Television broadcasting in Toronto was scheduled to officially began when CBLT, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation station, was to go on the air on channel 9 at 7 P.M., beginning with a picture of the Indian head logo which was to become the CBC's trademark. However, broadcasting began suddenly in the afternoon, with anchorman Lorne Greene describing the manhunt for the Boyd Gang. The night's programming featured a number of local variety acts, including pianist Glenn Gould, who was 17 days short of his 20th birthday.

Crime
Bank robber Edwin Alonzo Boyd and three members of his gang escaped from death row of Toronto's Don Jail, with a manhunt ensuing and a reward of $26,000 offered for their capture dead or alive.

Literature
Ernest Hemingway's novel The Old Man and the Sea was published.

Jack Jacobs' punt single from the Calgary 28-yard line with less than 5 minutes remaining in the game gave the Blue Bombers their win over the Stampeders before a capacity crowd of 12,000 at Mewata Stadium. The Stampeders took a 6-0 lead on a single by Keith Spaith and a touchdown by Stan Kaluznick (Bob Shaw's convert attempt was blocked). The Blue Bombers tied the game in the 2nd quarter when Tommy Ford returned a punt 65 yards for a touchdown, converted by Bud Korchak.

Bobby Flippin scored 2 touchdowns in the 4th quarter to lead the Eskimos to a come-from-behind win over the Roughriders before 11,907 fans at Clarke Stadium. Mr. Flippin's first touchdown came on a 59-yard pass from Frank Filchock. Edmonton's Don Lord soon intercepted a Glenn Dobbs pass and returned it 35 yards to the Saskatchewan 5-yard line, and Mr. Flippin carried for the touchdown on the next play. Claude Arnold started at quarterback for the Eskimos and completed a 36-yard touchdown pass to Joe Aguirre in the 2nd quarter. Mr. Dobbs completed a 42-yard touchdown pass to Holland Aplin in the 2nd quarter, then found Mr. Aplin for a 10-yard touchdown in the 3rd quarter. Among the spectators was Canadian Prime Minister Louis St. Laurent, who performed a ceremonial kickoff before the game.

NFL
Wayne Millner resigned as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, citing health problems. He had joined the team a year earlier as an assistant to Bo McMillin, but had taken over as head coach when Mr. McMillin had been diagnosed with stomach cancer after just 2 regular season games. The Eagles posted a record of just 2 wins and 8 losses under Mr. Millner during the rest of the 1951 season. Jim Trimble, who had also joined the Eagles as an assistant coach under Mr. McMillin in 1951, was named to succeed Mr. Millner, who accepted a position as an assistant coach with the Washington Redskins just 17 days later.

Eagle Day completed a 75-yard touchdown pass to Ed Buchanan with 1:14 remaining in the game to give the Stampeders their win over the Eskimos before 17,000 fans at Clarke Stadium. The winning touchdown came on the first play after the Eskimos had taken a 12-10 lead on Tommy-Joe Coffey's 11-yard field goal. Mr. Day had completed a 17-yard touchdown pass to Jim Dillard in the 2nd quarter, while the Eskimos hadn't found the Calgary end zone until an 8-yard pass from Don Getty to Jim Letcavits at 7:22 of the 4th quarter. Mr. Letcavits had an opportunity for an earlier touchdown, but he fumbled before reaching the goal line, and was credited with a single point when the ball was recovered in the Stampeder end zone. Calgary fullback Earl Lunsford rushed 15 times for 84 yards, while Edmonton's Johnny Bright rushed 16 times for 82.

Boris Mikhailov scored 2 goals to lead the Soviets to victory over Team Canada before 15,570 disgruntled fans at Pacific Coliseum. Yuri Blinov, Vladimir Vikulov, and Vladimir Shadrin also scored for the U.S.S.R. Gilbert Perreault, Bill Goldsworthy, and Dennis Hull scored for Canada. The Vancouver fans booed the Canadian team's performance, prompting Phil Esposito, in an emotioal televised post-game interview, to claim that the team badly wanted to win and was doing all it could. This blogger once met a man who claimed to have been in Vancouver that day, and this man said that the booing was prompted by reports that Canadian players had been out on the town the night before the game, not returning to their hotel until 3 A.M. or so, and that these stories were never reported outside Vancouver for some reason.

Ferguson Jenkins of the Chicago Cubs reached the 20-win mark for the sixth consecutive season as the Cubs edged the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3.

Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah, 76. Kashmiri political leader. Sheikh Abdullah was the leader of the National Conference--Kashmir's largest political party--and was Chief Minister of Kashmir from 1974 until his death.

Religion
Three denominations, the Lutheran Church in America, American Lutheran Church, and Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches, voted to merge to form a new church, which would become the third-largest Protestant denomination in the United States. The merger, which created the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, didn't come into effect until January 1, 1988.

The Chicago Cubs fired manager Gene Michael and replaced him with Frank Lucchesi. The Cubs were sixth and last in the National League East Division with a record of 68-68.

Quentin Burdick, 84. U.S. politician. A member of the Democratic party, Mr. Burdick represented North Dakota in the United States House of Representatives (1959-1960) and Senate (1960-1992).

Danny Tartabull batted 5 for 5 with 2 home runs, a double, and 9 runs batted in as the New York Yankees routed the Baltimore Orioles 16-4.

John Rollins won the Canadian Open at Markham, Ontario when he birdied on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff with Neal Lancaster and Justin Leonard. Mr. Lancaster would have won the tournament in the regulation 72 holes with just a bogey on the final hole, but he double bogeyed, dropping him into a tie with Messrs. Rollins and Leonard.

The Montreal defense stopped Troy Davis at the Alouette 1-yard line on a 2-point convert attempt with 40 seconds remaining as the Alouettes held off a late rally by the Tiger-Cats before a sellout crowd of 20,002 at Molson Stadium. 2 touchdowns by Lawrence Phillips and another by Thomas Haskins had helped Montreal to a 31-10 lead in the 3rd quarter, but Hamilton rallied to make it close. With the score 32-16, Danny McManus completed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Tony Miles and a 2-yard 2-point convert pass to Andrew Grigg to reduce the deficit to 32-24 with 2:32 remaining. Scott Coe blocked Terry Baker’s punt, and Jarret Smith returned it 40 yards for a touchdown to set up the final 2-point convert attempt.

Charles Roberts rushed for 3 touchdowns and caught a pass from Khari Jones for another as the Blue Bombers beat the Lions before 27,298 fans at Canad Inns Stadium. Marvin Coleman scored the other Winnipeg touchdown on a 60-yard interception return with 38 seconds remaining in the game. Deonce Whitaker, Geroy Simon, and Sean Millington scored B.C. touchdowns. Mr. Roberts finished with 20 carries for 111 yards and 4 pass receptions for 44.

Baseball
in a 6-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, the Texas Rangers set an American League record by hitting a home run in 26 straight games. Rafael Palmeiro's homer in the 6th inning kept the streak going.
