The New York Yankees edged the St. Louis Browns 2-1 at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis to take a 1 1/2-game lead over the Browns in the American League pennant race. Bob Shawkey won the pitchers' duel over Urban Shocker. St. Louis first baseman George Sisler extended his hitting streak to 40 games. In the 9th inning, New York outfielder Whitey Witt was hit in the head by a bottle thrown fro the stands while chasing a fly ball. The incident led to the ban of sales of bottled drinks in ballparks.

Thirteen Women, starring Irene Dunne, Ricardo Cortez, Jill Esmond, and Myrna Loy, opened in theatres. Peg Entwistle, who made her movie acting debut in this film, jumped to her death from the "H" of the Hollywoodland sign in Los Angeles just two days later.

In the Mexican League, Martin Dihigo of Veracruz pitched a no-hitter to lead the home team to a 4-0 win over Nogales. It was the first professional no-hitter ever pitched in Mexico.

Ben Chapman, pitcher and manager for the Richmond Colts of the Class B Piedmont League, punched umpire I.H. Case; the assault resulted in Mr. Chapman's suspension for the remainder of the 1942 season and the entire 1943 season.

The eight-day manhunt for the Boyd Gang ended when Edwin Alonzo Boyd, Leonard Jackson, William Russell Jackson, and Steve Suchan surrendered to Detective Sergeant Maurice Richardson and Detective Bert Trotter in a barn near Yonge Street and Sheppard Avenue in North York, Ontario at 7 P.M. The four had escaped from Toronto's Don Jail on September 7; the story of the manhunt was the first news item to be televised in Canada when Toronto CBC affiliate CBLT began broadcasting on September 8, with Lorne Greene at the anchor desk.

Baseball
Robin Roberts picked up his 25th win of the season as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Cincinnati Reds 9-5.

Joe Gordon, manager of the Sacramento Solons of the Pacific Coast League, inserted himself as a pinch hitter in both games of a doubleheader against the Los Angeles Angels, and hit a home run in each at bat. His first at bat resulted in a grand slam that provided all the Solons' scoring in a 4-1 win.

Menan "Tex" Schriewer scored a touchdown in the 1st quarter and Dick Shatto added another in the 2nd quarter as the Argonauts held on to defeat the Rough Riders before 24,721 fans at CNE Stadium. Ron Stewart scored the only Ottawa touchdown on a 3-yard rush in the 3rd quarter after Toronto's Joe Hernandez attempted to lateral on a punt return, and the ball was recovered by the Rough Riders on the Toronto 3-yard line. A Toronto safety touch provided the only scoring of the 4th quarter. Toronto quarterback Tobin Rote completed 20 of 30 passes, while Ottawa quarterbacks Ron Lancaster and Russ Jackson combined to complete just 4 of 19, and gave up 4 interceptions.

An Israeli force of armour and infantry, supported by warplanes, crossed the southern border at dawn and clashed with Lebanese troops. The Israelis said that the raid, launched on the eve of Yom Kippur, had flushed Palestinian commandos from 16 villages.

Terrorism
Three anti-Tito Croatians, who had hijacked a Swedish airliner to Madrid 20 hours earlier, surrendered peacefully to Spanish officials. Also surrendering were six of the hijackers’ fellow Croatians, who had been released from Sweden’s prisons in exchange for the 83 passengers the hijackers had permitted to deplane at Malmo.

Disasters
At least 100 were killed and more than 200 injured when a wooden bridge in Naga, Philippines crumbled under the weight of a crowd watching a religious procession in the Bicol River.

Sport
The American challenger Dynamite, helmed by Lloyd Ecclestone, won the deciding race over the Canadian sloop Mirage to capture the Canada’s Cup yacht race on Lake Ontario. Gordon Fisher of Toronto was at the helm of Mirage.

Boxing
Former world welterweight and middleweight champion Emile Griffith (75-12) won a 10-round split decision over Joe DeNucci (54-13-4) at Hynes Auditorium in Boston. On the undercard, Juan "Butcher Boy" Botta knocked down Ottawa's Jimmy Nobody 3 times for a technical knockout at 1:46 of the 1st round of a middleweight bout.

Mack Herron and Jim Thorpe scored touchdowns as the Blue Bombers jumped to a 17-0 1st-quarter lead and coasted to victory over the Stampeders before 25,210 fans at Winnipeg Stadium. Jim Lindsey, who played the entire game at quarterback, connected with Gerry Shaw in the 3rd quarter for the only Calgary touchdown. Doug Woodlief, playing his first, and only CFL game, started at middle linebacker for the Stampeders, but left with a broken arm. It was also the only CFL game for Winnipeg defensive back Mel Smith, who had won the 1971 Hec Crighton Trophy as the outstanding university player in Canada as a receiver with the University of Alberta Golden Bears.

