Kijūrō Shidehara
. Prime Minister of Japan, 1930-1931, 1945-1946. Baron Shidehara was a pacifist and career diplomat who was Japan's chief negotiator at the Washington Naval Conference (1921-1922). He was elevated to the kazoku (hereditary peerage) in 1925, and sat in the House of Peers until it was abolished in 1947. Baron Shidehara served as Foreign Minister (1924-1927, 1929, 1931), and was interim Prime Minister from November 1930-March 1931 while Osachi Hamaguchi recovered from an assassination attempt. Baron Shidehara maintained a low profile during World War II, and was appointed Japan's first postwar Prime Minister, serving from October 9, 1945-May 22, 1946, leaving office after his government lost power in the country's first postwar election. After the abolition of the House of Peers under the new constitution, Baron Shidehara was elected to the House of Representatives as a member of the Liberal Party, serving as Speaker of the House from February 11, 1949 until his death on March 10, 1951 at the age of 78.

. U.S. author. Mr. Butler wrote more than 30 books and more than 2,000 short stories and essays. He was best known for the short story Pigs is Pigs (1905).

Charlie Dressen was fired as manager of the Cincinnati Reds after pressing general manager Warren Giles for a contract renewal. Mr. Dressen was replaced for the rest of the season by scout Bobby Wallace, who hadn't managed in the major leagues since 1912.

Frank Filchock threw touchdown passes to Normie Kwong and Jim Chambers in the 4th quarter as the Eskimos came back from a 9-0 deficit to defeat the Blue Bombers before 9,600 fans at Osborne Stadium. Mel Embree scored the lone Winnipeg touchdown in the 2nd quarter.

Dave West scored 2 touchdowns and Harry Hood, Paul Salata, and Johnny Bright each added another as the Stampeders beat the Roughriders in front of 11,500 fans at Taylor Field in Regina. Harry Lampman, Bob Pelling, and Herb Johnson scored Saskatchewan's touchdowns.

Johnny Pont, Ross McKelvie, Slough Bolton, and Fred Smale scored touchdowns for Balmy Beach in their win over the Royals. Bobby Lee and Cy Todd scored touchdowns for Windsor.

Jack McKelvie returned 2 interceptions for touchdowns to lead the Imperials to their shutout of the Redskins. He intercepted an Al Dekdebrun pass and returned it 35 yards for the game's first touchdown in the 2nd quarter, and took a lateral from Mr. McKeever after an interception in the 4th quarter for his second touchdown. The Imperials completed just 2 passes in the game, one of which went from Mr. McKelvie to Mr. Florence for a touchdown in the 3rd quarter.

In the Los Angeles Angels' 5-4 loss to the Kansas City Athletics, 17-year-old Ed Kirkpatrick made his major league debut, pinch hitting in the 9th inning for the Angels.

. Swedish financier and industrialist. Mr. Wallenberg, scion of Sweden's most powerful family, was CEO of Stockholms Enskilda Bank and the investment company AB Investor.

Kristjan Eldjarn, 65. 3rd President of Iceland, 1968-1980. An archaeologist and not affiliated with a political party, Dr. Eldjarn was elected as Iceland's head of state with 65.6% of the vote in 1968, and was re-elected without opposition in 1972 and 1976. He retired from office in 1980 to devote himself to academic work.

War
Israel launched an all-day series of air strikes against Syrian and Lebanese positions in central and eastern Lebanon, and announced that 10 targets had been hit and five Palestinian command posts destroyed.

Politics and government
Deng Xiaoping was elected chairman of a newly-formed Central Advisory Commission to the Communist Party of the People’s Republic of China.

Scandal
Special Federal Prosecutor Leon Silverman announced that he had found no evidence to permit prosecution of U.S. Labor Secretary Raymond Donovan for organized crime connections. It had been alleged that Mr. Donovan had dealt with mob-controlled subcontractors when he was a partner in a New Jersey construction company; that he had set up dummy companies to launder money; that he had given payoffs to an organized crime figure; that he had rigged sewer contracts; and that he had made illegal contributions to Ronald Reagan’s presidential campaign fund. Mr. Silverman said he had been unable to find any corroborative evidence for the allegations.

