Hal Waggoner rushed 15 yards for the clinching touchdown late in the 3rd quarter, two plays after Bernie Custis had returned a kickoff 85 yards to the Ottawa 45-yard line, as the Tiger-Cats beat the Rough Riders before 16,000 fans at Civic Stadium. The TD was the second of the game for Mr. Waggoner; other Hamilton touchdowns were scored by Bill Mackrides and Dick Brown. Howie Turner and Bob Simpson scored touchdowns in the 3rd quarter for the Rough Riders, who trailed 18-1 at halftime.

Mike King, Rae Enright, and Joe Aguirre scored Edmonton touchdowns, with Mr. Aguirre converting all 3.

Keith Spaith threw to Pete Thodos for the winning touchdown in the 3rd quarter as the Stampeders overcame a 6-0 1st-quarter deficit to defeat the Roughriders before 12,000 fans at Taylor Field in Regina.

The Redskins outscored the Royals 25-0 in the 2nd half to record their first win in the ORFU. Quarterback Al Dekdebrun directed a balanced attack that produced 2 touchdowns by Tom Moran, and 1 each by Messrs. Holland, Kinder, Brady and Granby. Messrs. Lee and Bissett scored touchdowns for Windsor in the 2nd quarter.

Hank Tamowski recovered a fumbled punt in the McMaster end zone and Ted Lansky recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for another Toronto TD as the Varsity Blues took a 13-0 lead in the 1st quarter and held on to defeat the Marauders before 14,579 fans at Varsity Stadium. Max Woolley scored both McMaster touchdowns on 1-yard runs in the 2nd and 4th quarters.

Baseball
Billy Meyer announced his resignation after 5 years as manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 1952 Pirates finished with a record of 42-112, the worst of any major league team of the 1950s.

Eddie Mathews hit 3 home runs to lead the Boston Braves past the Brooklyn Dodgers 11-3 at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn. It was the last major league win for pitcher Virgil Jester, and the last regular season win for the Braves while the franchise was based in Boston.

Defensive end Herb Gray's 15-yard interception return for a touchdown late in the 2nd quarter proved decisive as the Blue Bombers beat the Alouettes before 16,532 fans at Winnipeg Stadium. Mr. Gray's interception, which gave Winnipeg a 22-14 lead after the convert, came when Montreal quarterback Sandy Stephens, scrimmaging from his own 10-yard line, attempted to pass under pressure and attempted to pass. Roger Hagberg scored 2 touchdowns for the Blue Bombers, while Gerry James scored a touchdown, 2 converts, a field goal, and a single. George Dixon rushed for 193 yards and 2 touchdowns for the Alouettes. Tom Cloutier scored the other Montreal touchdown on a pass from Mr. Stephens. Vic Chapman, playing his first game as an Alouette after being acquired from the Edmonton Eskimos, punted for 2 singles.

Don Jonas threw touchdown passes of 23 yards to Bob LaRose, 54 yards to Jim Thorpe, and 8 yards to Mack Herron as the Blue Bombers held on to defeat the Alouettes before 20,836 fans at Winnipeg Stadium. Ike Brown rushed 1 yard for the first Montreal touchdown in the 1st quarter, and quarterback Sonny Wade threw touchdown passes of 7 yards to Peter Dalla Riva and 41 yards to John Eason. Mr. Wade led a late drive into scoring position, but on a third-down-and-7 yards to go from the Winnipeg 26-yard line with less than 3 minutes remaining in the game, Mr. Wade completed a pass to Mr. Brown, but he was stopped 1 yard short of the first down by Winnipeg linebacker Paul Robson.

The only Hamilton touchdown was scored by quarterback Tom Porras on a 4-yard rush with 46 seconds remaining in the game. Mr. Porras then threw to Jacques Chapdelaine for a 2-point convert. Mr. Willis caught 4 passes for 166 yards, while Tony Champion of the Tiger-Cats caught 6 for 134. Hamilton’s Johnnie Jones led all rushers with 101 yards on 10 carries.



