Levi Strauss, 73. German-born U.S. clothing magnate. Mr. Strauss, born Löb Strauß in Bavaria, moved with his family to New York City at the age of 18. He founded Levi Strauss & Co. in San Francisco in 1847. The company, originally a dry goods business, became the first company to manufacture blue jeans. Mr. Strauss left an estate of about $125 million (more than $3 billion today).

The New York Giants swept a doubleheader from the Boston Braves 8-3 and 4-0 to clinch the National League pennant. Christy Mathewson picked up his 23rd win of the season in the first game, and Al Demaree pitched a 7-hitter and struck out 9 in his first major league start to win the second game.
The Cincinnati Reds, trailing the Chicago Cubs 9-0 going into the top of the 9th inning at West Side Park in Chicago, rallied for 10 runs to take a 10-9 lead, but lost 11-10 when they gave up 2 runs in the bottom of the inning when Reds' pitcher Ralph Works walked a Chicago batter and hit another, and relief pitcher Rube Benton walked 3 straight batters to force in the tying and winning runs.

The Giants were leading 5-2 in the 8th inning of the second game when youngsters, who had been admitted free, invaded the field. Umpire Ziggy Sears forfeited the game to the Braves. Boston pitcher Warren Spahn was credited with a complete game, but not the 9-0 win.

Paul Henderson scored with 2:06 remaining in the game to give Canada the win; it was the second straight game in which Mr. Henderson had scored the winning goal. The game was tied 2-2 after the 1st period; Canada's Phil Esposito scored the first and last goals of the period, sandwiched around Soviet goals by Aleksandr Yakushev and Vladimir Petrov. After a scoreless 2nd period, Rod Gilbert scored at 2:13 of the 3rd period to give Canada a 3-2 lead. Mr. Yakushev scored again to tie the game at 5:15. With 3:34 remaining in the game, Canadian defenseman Gary Bergman and Soviet captain Boris Mikhailov were penalized 5 minutes each for roughing for a fight that developed when Mr. Bergman took exception to being kicked by Mr. Mikhailov. On a Canadian television documentary about the series 20 years later, Mr. Mikhailov publicly apologized for his action.

Gerry Organ's 22-yard field goal with 4 seconds remaining in the game gave the Rough Riders the win over the Lions before 22,108 fans at Empire Stadium in Vancouver. The winning kick was set up by Rod Woodward's interception of a Don Moorhead pass at the B.C. 45-yard line. Mr. Organ had tied the game 17-17 with a 30-yard field goal with exactly 2 minutes remaining. Tom Pullen scored an Ottawa touchdown in the 1st quarter and Terry Wellesley scored the Rough Riders' other TD in the 3rd quarter. Jim Evenson and Jim Young scored B.C. touchdowns in the 2nd quarter. Former Lion Paul Brothers started at quarterback for Ottawa but was replaced by Rick Cassata for the 2nd half.

Roy Dewalt rushed for 2 touchdowns and passed to Merv Fernandez and Harry Holt for a touchdown each to lead the Lions over the Argonauts before an Exhibition Stadium crowd of 40,250. Larry Key added to the B.C. attack with 18 carries for 109 yards and 2 touchdowns. Toronto quarterback Condredge Holloway completed touchdown passes to Terry Greer and Dave Newman. The game was televised in the United States on NBC as a way of filling in time while the National Football League players were on strike.
The Eskimos led the Stampeders 6-1 with under a minute remaining in the 1st half, but erupted for 30 straight points in the next 17½ minutes to defeat the Stampeders before a record Commonwealth Stadium crowd of 59,836. Warren Moon threw touchdown passes to Tom Scott and Brian Kelly, Jim Germany rushed 10 yards for a touchdown, and defensive tackle Dan Kearns returned an interception 39 yards for his first CFL touchdown. Backup quarterback Phil Kessel produced both Calgary touchdowns on passes to Alton Alexis in the 4th quarter. Mr. Scott led all receivers with 171 yards on 8 receptions. Edmonton punter Zenon Andrusyshyn, playing his second game with the team while regular punter Hank Ilesic was sitting out over a financial dispute, punted for a single in the last minute of the 1st half. It was his only point as an Eskimo; Mr. Ilesic returned for the next game, and Mr. Andrusyshyn, who was in his 10th CFL season, was released. This game was also televised on NBC, with Dick Enberg calling the play-by-play and Merlin Olsen providing colour commentary.
