Guy Hecker pitched a no-hitter as the Louisville Eclipse beat the Pittsburgh Alleghenys 3-1 at Exposition Park in Pittsburgh. Tony Mullane had pitched a no-hitter for the Eclipse against the Cincinnati Reds just eight days earlier.

Boston Beaneaters' pitcher Kid Nichols helped his own cause by hitting a grand slam in the top of the 5th inning and a bases-loaded triple in the top of the 6th as the Beaneaters took a 14-0 lead over the Baltimore Orioles. He had to leave the game in the bottom of the 6th when he was hit by a batted ball, and the Orioles made a comeback but still lost 14-11 at Union Park in Baltimore.

Hank Greenberg became the first player ever to hit a home run into the center field stands at Yankee Stadium as he helped the Detroit Tigers beat the Yankees 8-1. Winning pitcher Eldon Auker pitched a 5-hitter and batted in 3 runs.

Mississippi Governor Ross Barnett blocked James Meredith, a Negro, from enrolling at the University of Mississippi.

Baseball
Walt Bond and Johnny Romano both hit consecutive home runs twice and also had back-to-back doubles to help the Cleveland Indians defeat the Kansas City Athletics 10-9. Mr. Bond drove in 6 runs and Mr. Romano 4. Dick Donovan picked up his 20th win of the season despite being knocked out of the box in the 6th inning.

Ami Shachori, 44
. Israeli diplomat. Dr. Shachori, an agricultural attaché at the Israeli embassy in London, was killed when he opened a booby-trapped parcel in a pile of mail. Another embassy official was seriously injured in the attack by the Black September terrorist organization.

Baseball
The Chicago White Sox and Oakland Athletics combined to use a record 51 players as the White Sox won 8-7 in 15 innings. The Athletics used a record 30 players.

Cesar Tovar hit for the cycle as the Minnesota Twins beat the Texas Rangers 5-3.

The United States Justice Department reported that 30% of homes in the U.S.A. had been touched by crime in 1981, a figure unchanged from the previous year. Nearly 25 million households experienced a crime of violence or theft, and 10% of all households were touched by a burglary or a violent crime by a stranger, such as rape, robbery, or assault.

Warren Moon threw touchdown passes to Brian Fryer, Brian Kelly, and Tom Scott in the 1st quarter and another to Neil Lumsden in the 3rd quarter as the Eskimos beat the Tiger-Cats before 21,625 fans at Ivor Wynne Stadium. Mr. Moon completed 28 of 40 passes for 408 yards. The only Hamilton touchdown came on a 61-yard pass from backup quarterback Dave Marler to Rufus Crawford with 28 seconds remaining in the game. Mr. Scott caught 9 passes for 131 yards, and Mr. Fryer 6 for 115. Edmonton’s Jim Germany rushed 7 times for 84 yards, including a season-best long gain of 39. Edmonton punter Hank Ilesic had been suspended by the Eskimos for walking out on the team because of a contract dispute, and was replaced by veteran Zenon Andrusyshyn, who had been released by the Toronto Argonauts several days earlier. Veteran cornerback Larry Highbaugh was missing from the Eskimos’ lineup because of family tragedies in the United States, and his replacement, rookie Ralph Dixon, made his first CFL interception, returning it 24 yards.

Don Sutton was the winning pitcher as the Milwaukee Brewers whipped the New York Yankees 14-1, helped by a 9-run 8th inning.

Matt Dunigan, who hadn’t played a down at quarterback since August 7, relieved starter Damon Allen to begin the 2nd half, and passed for 2 touchdowns while rushing for another to lead the Eskimos to victory over the Roughriders before 31,862 fans at Commonwealth Stadium. Mr. Allen completed an 8-yard touchdown pass to Marco Cyncar early in the 1st quarter after James Zachery blocked a Saskatchewan punt, but the Eskimos led just 10-6 at halftime. Mr. Dunigan rushed 8 yards for a touchdown just 1:20 into the 3rd quarter, and threw touchdown passes of 38 yards to Brian Kelly later in the 3rd quarter and 10 yards to Rick House in the 4th quarter. Don Narcisse, one of two Saskatchewan receivers playing his first CFL game, scored the Roughriders’ only touchdown on a 9-yard pass from starting quarterback Jeff Bentrim in the 3rd quarter. Mr. Kelly led all receivers with 158 yards on 7 receptions; Ray McDonald, the other Saskatchewan receiver making his CFL debut, led the Roughriders with 70 yards on 3 catches. Mr. Bentrim, who completed just 16 of 37 passes for 208 yards, led all rushers with 65 yards on just 3 carries. Saskatchewan defensive end Lynn Madsen also played his first CFL game, while it was the last game for his linemate Nick Hebeler. The 9-year veteran defensive tackle suffered a shoulder separation and never played again.

4th-year running back Jeff Funtasz rushed 19 times for 119 yards but suffered a career-ending knee injury late in the game as the Golden Bears hung on to defeat the Huskies before 772 fans at Varsity Stadium in Edmonton. Mr. Funtasz, the top rookie player in Canada in 1984, had torn ligaments in his left knee in 1986, and tore ligaments in his right knee on the final Alberta drive in this game. Teammate Mark Brus added 91 yards on the ground. The only Alberta touchdown came early in the 3rd quarter on a 27-yard pass from Darren Brezden to Steve Camp. The Huskies scored their touchdown early in the 4th quarter on a 35-yard pass from Greg Galan to Dan Farthing.

Treamelle Taylor caught 2 touchdown passes and returned a punt 81 yards for another TD as the Rough Riders routed the Tiger-Cats before 17,682 fans at Ivor Wynne Stadium. Jock Climie also caught 2 touchdown passes for Ottawa. Hamilton quarterback Don McPherson threw 3 touchdown passes, 2 to Nick Mazzoli and the other to Lee Knight.

The Lions gave up 25 points as a result of turnovers, but still beat the Argonauts before 34,646 fans at B.C. Place Stadium in Vancouver. Rico Cartwright returned a punt 85 yards for a B.C. touchdown in the 1st quarter, but also fumbled 3 times. Ed Berry returned an interception 62 yards for a Toronto touchdown in the 2nd quarter, and Mark Waterman returned a fumble 11 yards for another Argonaut TD in the 4th quarter. It was the first game as Toronto’s head coach for Dennis Meyer, who had replaced Adam Rita five days earlier when Mr. Rita had been fired.

During a baseball game between the Chicago White Sox and Kansas City Royals at Comiskey Park in Chicago, Kansas City first base coach Tom Gamboa was attacked by two shirtless male fans who left the stands and ran onto the field. William Ligue and his son William, Jr. were charged with assault.

Baseball
Minnesota Twins' outfielder Mike Ryan, playing his first major league game, made 2 hits, drove in 2 runs, and scored 2 runs in his first inning of play. Unfortunately for Mr. Ryan, the game against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park in Detroit was rained out in the 2nd inning, and all records from the game were erased.
