Game 2 @ Stockholm
Canada (1-0-1) 4 Sweden (0-1-1) 4
Phil Esposito’s shorthanded goal with 47 seconds remaining in the game at Isstadion Johanneshovs tied the game for Canada. At the time of the goal, Vic Hadfield was serving the final seconds of a 5-minute penalty for cross-checking Swedish defenseman Lars-Erik Sjoberg. In his autobiography Hockey is My Life (1973), Mr. Esposito claimed that the Swedes were the dirtiest team he’d ever played against. They were successful in using their sticks on the Canadian players in such a way as to provoke the visitors into open retaliation. Other Canadian goals were scored by Mr. Hadfield in the 1st period, Don Awrey in the 2nd period, and Rick Martin in the 3rd period. Mr. Martin was credited for a goal that appeared to have been scored by Gilbert Perreault. Lars-Goran Nilsson, Tord Lundstrom, Hans Hansson, and Inge Hammarstrom scored for Sweden. Ed Johnston was in goal for Canada, Curt Larsson for Sweden.

Al Butler returned an interception 35 yards for a touchdown with 1 second remaining in the 3rd quarter and Larry Smith rushed 2 yards for a touchdown just 2:16 later as the Alouettes beat the Lions at Molson Stadium. Backup quarterback Don Bunce produced both B.C. touchdowns on passes of 41 and 37 yards to Jim Young in the 4th quarter.
With the Roughriders leading 14-11, the Eskimos had a chance to tie the game, but Dave Cutler missed a 20-yard field goal attempt with 4 seconds remaining, and the single point allowed the Roughriders to escape with the win before 21,230 fans at Taylor Field in Regina. Incompetent officiating by the crew of referee Abe Kovnats contributed to the Roughriders’ win, as late hits by Saskatchewan defensive end Bill Baker on Edmonton quarterbacks Tom Wilkinson and Dave Syme were seldom penalized. Saskatchewan quarterback Ron Lancaster threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Bobby Thompson in the 2nd quarter and handed off to George Reed for a 2-yard touchdown in the 4th quarter. The Eskimos failed to score a touchdown, with Mr. Cutler kicking 3 field goals and missing 3 others for single points.
