining, Mr. Tucker fielded one of Mr. Delveaux's punts just outside the Ottawa end zone and went back into the end zone to concede a safety touch to make the score 31-28. The Rough Riders kicked off, hoping to pin the Blue Bombers deep in their own territory, but the Blue Bombers were able to control field position and the clock.

Ed Williams scored 3 touchdowns and Mack Herron added 2 as the Blue Bombers routed the Lions before a capacity crowd of 25,210 at Winnipeg Stadium. Mr. Herron rushed 20 times for 149 yards, while Mr. Williams rushed 9 times for 83 yards and 2 touchdowns, with his other TD coming on a 33-yard pass from starting quarterback Don Jonas. backup quarterback Tommy Pharr rushed for the final Winnipeg touchdown. The lone B.C. touchdown came on a 14-yard pass from backup quarterback Don Bunce to Johnny Musso in the 4th quarter.

Ken Boyer, 51. U.S. baseball player and manager. Mr. Boyer, the second of three brothers who played in the major leagues, was a third baseman with the St. Louis Cardinals (1955-1965); New York Mets (1966-1967); Chicago White Sox (1967-1968); and Los Angeles Dodgers (1968-1969). In 2,034 games he batted .287 with 282 home runs and 1,141 runs batted in, and won five Gold Gloves for fielding excellence. He was the Most Valuable Player in the National League in, 1964, batting .295 with 20 home runs and a National League-leading 119 RBIs. He played in all 7 games of the Cardinals' World Series win over the New York Yankees that year; he batted just .222 with 2 home runs and 6 runs batted in, but one of his homers was a grand slam that gave the Cardinals a 4-3 win in game 4. In the seventh game, Mr. Boyer had a home run, double, single, and 3 runs as the Cardinals won 7-5. He managed the Cardinals from 1978-1980, compiling a record of 166-190. Mr. Boyer died of lung cancer; his jersey #14 was retired by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1984.

The biennial convention in Louisville of the Lutheran Church in America recommended establishing communion fellowship with Episcopalians, meaning that Lutherans and Episcopalians could celebrate communion together while using the rites of either church, and members of either denomination could take communion in each other’s churches. The Commission on Ecumenical Relations of the Episcopal Church had already endorsed the idea.

Michael Bishop threw touchdown passes to Mike Morreale and Mookie Mitchell in the 4th quarter as the Argonauts came from behind to defeat the Renegades before 21,604 fans at Frank Clair Stadium. Mr. Bishop connected with Mr. Morreale for a 7-yard touchdown with 6:22 remaining to reduce Ottawa’s lead to 25-23. A 2-point convert attempt was unsuccessful, but Mr. Bishop completed an 86-yard touchdown pass to Mr. Mitchell with 3:49 remaining for the winning score. Bashir Levingston scored the first Toronto touchdown on a 90-yard punt return early in the 1st quarter. Josh Ranek rushed 3 yards for the Renegades’ first touchdown in the 2nd quarter, and Chuck Clements threw 77 yards to Jimmy Oliver for the other Ottawa touchdown in the 3rd quarter. Lawrence Tynes, playing his first CFL game, added 2 converts and 2 field goals for the Renegades, and averaged 70 yards on 3 kickoffs.