Winning pitcher Burt Hooton hit a grand slam off losing pitcher Tom Seaver as the Chicago Cubs routed the New York Mets 18-5 at Wrigley Field in Chicago. The Cubs drew 15 bases on balls, including a National League record 5 straight for catcher Ellie Hendricks. Chicago second baseman Glenn Beckert set a major league record for a single game by stranding 12 baserunners.

Mike Schmidt hit his first major league home run, a 3-run blast off Balor Moore of the Montreal Expos in the 7th inning, giving the Phillies a 3-1 win. Prior to the home run, Mr. Moore had pitched 25 consecutive scoreless innings.

Bill Robinzine, 29
. U.S. basketball player. Mr. Robinzine played forward in the NBA with the Kansas City Kings (1975-80); Cleveland Cavaliers (1980); Dallas Mavericks (1980-81); and Utah Jazz (1981-82). He had been released by the Jazz after the 1981-82 season and was reported to be considering playing in Italy, but he committed suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning in his car in Kansas City.

Israeli troops seized control of most of west Beirut after overcoming small resistance by Lebanese Muslim and leftist militiamen.

Protest
A general strike began in Bolivia. Strikers closed down factories, offices, airports, and other transport facilities, demanding the resignation of Bolivian President Guido Vildoso, who had been in office for just two months.

Christopher Soames, 66
. U.K. politician and diplomat. Mr. Soames, a Conservative and son-in-law of former Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill, represented Bedford in the House of Commons from 1950-1966, holding two cabinet posts in the governments of Prime Ministers Harold Macmillan and Sir Alec Douglas-Home from 1958-1964. He was given a life peerage in 1978, and as Lord Soames, was Leader of the House of Lords from 1979-1981. He died of pancreatitis, 26 days before his 67th birthday.

Kermit Wahl, 64. U.S. baseball player. Mr. Wahl was an infielder with the Cincinnati Reds (1944-1945, 1947); Philadelphia Athletics (1950-1951); and St. Louis Browns (1951), batting .226 with 3 home runs and 50 runs batted in in 231 games. In 8 years in the minor leagues from 1944-1954, he batted .274 with 51 home runs and at least 325 RBIs in 663 games. Mr. Wahl died of cancer.

Environment
Representatives of 24 countries, meeting in Montreal, approved a treaty designed to preserve the ozone layer. The signatories agreed to freeze world production of the most frequently used chlorofluorocarbons regarded as responsible for the destruction of ozone. The Montreal Protocol also provided for a 50% reduction of world output of the chemicals by 1999, while production of another group of compounds, halons, would be frozen in 1992. The treaty would become effective when ratified by 11 countries representing at least 2/3 of all consumption of chlorofluorocarbons.

Politics and government
Philippines Vice-President Salvador Laurel resigned his position as foreign minister, saying that he had fundamental differences with President Corazon Aquino on the country’s Communist insurgency. Mrs. Aquino also replaced her finance minister.

Baseball
Bob Boone of the California Angels played his 1,919th career major league game as a catcher, breaking the record formerly held by Al Lopez. He batted 0 for 4 wit 4 putouts as the Angels defeated the Kansas City Royals 6-4 before 18,739 fans at Royals Stadium. The Royals had the bases loaded with 1 out in the bottom of the 9th inning, but Danny Tartabull struck out and Frank White grounded into a force play to end the game.

Jimmy Key allowed 6 hits in 7 scoreless innings to improve his 1987 record to 17-6 as the Toronto Blue Jays shut out the Baltimore Orioles 7-0 before 29,353 fans at Exhibition Stadium in Toronto. Baltimore catcher Floyd Rayford batted 1 for 3 and made 6 putouts in the 390th and last game of his 7-year major league career.

Stan Stanicek made his major league debut as a pinch hitter for the Milwaukee Brewers, reaching first base on an error by New York third baseman Mike Pagliarulo and coming around to score as the Brewers scored 3 unearned runs in the top of the 7th inning to overcome a 4-2 deficit and defeat the New York Yankees 5-4 before 20,232 fans at Yankee Stadium. Economics and finance
Italy and the United Kingdom withdrew from the European Exchange Rate Mechanism and let its currency float, effectively devaluing the lira and pound, respectively.

Brian Perry of the Canadian Tax Foundation said that taxes were increasing; an OECD report said that Canada's tax revenues were up to 39.4% of Gross National Product in 1991, up from 37.1% in 1990 and 34.5% in 1989, versus the U.S. rate of under 30%.

The Canadian House of Commons passed a bill ending the Family Allowance baby bonus system. It was replaced by more support for the working poor, and an earned income supplement for those working, with the benefit shrinking as income rose.

James Gregory, 90
. U.S. actor. Mr. Gregory was a character actor on stage, screen, and television in a career spanning more than 45 years. He was known for his gravelly voice and playing detectives, and starred as New York Police Detective Barney Ruditsky in the television series The Lawless Years (1959-1961), and Inspector Frank Luger in the comedy series Barney Miller (1975-1982). Mr. Gregory's best-known movie role was probably as the Joe McCarthy-like Senator Johnny Iselin in The Manchurian Candidate (1962).
