After the Cubs took a 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning, Lou Gehrig hit a 3-run home run to give the Yankees a 3-2 lead after 4 innings. The Yankees then scored 6 runs in the last 3 innings to put the game away. Red Ruffing pitched a complete game to get the win over Guy Bush. Attendance at Yankee Stadium was 41,459.

Philadelphia Athletics' owner and manager Connie Mack began dismantling his team, selling outfielders Al Simmons and Mule Haas and third baseman Jimmy Dykes to the Chicago White Sox for an estimated $100,000.

Virgil Wagner scored a touchdown to give the Alouettes an early lead, but Nobby Wirkowski completed 2 touchdown passes to Uly Curtis to win the game for the Argonauts before 17,472 fans at Delorimier Stadium in the first football game in Canada to be televised; it was broadcast to viewers in Montreal by CBFT. It was also the first game as an Argonaut for end Zeke O'Connor.

Corky Duchene scored 3 touchdowns to lead the Imperials over Balmy Beach before 5,000 fans at Maple Leaf Stadium. Johnny Sells and Joe Florence scored the other Sarnia touchdowns. Johnny Pont of Balmy Beach rushed for 145 yards and a touchdown, and returned a kickoff 90 yards for the other Toronto TD.

Baseball
The Brooklyn Dodgers and Boston Braves played to a 5-5 tie in 12 innings at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn in the last regular season game played by the Braves while the team was based in Boston.

Rory Storm, 34
. U.K. musician. Mr. Storm, born Alan Caldwell, was lead singer and guitarist with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, the group that Ringo Starr was playing with when he left to replace Pete Best as drummer with the Beatles in 1962. Mr. Storm died of a possibly accidental combination of sleeping pills and alcohol. His mother was found dead in the same house the next day; speculation was that she committed suicide after finding her son dead. Canada 6 U.S.S.R. 5 (Canada won series 4-3-1)

Paul Henderson scored the most famous goal in hockey history with 34 seconds remaining in the game to win the game and the series for Canada. Canada trailed 5-3 after 2 periods, but Phil Esposito and Yvan Cournoyer scored to tie the game 5-5. The teams took turns scoring in the 1st period, with Aleksandr Yakushev opening the scoring for the U.S.S.R. Mr. Esposito scored to tie it, Igor Lutchenko put the Soviets ahead again, and Brad Park tied it again. Vladimir Shadrin gave the Soviets a 3-2 lead in the 2nd period, but Bill White tied the game before Mr. Yakushev scored his second goal of the game and Vladimir Vasiliev gave the U.S.S.R. a 5-3 lead after 2 periods. Mr. Henderson's goal was his third straight game-winner. It was the only game that Canada won with Ken Dryden in goal. Vladislav Tretiak played the entire series in goal for the Soviets.

Israeli troops were withdrawn from the port of Beirut, but others remained at Beirut International Airport. U.S. President Ronald Reagan announced that U.S. Marines would land in Beirut the next day and would remain there until all Syrian and Israeli troops were withdrawn from Lebanon.

Baseball
In the first game of a doubleheader between the Minnesota Twins and Toronto Blue Jays, Jim Clancy of the Blue Jays pitched 8 perfect innings before yielding a single to Randy Bush. Mr. Clancy won a 3-0 1-hitter. The Blue Jays completed the sweep when they overcame a 3-0 deficit to win 4-3, knocking Minnesota starting pitcher Terry Felton out of the box. It was the final major league game for Mr. Felton, who took the loss and left the majors with a career record of 0-13.

The Milwaukee Brewers beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-4 at Exhibition Stadium in Toronto, while the Baltimore Orioles blanked the Detroit Tigers 3-0 at Tiger Stadium, leaving the Blue Jays 2 1/2 games ahead of the Tigers in the race for the American League East Division pennant. The Blue Jays had 5 games remaining, the Tigers 6.

Paul McCallum kicked 5 field goals—including kicks of 56 and 52 yards—as the Rough Riders beat the Renegades before 20,098 fans on a windy day at Taylor Field in Regina. The Roughriders scored both of their touchdowns in the 3rd quarter, on a 19-yard pass from Nealon Greene to Brian Roberson and a 1-yard rush by Chris Szarka. The Renegades scored their only touchdown on a 39-yard pass from Dan Crowley to Damon Hodge on the first play of the 4th quarter.

The Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Colorado Rockies 17-9 to clinch the National League West Division pennant, while the San Francisco Giants defeated the Houston Astros 4-2 to clinch the NL wild card playoff spot.
