Football
CFL
British Columbia (3-4) 37 @ Toronto (0-5) 21

Willie Fleming scored 2 touchdowns, Nub Beamer and Tom Larscheid added 1 each, and Gary Schreider scored a touchdown, 3 converts, and a field goal as the Lions beat the Argonauts before 22,254 fans at CNE Stadium. Mr. Schreider's touchdown was a result of his knowledge of the rule book: He attempted a field goal and the ball hit the upright and came down outside the goal line. Knowing that it was still a live ball, Mr. Schreider hustled downfield and picked it up for a touchdown (the rule was changed in 1971). Dick Shatto scored 2 touchdowns for the Argonauts, and Joe Hernandez scored the other Toronto TD. After the game, Mr. Schreider told the Lions that he would not accompany the team back to Vancouver, but would enter Osgoode Hall law school in Toronto. In order for him to continue his football career and study at the same time, the Lions traded him to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats a few weeks later for veteran halfback Ron Howell.

Baseball
The Boston Red Sox defeated the New York Yankees 9-3 in 16 innings at Yankee Stadium. Lu Clinton of the Red Sox had a home run, triple, and single, and made 4 big catshes in the outfield. Dick Radatz pitched 9 innings of relief for Boston before being lifted in the 16th inning for a pinch hitter, and was credited with the win.
