Pierre Baillot, 70
. French musician and composer. Mr. Baillot was a violinist who taught at the Conservatoire de Paris, and wrote the instructional manual L'Art du violon (1834). He was known for composing chamber music and works for violin, and died 16 days before his 71st birthday.

Francisco Morazán, 49. President of Central American Federation, 1830-1834, 1835-1839; Head of State of Honduras, 1827-1830; Head of State of El Salvador, 1839-1840; Head of State of Costa Rica, 1842. General Morazán, a native of what is now Honduras and a Liberal, was the most prominent political figure in Central America in the 1820s and '30s, leading the Central American Federation, which was formed of a union of Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and El Salvador, and which dissolved in 1839. He was overthrown as El Salvador's head of state in 1840, and went into exile in South America. General Morazán returned to El Salvador in January 1842 and took power in a bloodless coup in Costa Rica in April. He was overthrown in a coup that began on September 11, and was executed by firing squad in San José, 18 days before his 50th birthday.

The Alouettes took a 7-0 lead in the 1st quarter after a touchdown by George Dixon, but the Stampeders came back with touchdowns by Ed Buchanan and Lovell Coleman. Larry Robinson added 2 converts and a field goal. Approximately 18,000 fans were in attendance at McMahon Stadium.

Baseball
The Pittsburgh Pirates beat the San Francisco Giants 5-1 to end Jack Sanford's 16-game winning streak. Bob Bailey, making his major league debut with the Pirates, hit a 2-run triple.

Sam McDowell made his major league debut with the Cleveland Indians, striking out 7 Minnesota Twins in the first 6 innings. He left with 1 out in the 7th when he broke two ribs because of his hard throwing. The Twins scored 3 runs off reliever Frank Funk in the 9th inning to win 3-2. Lee Stange was credited with his first major league win.

Frank Howard batted 4 for 4 with 2 home runs, and added 2 assists from right field, as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Chicago Cubs 6-4 at Wrigley Field in Chicago.

This began the series' long run on North American television. The pilot was broadcast in Canada two days before it was shown on CBS in the United States. Perceptive viewers will notice that George Morgan plays Father John Patrick Mulcahy (the name "Francis" was added in later episodes). It was Mr. Morgan's only appearance in the role; William Christopher played the role for the remainder of the series, which lasted 11 seasons.

Scandal
A U.S. federal grand jury indicted former Central Intelligence Agency official E. Howard Hunt, former counsel on finances to the Committee for Re-election of the President (CREEP), and the five men who had been arrested at the Watergate office complex in Washington on June 17 on charges of “wilfully, knowingly and unlawfully” breaking in to the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee to steal documents and install electronic listening devices.

Baseball
The San Diego Padres and Cincinnati Reds combined for a major league 28 strikeouts in a major league game as the Padres won 1-0. Cito Gaston's home run in the 4th inning provided the scoring. Winning pitcher Fred Norman struck out 15 as he hurled his 6th shutout of the year. Losing pitcher Don Gullett struck out 11 and reliever Pedro Borbon added the other 2.

Sadegh Ghotbzadeh, 46
. Iranian politician. Mr. Ghotbzadeh was Iran's Minister of Foreign Affairs from November 29, 1979-August 3, 1980, taking office shortly after terrorists had seized the United States embassy in Tehran. He resigned when his diplomatic approach to ending the siege failed. Mr. Ghotbzadeh was executed by firing squad after a 26-day trial on charges of plotting to overthrow and assassinate Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

Israeli troops and tanks pushed into west Beirut in a drive that they claimed was prompted by the previous day’s assassination of Lebanese President-elect Bashir Gemayel. Lebanese Prime Minister Shafik Wazzan appealed to the troops to withdraw.

Abominations
The United States Senate voted to kill a proposal, which had the approval of President Ronald Reagan, that would have banned the use of federal funds for abortions and would have encouraged efforts to reverse the Supreme Court’s 1973 decision to legalize abortion.

The British Columbia Lions traded veteran receiver Al Charuk to the Montreal Concordes for future draft choices. In 8 games in 1982, Mr. Charuk had caught 11 passes for 114 yards and 1 touchdown. He came into the CFL with the Toronto Argonauts in 1975 and joined the Lions in 1977. Mr. Charuk’s best seasons were 1978 (51 receptions for 790 yards and 4 touchdowns) and 1980 (32 receptions, 674 yards, 7 touchdowns). He chose to retire from football rather than report to Montreal.