Dave Ridgway kicked 5 field goals and 2 converts as the Roughriders beat the Lions before 24,682 fans at Taylor Field in Regina. Walter Bender rushed 23 times for 79 yards and scored the first Saskatchewan touchdown. Safety Glen Suitor scored the Roughriders’ other touchdown on a 34-yard interception return. Jim Sandusky scored both B.C. touchdowns, on a 75-yard pass from starting quarterback Roy Dewalt in the 2nd quarter, and a 22-yard pass from backup quarterback Greg Vavra with 26 seconds remaining in the game. Saskatchewan quarterback Jeff Bentrim completed just 8 of 21 passes for 99 yards. Messrs. Dewalt and Vavra completed just 17 of 40, but for 375 yards.

Kirk Gibson hit a home run in the top of the 9th inning off Tom Henke to tie the game 2-2 and then drove in Jim Walewander with a bloop single off Jeff Musselman in the top of the 13th inning as the Detroit Tigers avoided a series sweep and edged the Toronto Blue Jays 3-2 before 46,346 fans at Exhibition Stadium in Toronto to stay with 2 1/2 games of the American League East Division leaders. The Blue Jays had a 96-60 record after the loss, while the Tigers were 93-62. Alexix Infante made his major league debut with the Blue Jays as a pinch runner for Ernie Whitt with 2 out in the bottom of the 13th, but was erased on a force play to end the game.

The San Francisco Giants clinched a tie for the National League West Division pennant with a 15-6 win over the Atlanta Braves before 26,019 fans at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. 48-year-old Phil Niekro, who had pitched with the Braves from 1964-1983 before moving on to the New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians, and most recently, the Toronto Blue Jays, started on the mound for Atlanta in a farewell appearance. He pitched 3 scoreless innings as the Braves built a 5-0 lead, but faced 5 batters in the 4th, all of whom scored. Mr. Niekro left with no decision in the 866th and last game of his 24-year major league career. Candy Maldonado, who entered the game immediately after the departure of Mr. Niekro, hit a grand slam off relief pitcher Chuck Cary (0-1) and drove in 6 runs for the Giants, while Juan Uribe made 4 hits and scored 4 runs.

Mr. Campbell’s touchdown was set up by a 37-yard interception return by Charles Gordon, one of 10 turnovers that the teams combined to produce. B.C. quarterback Danny Barrett rushed 2 yards for the Lions’ first touchdown in the 1st quarter, while defensive tackle Lee Johnson returned a fumble 18 yards for the other B.C. touchdown in the 2nd quarter. James Ellingson scored the first Ottawa touchdown on a 13-yard pass from Tom Burgess in the 1st quarter, and Darren Joseph rushed 9 yards for a Rough Rider TD in the 2nd quarter.

Troy Westwood kicked 2 field goals and a single with a 40-mile per hour wind behind him in the 4th quarter to give the Blue Bombers their win over the Stampeders before 24,694 fans at Winnipeg Stadium. The winning point was a single on a missed 33-yard field goal attempt with 3:50 remaining in regulation time. Mr. Westwood finished with 4 field goals and 2 singles. The game’s only touchdown was scored in the 1st quarter by the Stampeders on a 20-yard pass from Doug Flutie to Andy McVey. Mr. Flutie completed just 16 of 40 passes for 223 yards. The Blue Bombers outrushed the Stampeders 243 yards to 70, led by Michael Richardson’s 193 yards on 27 carries.

Jack Morris picked up his 20th win of the season as the Toronto Blue Jays routed the New York Yankees 12-2 at Yankee Stadium.

Randy Johnson of the Seattle Mariners tied Ron Guidry's American League record for strikeouts by lefthanded pitchers in a 9-inning game when he struck out 18 in a 3-2 loss to the Texas Rangers.

Damon Allen completed just 10 of 23 passes, but threw 2 touchdown passes to Ryan Thelwell and another to Jason Clermont as the Lions beat the Blue Bombers before 20,191 fans at B.C. Place Stadium in Vancouver. Lyle Green and Sean Millington also scored B.C. touchdowns on short runs. Winnipeg quarterback Khari Jones completed 39 of 55 passes for 380 yards, but the Blue Bombers were held without a touchdown until Mr. Jones completed a 2-yard pass to Mike Sellers with just 2:09 remaining in regulation time, followed by a 2-point convert pass to Milt Stegall. The Blue Bombers recovered a short kickoff, and Mr. Stegall caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Mr. Jones with 1:15 remaining.