Crime
The trial of Australian woman Lindy Chamberlain, accused of murdering her nine-week-old daughter Azaria, opened in Darwin. Mrs. Chamberlain's defense was to claim that a dingo had taken the baby. On June 12, 2012, Northern Territory Deputy Coroner Elizabeth Morris ruled in favour of Mrs. Chamberlain.

Business
The U.S. Interstate Commerce Commission authorized the merger of three railroads: Union Pacific, Missouri Pacific, and Western Pacific. The merger effectively created a vast new railroad system linking the Midwest, southwest, and Pacific coast of the United States. The Union Pacific was to acquire the other two lines and would become the third-largest system in the United States, with lines from Chicago to the west coast and south to the Gulf of Mexico.

Disasters
49 people were killed when a jetliner bound for New York crashed in Malaga, Spain.

At least 26 people were killed when the second typhoon in as many days struck Japan.

Steve Carlton pitched a 3-hitter for his 20th win of the season and hit a solo home run as the Philadelphia Phillies blanked the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0.

Steve Garvey had 4 hits, including a game-ending home run in the bottom of the 16th inning, as the Los Angeles Dodgers edged the San Diego Padres 4-3 at Dodger Stadium.

Tom Burgess threw touchdown passes to Jock Climie, Stephen Jones, and James Ellingson, Anthony Drawhorn returned an interception for a TD, and Gary Wilkerson returned a fumble for another touchdown as the Rough Riders beat the Tiger-Cats before 24,364 fans at Lansdowne Park. Hamilton quarterback Damon Allen threw touchdown passes to Wally Zatylny and Earl Winfield. The Rough Riders led 22-0 after the 1st quarter, but the Tiger-Cats reduced the deficit to 22-17 at halftime.

Doug Flutie’s 25-yard touchdown pass to Allen Pitts just 1:16 into the game was all that was needed as the Stampeders recorded their first shutout in 21 years—and the first in the CFL in 4 years—before 29,044 fans at SkyDome. Mr. Flutie also rushed for a touchdown. Blair Kiel, playing his first CFL game, relieved the ineffective Rickey Foggie at quarterback for the Argonauts in the 4th quarter, and on his first play, threw a pass that was intercepted and returned 36 yards for a touchdown by Kenton Leonard. The game was marred by a brawl at the Toronto bench area in the 3rd quarter, resulting in the ejection of Calgary’s Andy McVey and Toronto’s David Williams and Rocket Ismail, who had aimed a kick at Mr. McVey. The game was the last for Adam Rita as head coach of the Argonauts; the next day he became the first head coach to be fired during the season after leading a team to a Grey Cup championship.

Backup quarterback Sammy Garza threw touchdown passes to Larry Thompson and Warren Hudson and handed off to Mr. Hudson for a 38-yard touchdown run as the Blue Bombers broke a 16-16 tie in the 4th quarter before 26,242 fans at Winnipeg Stadium. Darrell Corbin scored the first Winnipeg touchdown when he recovered a blocked punt in the Saskatchewan end zone just 1:25 into the game. Kent Austin threw for 370 yards, but his 61-yard completion to Jeff Fairholm with 38 seconds remaining in the 3rd quarter was the only touchdown he was able to produce. Mr. Garza completed 10 of 15 passes for 144 yards, while starter Matt Dunigan was just 6 for 21 for 52 yards and 2 interceptions.

The Eskimos fumbled 6 times and lost 5—quarterback Ricky Ray fumbled 3 times—as they lost to the Lions before 21,886 fans at B.C. Place Stadium in Vancouver. The first fumble by Mr. Ray, on the Eskimos’ first play from scrimmage, was recovered by B.C. linebacker Carl Kidd at the Edmonton 31-yard line, and Deonce Whitaker rushed 7 yards for a B.C. touchdown just 1:33 into the game. Jason Clermont scored the Lions’ other touchdown on a 36-yard pass from Damon Allen in the 3rd quarter. Mr. Ray connected with Ed Hervey for a 32-yard touchdown early in the 2nd quarter and John Avery, who rushed 18 times for 181 yards, went 61 yards for a touchdown later in the quarter. The Eskimos led 15-13 at halftime, but scored just 3 points in the 2nd half. Edmonton’s Terry Vaughn led all receivers with 10 catches for 149 yards.