A peace mission led by United Nations Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar concluded four days of meetings with Iranian and Iraqi leaders with no apparent success in ending the war between the countries.

Diplomacy
During the first of three days of talks in Washington, U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz and Soviet Foreign Minister Eduard Shevardnadze signed an agreement to create “risk-reduction centers” to help avoid an accidental nuclear war. In a move toward the treaty on intermediate-range nuclear forces (INF), the U.S.A. agreed that it would begin removing its missiles from Europe as soon as the treaty became effective.

Mario Lemieux scored on a pass from Wayne Gretzky with 1:26 remaining in regulation time to give Canada a 6-5 win over the U.S.S.R. and the Canada Cup championship at Copps Coliseum in Hamilton. The Soviets took a 3-0 lead 8 minutes into the game, but Rick Tocchet and Brian Propp scored to make it 3-2 before a late goal gave the Soviets a 4-2 lead after the 1st period. Larry Murphy, Brent Sutter, and Dale Hawerchuk scored in the 2nd period to give Canada a 5-4 led, but the Soviets tied it in the 3rd before Mr. lemieux scored the winner.



Baseball
Keith Hernandez made his 2,000th career major league hit as he helped the New York Mets to a 12-4 win over the Chicago Cubs.

The New York Mets traded two minor league players to the California Angels for veteran pitcher John Candelaria.

Auto racing
Sam Hornish, Jr. finished .0096 seconds ahead of Helio Castroneves to win the Chevy 500 at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth to win his second consecutive Indy Racing League championship. The race was the last of the season and Mr. Hornish's win was his fifth of the season.

Rubens Barichello and teammate Michael Schumacher finished first and second, respectively, in the Italian Grand Prix in Monza. It was Mr. Barichello's third win of the season, and the 15th consecutive podium finish for Mr. Schumacher.

Danny McManus completed a 35-yard touchdown pass to Archie Amerson on the first overtime possession to give the Tiger-Cats their win over the Alouettes before 15,061 fans at Ivor Wynne Stadium. Paul Osbaldiston kicked a pair of 47-yard field goals in the 4th quarter to give Hamilton a 28-26 lead, but Montreal kicker Terry Baker missed 2 field goal attempts in the last minute of regulation time, both of which went for singles to send the game into overtime. Mr. McManus threw an 84-yard touchdown pass to Tony Akins in the 2nd quarter, and Jarret Smith rushed 9 yards for a Hamilton touchdown in the 4th quarter. Montreal quarterback Anthony Calvillo threw touchdown passes of 63 yards to Pat Woodcock and 18 yards to Thomas Haskins, and defensive end Anwar Stewart returned an interception 46 yards for the other Alouette touchdown. Mr. McManus completed 21 of 34 passes for 403 yards, while Mr. Calvillo was 27 for 49 for 371 yards. Mr. Akins caught 5 passes for 150 yards, and Mr. Amerson caught 5 for 147.

The Roughriders led 19-1 after the 1st quarter and coasted to victory over the Argonauts before 24,387 fans at Taylor Field in Regina. Nealon Greene passed 72 yards to Derick Armstrong for the first Saskatchewan touchdown and handed off to Sedrick Shaw for a 4-yard touchdown run in the 1st quarter. Mr. Greene rushed 1 yard for a touchdown in the 3rd quarter and handed off to Corey Holmes for a 23-yard touchdown run in the 4th quarter. The Argonauts scored their only touchdown in the 3rd quarter on a 53-yard pass from Jim Ballard to Mookie Mitchell. The Argonauts’ loss was the last game for Gary Etcheverry as the team’s head coach. Mike “Pinball” Clemons, who had coached the team in 2000-2001, resumed the head coaching duties.

Baseball
The Minnesota Twins blanked the Cleveland Indians 5-0 to become the first major league team of 2002 to clinch a playoff spot.

Troy Glaus hit 3 home runs to lead the Anaheim Angels to a 13-4 win over the Texas Rangers.

Curt Schilling recoreded 8 strikeouts, giving him 300 for the season, to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 6-5 win over the Milwaukee Brewers. Mr. Schilling and Randy Johnson became the first teammates to each record at least 300 strikeouts in the same season.

Sammy Sosa hit a 3-run home run to hit the 100-RBI mark for the 8th straight season as the Chicago Cubs blanked the Cincinnati Reds 6-0. Mr. Sosa joined Mel Ott and Willie Mays as the only players to record 8 straight seasons of at least 100 runs batted in.
